Because Gary knew Miranda, better than anyone else. It was a silly game Miranda and Stevie always played whenever there was a man in uniform. Miranda always loved Gary and he knew it.

Looking deeper. Why is she allowed to fawn over hunky guys everywhere? Even the night after with Gary. But when she tells Gary no because he does not immediately say l love you, and he gets a girl friend or hires a girl he knows to work at the restaurant who is nothing but nice to her she gets all jealous and finds it acceptable to throw food at them or make inane comments? Don't get me wrong l absolutely loved the series and have watched it many times but she has some big double standards.
