I just wanted to say thank you for doing these reviews and for your very professional style. It's more professional than the majority of "professional" reviewers on the internet, and your ability to not waste any time getting the point never ceases to impress me. Keep up the fantastic work.
@@OnettBoyXD For free content sure I agree but its definitely one of the better reviewers and I'm a huge fan its just not as skit heavy as others tend to be but I like Snes drunk because his videos are so relaxing and are really great ways to learn about old games you probably haven't before also I really like his editing and just the way he does his videos is in a way I really appreciate.
This channel is such a valuable resource - not only for finding out about games you haven't heard of, but also for giving context and interest to games you kiiiiinda knew about, but were never going to seek out on your own. I've discovered and rediscovered so many favourites on here, and man oh man - Mischief Makers is definitely one of them!
I liked the n64 controller. I never understood the hate. Sure, what we have now is more intuitive to games we play, but the n64 controller, at the time it was relevant, was great and intuitive to the games of that system
@@agonleed3841 Yeah, I never had a problem with it as a kid either. The only time I thought it felt weird was when I first played Turok and had to aim with the control stick, but I got used to it really fast.
@@Clovershroom yes but publishers own the rights to the games made by developers, if u want mischief makers to be re-released someday (as do I, very much so) Square Enix is who will nake that decision
I remember vividly enjoying and loving this game growing up as a little kid. I remember getting it for Christmas back in 1997, I don’t remember asking for the game so it was a surprise to me when I received it and it ended up among my favorite games for N64 along with Super Mario 64, Star Fox, and Yoshi Story. Those were the days.
I agree and I think I randomly got this game as a present and was at first disappointed as I didn't know what the heck it was but it ended up as one of my favorite N64 titles and I played through it more times than most games I owned 💖
I just posted a similar comment on nitro rads newest video about this game. My mom was so good at getting gifts for Christmas, I had no idea what kind of game it was and I loved it. She never gave me a bad gift. Still doesn’t
One of my all-time favourite soundtracks. I was fine with this back in N64. I have trouble finding a comfortable set-up on modern controllers. Need like a 6 button Sega pad for easy C button access or something.
You can play it on emulators but I personally don't recommend this game it's way more boring than it seems I know it looks fun and interesting at first glance but it's not a fun game
I rented this game from Blockbuster, and was captivated! It's definitely rough around the edges, but very endearing, and I had a great time playing it. Glad to see you give this game some exposure!
I think snes feels better, more comfortable. The d pad especially, a bit stiff on n64 for my taste. Also the L and R buttons just a better to tap on snes. Not thats its terrible, you can play with it fine but the snes controller is just superior.
This is one of the best games I've ever played! The shaking mechanic was really nice and it lead to much experimentation. Also, this game has some of the best bossfights ever created.
Isn't there like a Voltron type boss at the end. Like all the robots you beat during the game combine to form something bigger. It's been 20 years+ since I beat it. 😅
@@sega_kid4288 Yeah, there are these 3 "main bosses", each with their own machine. And near the end, they combine their mechs into one single larger mech. ^^ But I prefer the fights against these single mechs, cause I have a weakspot for "constantly moving bossfights". There is also this... monolith(?) who attacks you with bad words and you have to shake these into good words and attack the monolith with them.
One of the best games you ever played?!?!? I got this for Christmas when I was 13, beat it over the break, and never even thought about it again until this video. It is a very average side-scrolled that is almost entirely forgettable.
@@mattjennings6706 Good for you. I've rented a N64 from a friend with Mario, Banjo, this game and a few others. And yeah, I was kinda blown away by it, simply cause of the unique mechanic and the overall design. Also, nearly every level was kinda unique with it's own gimmics and mechanics. "Average side scroller" my left testicle...
I love the gameplay in Treasure games. Often complex for their respective genres, but oh so worth it to master. Bangai-o and Alien Soldier really had my head spinning.
Old video. BUT. God I remember getting this game used for Christmas one year. My parents, I swear, always knew how to pick out the underrated gems in the gaming world despite not knowing jack about games. When I got it it had a file that was already 100% complete so I always loved just dicking around in whatever level my 8-year old self thought looked interesting. Good times.
@@fidelsolis6070 Rare to see someone else acknowledge them when I post a comment regarding them. My opinion remains true years later, though. Even discovered some new tracks that I started to freshly enjoy recently.
We have very different opinions about the N64 controller and early 3D graphics (I've been in love with this console since when I bought it, in summer 2018), but thanks for this video, as awesome as usual. This is one of the next games I want to try
@@supremevictory4310 oh yeah saturn was better in 2d gaming than ps1 especially with 4mb ram cart unfortunately alot of great 2d Saturn games never left japan
This was one of my all time favorite games on the N64, it was such a quirky game that made me wanna replay it again and again, especially the big boss fights Awesome game pick and review
You don't need to "play it any way you can" to use a different controller. Raphnet makes a gamecube to n64 controller adapter and even a SNES to n64 controller adapter, which, looking at the controls, is actually usable for this game. There's also the new Brawler controller. I don't really understand the hate the N64 controller gets though. I think it's a perfectly fine controller for the games that were on the system.
I have a cheap $10 USB N64 controller, works great for emulators. As for people hating on the N64 controller I always ask a simple question and get the same response 9/10 times: how are you holding it? They almost always say they held the left grip by the D Pad and tried to reach their thumb over to the analog stick. HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW TO GRAB THE CENTER GRIP!? It baffles me every single time... at least this game used the D Pad so it was not an issue.
My issue is not with the center grip. I mean come on, it should be obvious to any idiot to hold it that way. My issue is with the flimsy-beyond-flimsy joystick, and the C-buttons that kinda-sorta not-really serve as a 2nd joystick. Also the sheer size of the N64 controller has always been extremely off-putting to me.
I love that controller for most games as I'm not a huge fan of the original controller. Funny thing is, the Tribute is actually not very good for Mischief Makers as you use the D-pad and it's reeeeal close to your action buttons. But for pretty much anything else it's awesome.
Thank you for talking about this. Growing up this was the very first N64 game that I owned. There aren't a lot of RU-vidrs talking about this game and I am happy that you made this
Nice, you finally covered this game! I'll add, if you want an extra challenge: Go for the S ranks The ranks are based on time, and generally, the S ranks are amazingly brutal to get. Like for example, in the missle surf stage, at some point you gotta ditch and missile while making sure it's as straight as possible, and then finish the level without it, as quickly as possible before it collides with anything to get the S rank
This game looks amazing. Thanks for shedding light on it! I also share your hate of the N64, but have you considered doing a video on F-Zero X? My favorite racing game, the only reason I want a N64.
I loved this as a kid. I started playing it because it was on display at my mall. I loved it so much that I bought it and completed it. I tried playing recently and couldn't quite get into so I think I'll leave it as a good memory. Seeing some of this footage of the later levels is tempting me though. Damn this bringing back good memories.
i played this game on an n64 emulator like 13 something years ago, this game had some really creative and fun mechanics to play with and the boss fights were fantastic. For a developer coincidentally named treasure, they certainly made the best treasures.
Remember my friend had this game when I was a kid, one of those games I'm glad I tried at a friend's house rather than shelling out hard earned allowance money to rent. "Shake Shake" became a running gag we had for a bit whenever encountering an obstacle like a locked door, smaller sibling or bag of chips that wouldn't open. 😅
thanks for reviewing this drunk! this has been on my list for awhile. it was tough getting every game I wanted as a kid, since typically I'd get one game for my birthday and two or three games for christmas. whatever games you got, you were stuck with, unless you borrowed games from a friend or rented. I'm having a blast going back to older games that I never got to experience as a kid/teenager. Suikoden is my current game at the moment. great game if you grew up playing and enjoying those 2d traditional JRPGs.
That part with the rocket where you have to steer it and adjust it's course by moving back and forth on it actually is unexpected brilliantly clever! Haven't seen anything like that in any plattformer ever!
As an N64 fan, this is one of those N64 games that I always implore people to try (anyway they see fit, although if you don't like the N64 controller, there are alternatives).
I owned this game and LOVED it. One of the most unique games ever and the boss fights were intense and amazing. And collecting everything got you a nice bonus ending. I remember when you do the competitive events and playing dodge ball against the kitty 🐈 and disqualifying but boosting past the line and picking it up and shaking it, which would make you feel bad when it would start crying.
I remember skipping this game every time I went to rental stores, because of the "scary" cover, and only after playing it any way I could I realized my mistake. This is a good game overall (not as good as the general internet people say it is, thought), but my highlights of the game are the boss fights. Each fight gets more and more creative with Marina's grab, culminating in a fight against freaking Megazord! One of my favorite final boss ever! Great video as always. And I hope you have a great rest of your day, too! PS: Am I the only person who likes the N64 controller? Aside from the flimsy stick, it is the most confortable controller I ever used, and it still good to hold today (unlike the progressively smaller controllers Nintendo dished out later. Curse you, Joy-Cons!).
I remember going to blockbuster and renting this every weekend trying to beat it as a kid. There was one level I could never get past. Years later I only had a vague memory of "shake shake" game. Good lord this is alot of nostalgia to wake up to! Thanks SnesBud!
Definitely a great game. Very unique in all aspects and fun to see what kind of weird stuff they will throw at you next while you SHAKESHAKE all the time.
@@benjamin_burke You can, but it means that you have to substantiate your criticism because the N64 had a huge influence on development of a design language for 3D games
Wowowoooow! I can't believe you reviewed this! This was one of the first games I got for the n64 when it came out, along with Mario 64. I completely forgot this game existed... Such a strange game haha, but I do know my young self completed it in its entirety. Nostalgia :)
This game holds something of a magical spot in memories of my youth. I have yet to get it working in an emulator, but I haven't tried much. I loved this game, but I remember it being SUPER difficult. I beat Super Mario 64 100% without help, but this game... damn. I hope I can beat it as an adult.
Early 3D is actually my favourite graphic style, but only if some parts of the game are 2D. Games like Symphony of the Night and Suikoden II just look so elegant, while games like Final Fantasy VIII and Resident Evil are impressive. The N64 didn't quite achieve this as good as the PS1, but this game looks nice so I might have to give it a try sometime.
I agree. Final Fantasy VIII was certainly impressive for it's time. And yes..even to this day, CastleVania: SotN is still my favourite 2D videogame from. I was also addicted to Suikoden II.
I love these videos but the super polite ending always gets me. If I had one bit of feedback it would be to integrate the sign off with a summary or conclusion about the game. Great work either way though :)
As always, you make a great case for obscure action-platformers with creative mechanics. I've been sitting on this game for ages despite being a huge Treasure nut-maybe it's time to finally give it a proper go. Knowing it gets better later is definitely great info.
I had a video rental place by my house when I was a kid, they got Japanese n64 games there so you could play games way before the American release... They had mystical ninja, star fox an this game (Yuke Yuke Troublemakers). I liked the game so much that I told them I lost the game and paid $50 to "replace" it. This is an incredible game, honestly one of my favorite games ever. I love that there's an old school 2d platform for n64! Definitely a "Treasure" 😎
Mischief Makers is so damn good and the three Beastector bosses blew my goddamn mind with their animations during their fights. And then you fight The Beastector at the very end where they combine like a goddamn Megazord and it's an awesome fight. The story is straight shenanigans though. The ending being literally fed by gold gems and simply stopping once you run out is a neat idea, and it even fakes you out multiple times so you have to get EVERY gold gem to get the actual proper ending. game is amazing though. shake shake!
I never understood the hate for the N64 controller. It looks weird, sure, but it's works really well. It's so easy to grip in the middle, since it has this gun-like shape. You just generally ignore the D-pad and L button in most games. And in the games that do use the D-pad, it's nice to have it in an easy to use position, since you hold the controller differently. It's not placed in a compromised position. And neither is the analog stick. And it's so nice having an analog stick that doesn't have to tilt so far, and which has notches to help you hold the stick straight. That makes the GameCube controller better. I also would argue that the N64 has the best 3D platformers, though that's mostly because the 3D platformer started losing prominence around that time period. Sure, it also has some bad 3D platformers, since it was still experimental. But many are good. And the graphics look a lot better on a CRT, or using emulation where you can upscale them. Once you do that, it looks fine.
I really enjoyed the hell out of this game. It was one I'd never heard of, but grandma got it for my brother. Took awhile to get used to it, but it was fun. Going for the gold I mentioned in another comment was a good challenge. Get no hit on bosses or get through that maze were the hardest ones. Really obscure gem in my opinion
"you can put two flowers in there, and out comes a ninja star, so that's cool" I rented it from a block buster once and I loved the game, but never got it again. It's a shame too, because I've always thought fondly of it
For anyone interested in this game, the controls are actually REALLY easy to understand. All dash moves are on the C-pad, your main interaction with the world is the B button. A button makes you jump, or dash if you face down-forward. I legit don't understand why the controls are such a mystery to this guy.
I really enjoyed this game. The grab and shake game was really well done. I especially loved the special effects, especially when some of the bosses machines "transform" into the next battle phase, similar to a Transformer. Getting all the gold gems was a challenge too, especially the ones where you had to beat certain bosses without getting hit once to win the gem. But what was even harder was trying to get an S rank in every stage, where you have to beat stages extremely fast, which is perfect for speed runners. My main issue with the game was, most of the levels were a bit too short for me. But there's plenty of them. This game is a great hidden gem and was probably over looked because it was 2D, even though it did a lot that wasn't possible on 16 bit systems at the time.
This game is an absolute gem that I rented only once when I was a kid and didn't quite grasp how good it was, but wish I had more time to play it now as an adult.
I feel like this is actually a hidden gem. Okay, lots of people know about this game and everbody knows its quite good. But not enough people appreciate it enough for all the gameplay elements imo. I remember it getting not higher than 7/10 ratings back in the day
Today just before you released your video I was thinking of trying Mischief Maker for the first time. Perfect timing! Made me want to play it even more. Great video as usual ;) PS: I agree with you, the N64 controller is less than ideal.
Man I loved playing this when it came out I think it was 1999. Probably the best platformer I played on n64 but there was few platformers to begin with which was disappointing. But iirc it was quiet short and easy. But goddamn watching this has really brought back the memories man thanks for this video.
