Ok, who else got goosebumps when she started singing? Everyone? If you didn't have a reaction, you might want to check your pulse! I don't have words that haven't already been used a million times to describe the majesty of her voice, or the beauty of her smile and spirit. I was 6 or 7 the first time I heard her, it was Ed Sullivan's show, she sang "Pata Pata", and I've loved her ever since. I'm so grateful that many more people are discovering her now because of the internet. Thank you, Mother Africa, the cradle of humankind. Now as humans, we need to learn to BE kind! Love is the answer, it always is. Hate never solved a problem, just creates new ones.
I had the absolute honour of hearing her sing LIVE twice when she visited my small Caribbean islands of Trinidad & Tobago as her husband was Trinidadian.

It feels like she's performing for herself and everyone else just gets to listen. Like she's explaining what she's going to sing, but it's an afterthought. I love her style.
Why do you need to diminish the talent and authenticity of modern artists? This is a wonderful piece of art. But nowadays there are many aspiring artists practicing their craft with passion and creativity. They might not be on the radio, but they definitely exist. Just because old music is great does not mean new music cannot be great as well.
They are both great songs, get over yourself. Any artists worth their salt would not rest on laurels and tally what songs were stolen but would appreciate that the creative process is indeed a spark and constant progression. I guarantee you Solomon Linda would be smiling at the Tokens version.

The Tokens version The Lion Sleeps Tonight is very similar to what hip hop has done throughout the years with beats that sample music from other artists work but instead of a "beat sample" The Tokens just used there own vocals, and added the English lyrics on top. If the Tokens never make that hit song then so many people would never have been lucky enough to hear Solomon Linda Mbube and would probably never hear this version either. That being said Soloman Linda should have been credited and compensated for the Tokens version since its original release. But unfortunately the Record Industry at the time didn't agree, and they were wrong for that.

I would love to have a full translation of Miriam's version! IsiZulu is such a beautiful, powerful, _colorful_ language. Many Zulu-speaking people are literally some of the best singers I've ever met! Being able to read exactly what she sings in this rendition would be amazing.

What you call Jazz is an African style of music, Sir. Miriam Makeba sang these traditional songs, taught to her by her grandmother and then her mother from childhood. She perfectly articulated them to fit the "Jazz" mold when she was in the West.

Thanks to my parents, I heard of Miriam Makeda in the mid 1960s. I remember it was a big sensation when she burst onto the music scene. Some of my moms friends, started dressing like her. Lovely performer, great voice. I think most of her albums are out of print, she had released a great album, around 1969 or 70, one of my friends brother had it, some real kool songs and great work. Would love to find it. (Peace).

No one is seeing and can explain the aesthetics of this song. I see a young African worrier hunting and killing lion. A deadly traditional activity that symbolises heroism and growth in Africa. Miriam is excellent imitating the hunting through voice and body movement. That's why you may not understand what she sings but you feel the beauty of the song.
