I identify a lot with this song. I personally have been a mirrorball, many times. And I still seek for people to love me, but it's not what happens. The more you try, the more you just think of someone else's needs instead of your own, but well, I'm working on that and finally loving myself as the Taylor Swift fan and Disney Channel lover of pink stuff. I also like to think that the bridge is what she felt when covid starts. “When they send home the horses and the rodeo clauns” like when we couldnt go anywhere we had to stay home but shes still on that tightrope shes still trying to entertain us and so we dont forget she hanging in there. I love your lyrical breakdowns! Theyre so helpful! I have take on the part about mirrors if you dont mind me sharing:) I feel like when youre a mirror to somebody else, you essentially change your personality to fit in or make other people like you. Like if your a naturally positive person but you want people to like you, you change yourself to be less happy or optimistic just to fit in. Since your personality is changed to fit the other person its kinda like youre reflecting the other person. I think this also goes with the fact that a mirrorball doesnt move its just stagnant, but it spins around. I feel like the spinning around can be the fact that they are changing for others but even while spinning around, it gets them no where. They stay stagnant in the same space. You know? Taylor mentioned the close parallel of “this is my trying” with this song and the pandemic, I think both factors should be taken into account for the analysis. “The end is near”, when analyzed side by side with this is me trying means the literal end of life. Also, I think the mirrorball part directly correlates with the “shattered edges”, the more pieces of glass a mirrorball, the prettier it reflects light; she’s a mirrorball because she’s so broken. The “party” ends, everyone goes on, she breaks when no one is noticing it, and it happens over and over again. Round and round like the mirrorball in a party, or like a carrousel in a circus setting.

yesss i love this song, and i love your analysis ❤ i feel like the protagonist is somewhat of a people pleaser, and i think you're right in the sense that she's aware of her situation but she's stuck on doing this performance because she feels like she has no other choice. if your mirrorball doesn't work anymore, you're gonna discard it and replace it right? i think that's her biggest fear in this entire song. when she said "when no one is around, my dear, you'll find me on my tallest tiptoes, spinning in my highest heels", i take it as the protagonist's entire life is about performing, and that's such a normalcy to her that she still puts on a show even when nobody's around to watch. high heels generally are shoes for occasions. when you have high heels on, your feet are not relaxed. and that's how i perceive the protagonist's psyche. she feels like she can't have a moment's peace, because the masquerade revelers are always "watching her shattered edges".
i love what you mentioned about the fate of a broken mirrorball! you're right, if she doesn't "work", she'll be replaced! omg, love what you said about how the high heels could be representative of her psyche. imo you're spot on! it's so sad, it seems like she's never at ease

I love this!! Definitely gonna check out your other videos. To me personally, mirrorball is about school (even tho not all the lyrics apply). "I‘ve never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try" really puts into words how it feels to be second best yet never THE best. To be more passionate than smart. To have potential but no great talent. I struggled a lot with feeling "pathetic" in its truest sense and coming across as a try-hard. I wished for things to come to me naturally. I wanted to be cool and unbothered. So even though the song is originally about love, this is what it means to me. :)

I like to think this song is about augustine cuz she knew james was never hers but she always hoped james would whole heartdly love him like she is and she is so in love with him that all she cares about is his love, his attention (not negatively). Also this a teen story so I like to think she really is affectionate about james but this is raw and fresh love thing also the time u usually become or might become reckless I want u to know I am not that good in literature so feel free to correct me or add ur thoughts to it

Thank you for this! I always interpret mirrorball as someone who is a people pleaser. Like the rest is sleeping, the rest is going home and she's still there.. thinking, practicing on how to look pleasing in the eyes of people. Somehow that's the only thing that makes her contented and that's sad coz she can be herself but she's afraid that when she falls, ppl won't be please anymore. This is a great reaction! Also when you mention being "stagnant" it made me think of Taylor's song "right where you left me" that song is also sad AF
