One noteworthy misconception many people make, is that Finland is part of Scandinavia, which it isn't. We are part of the Nordic countries and Fennoscandia, but not Scandinavia
@NordicWiseguy
@NordicWiseguy 2 года назад
This is true, sort of. However Scandinavia is part of Fennoscandia and Finnish Lapland belongs in Scandinavian peninsula so if someone calls us Scandinavians it doesn't really bother me that much. It is close enough.

Well reason for that is that in English-speaking countries people tend to use term Scandinavia when they are actually referring to Nordic countries. Term Nordic countries is not that commonly used in everyday conversations.

As a soon to be teacher in Sweden, I can confirm that everyone holds up Finland as a masterpiece of educational prowess. Nice video! Here in Sweden I've heard arguments from irritating woke-ists that they parise Finland for having no homework as some sort of excuse to not study. And the fact that you bring up the other misconceptions like "Finns are shy introverts" and "vegetarians" bc of the school food - "Therefore we should do the same". I get the feeling that these misconceptions often come from politically motivated idividuals who like to point to other countries as some sort of reason to radically change things in their own country. Like when Americans point to Sweden and say "Look they are successful socialists therfore socialism is good" even though our market is pretty damn capitalist and the only reason we can have some sort of thing similar to the fantasy of socialsim.

3:02 Many of these things that used to work very well have been systematically destroyed as the years have gone by. The education system is a prime example of this, I have never nor will I ever understand the obsessive need to implement drastic changes to something that clearly works. If things keep on going the way they are, we can kiss goodbye to the well faring developed Finland that we still know today. Another symptom of our falling little utopia is national debt, we have fallen from the level of other Nordic countries to the level of the Baltics and very soon to be surpassed by Estonia. Good times indeed.

I don't agree with Finnish people are shy and don't do small talk. In my experience Finns talk A LOT and most of the time small talk. Just go in a bus and listen, you will never see two Finns (that are traveling together of course) in silence. The thing comes with foreigners, Finns are shy/more quiet with foreigners only. But with their Finnish friends they can talk all the time. I mean, i come from an Italian family and I never got this tired of listening people talking than I do here with my wife's friends 🤣
@Silveirias
@Silveirias 2 года назад
I don't think it's shyness even with foreigners. It's just part of our culture to not "bother" strangers, so you wouldn't just start talking to a stranger unless you actually needed to. People from other cultures have very different conversation cultures, so Finns not used to that might find it difficult to speak with a foreigner. For example, personal questions are generally seen as rude and invasive (unless you know the person well), so foreigners often make Finns uncomfortable and unwilling to continue the conversation without meaning to. This includes innocent questions like "what is your job", "are you married", "where do you live, "do you have children" etc. Finns will generally wait for the other person to bring up their personal life first before it is acceptable to ask personal questions. On the other hand, meaningless chit-chat is often seen as pointless, dishonest, and annoying, and when done, it carries a feeling that you're purposefully keeping your distance from the other person. It feels like you don't want to get to know the person you are speaking with. For example, if you ask a Finn "how are you", they expect that you actually want to know, and if you are asked that and just say "good" and leave it at that, the Finn will think you don't like them and don't want to speak with them.

I think Finns and the rest of us people in the Nordic nations are the same, we don't drink too much alcohol on average, but we do drink a lot of alcohol when we party, mostly because we couldn't have a party without alcohol, it would be too awkward without it. Everyone would just sit there in silence, thinking, I could have done anything else than this at the moment, oh look everyone I found some vodka, now we can finally enjoy this party. I personally drink about every day, not much, but enough. A beer or 2 per day, roughly. Another very common misconception is that Finland has high suicide rates, there's even the joke that Finland is the happiest country because all the sad people kill themselves, but this is just blatantly false. The stereotype has its roots in reality though. In the 90's during the big depression in Finland suicide rates skyrocketed and were some of the highest in the world for a moment, but suicide prevention programs were put in place and the rates have been steadily decreasing ever since. Nowadays the suicide rate in Finland is still a bit on the higher end for European countries but not by a wide margin and below the USA for example. Recently there have been promises made by politicians to improve mental health services and make therapy more available for the youth so we'll see how things will develop in the future.

I think the praises of the Finnish education system are pretty deceptive, especially since in my opinion our education system is extremely poor during this Covid Pandemic, especially for university studies. And then there's thedevious fact that a fair bunch of workplaces in Finland won't employ you if you have only a Bachelor's Degree compared to a Master's Degree or Doctorate. That and I think a certain quotation describes the work of Finnish teachers: "Paljon paskaduunia pienellä palkalla", or something like that.

Corruption exists everywhere.... that's obvious... but in relative terms Finland is very uncorrupt....

It is suspected that Finland will pay silent money to maintain the "least corruption" status. But I don't know if it's true or just a rumor because I haven’t found any research on it. But if that were true it would be paradoxical.

the definition of corruption probably means something like how common is it to give cash to someone to get what you want. here it is called 'suhteet' (relations), what makes things go your way., also the knowledge of 'what strings to pull', as we say, will take you further than what average people can get. There is also cartels in Finland. Idk if this falls under 'corruption', but... it is really about how one defines 'corruption'.

I've been wondering how they measure the alcohol consumption. The amount of alcohol finnish people bring in from estonia is huge and there aren't any records of it anywhere
@jarskil8862

It is count on statistics. About 1/5th of Finnish alcohol is "non documented" No idea how its calculated, but higher statistic maths is more complicated than my engineering maths
@AVKnecht

That "false" statistic is also the reason why Germany and Czechia always rank so high. Because of tourists that come to the country for a few days, get totally drunk and then leave.

One notable stereotypical image of Finns is that all Finns are crazy about Hevi Metall, don't talk at all and drink a lot of vodka, when in reality most Finns listen to commercial pop, drink a liter of coffee per a day, and we like to talk eternal conversations ("vatuloida", "vatvoa", "velloa") instead of short small talk. Hevi culture is one of the subcultures of Finnish music, but it has a huge visibility in how Finland is marketed and branded in other countries. But I have no any idea that where the idea that Finns always drink a lot of vodka has come from and why we still want to stick to that image.

We do get good meals for cheap in public university (Thankfully mine is the cheapest and I get to mock other universities for that) but it's often white rice, beans, a piece of meat and some salad, none of that elaborate stuff you see in the pic.
