The initial idea for Intrusions was inspired by brain functioning, as with my other recent pieces, especially my cycle Brains for string quartet. In this new work, each instrument is both a brain as well as a neuron constituting a "large brain", embodied by the orchestra.
Studies show that the brain develops almost spontaneously by absorbing information from the outside. It learns through repetition and imitation of this external information. During this learning process a form of social awareness, close to compassion, arises to understand the difference between self and other. The brain then tries to narrow this gap through a game of predictions and achievements.
The piece develops this analogy accordingly, particularly in regard to the relationship with "others". In a more global way, it poses the question of a person's connection with their environment and society. Additionally, electronically generated sounds of different living beings are brought into tension with the instruments of the orchestra and with other sounds of daily life. The learning mechanisms take place in both directions: from the orchestra to the electronics and from the electronics to the orchestra. These various imitation processes become an entity that approximates a constantly evolving sound ecosystem.
