Miserere Mei Deus

This piece is Psalm 51, but first set to music by Allegri around 1630. It is one of the finest and most popular examples of renaissance polyphony.
It is often heard in Churches of the apostolic Christian tradition on Ash Wednesday, immediately following Shrove (pancake) Tuesday, marking Christ's return to Jerusalem.
Beautifully performed here by The Sixteen, listen out for the simplicity, humility and reverence.

He didn't actually do it with helium, it's a joke. If we assume helium made you be able to hit high notes better, nobody would still be able to control the long note like that. The helium wears off and would be impossible to keep it at the same note. It would be decreasing in pitch actually. But helium does not actually increase your vocal range whatsoever. He's completely capable of hitting that note without it, they even had some sort of documentary where they spoke about how hard it was to increase the vocal range that far high. And they perform live and he now always hits that note with no problems.

As a Muslim, this brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel sad and excited at the same time. Unfortunatley, muslims have been facing a medieval dark age for years and miss every artistic beauty on this world. We will overcome this I hope...We believe in the same thing, except for our different perceptions of Jesus. To us, Jesus is one of the prophets sent by the same and mere God, Allah. We love him so much, just like we love other prophets. I hope all the people with sincere love of god goes to heaven, regardless of how they name their belief or culture.

Knowing full well you are a sinner and feeling the weight of your sin. Its about coming to God the father and asking for forgiveness. Unfortunately, this art isn't meant to be heard by everyone. Only the ones who have accepted the true beauty of music (and, if you're a believer, the speech of God Himself in this melodies) can hear this the way it was meant to be heard. Not like the modern, passionless rubbish that we call "music". This magnificent composition needs to be enjoyed, with passion and delight. Only when society wills to accept the art, this masterpieces will be the "top charts". But, despite the joy that this brings to the life of the listeners, that isn't going to happen. Not now, not in a close future. At least the awake can sense what this is, and will become part of the light to the humanity that this is.

Popular legend has it that Pope Urban VIII held this piece in such high regard that the 1514 piece of music was never to leave St. Peter's, upon excommunication, except for three copies that were given to different ecumenical safekeeping. Upon hearing it once, 14 year old W.A. Mozart transcribed it, from memory, and, instead of excommunicating him, Pope Clement XIV awarded him with the Order of the Golden Spur. the cat was out of the bag, and the piece was published in 1771 for everyone to enjoy! Miserere (full title: Miserere mei, Deus, Latin for "Have mercy on me, O God") is a setting of Psalm 51 (50) by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri. It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for use in the Sistine Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday of Holy Week.

This type of choral music is part of Catholic heritage and has its roots in the Gregorian Chant renditions of the various Old Testament psalms which monks and nuns have chanted throughout the centuries, for the glory of God. I suspect few non-Catholics would have shown any interest in this type of music in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially as The Age of Enlightenment was unfolding (and some would have actively condemned it). I am glad that more and more non-Catholics are beginning to appreciate this type of music, not just for the singing, but for the actual meaning of the words.

Hmm, I agree, no one can touch that top C. I have to sing the 1st treble/soprano line in the quartet for my school choir. The trick is to completely relax and to let a slight bit of breathiness (not normally recommended) which then dissipates as a result of the aligned vocal folds. The note comes clear and true, not in a screech or yell. Great acoustics in the building....

We need more of this in the Catholic Church today. We’ve spiraled so far into secularism this type of music seems foreign and exotic. They perform it so beautifully.

I agree. That is why I switched to the Anglo-Catholic wing of the Anglican Communion. They are Catholic, use most of the Roman literature, including my own RSV Bible. And they have priests who are much more believable. Visit an Anglo-Catholic, and compare the speed that the Lord's Prayer, and the Hail Mary, are said. The Romans race through as if they have left the dinner on the table, and the Anglos treat it as important PRAYER. And, they use Latin, sing as well as the Choir at Westminster Cathedral. I don't regret leaving the church of my Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and where all my family had their weddings and funerals. I love being at a Eucharist that is being con-celebrated with the congregation, and having so much power and honesty, and FAITH.

Lyrics: Miserere mei, Deus Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me. Asperges me hysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me.

King David had stolen another's wife, had the husband murdered, then corrupted his government to cover it up. He'd gotten away with it but bringing the whole ugliness out in this song also brought out the beauty of forgiveness. To hear that beauty entering the frame of sadness and remorse, brings a richness to the music.

FYI copied from wiki: the fourteen-year-old Mozart was visiting Rome, when he first heard the piece during the Wednesday service. Later that day, he wrote it down entirely from memory, returning to the Chapel that Friday to make minor corrections. Some time during his travels, he met the British historian Dr Charles Burney, who obtained the piece from him and took it to London, where it was published in 1771. Once the piece was published, the ban was lifted; Mozart was summoned to Rome by Pope Clement XIV, only instead of excommunicating the boy, the Pope showered praises on him for his feat of musical genius. The work was also transcribed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1831 and Franz Liszt, and various other 18th and 19th century sources survive. Since the lifting of the ban, Allegri's Miserere has become one of the most popular a cappella choral works now performed.[citation needed]

Please don’t confuse Mozart’s Miserere with Allegri’s Miserere. They are substantially different, although Mozart may have been influenced by Allegri. One of the many Mozart myths, like the one about him being buried in a pauper’s grave. There have been many renditions of Psalm 51(50), on which this motet is based. But, if it is on Wikipedia, then it must be true!

I'm an atheist but I love Catholic culture, and most family values. This style of music and the artistry associated to it will never be lost because of the church, so congrats! I love that the church invested so much in artists. I would like to recommend that people read about Miserere on Wikipedia and how Mozart as a child stole this song from the church as a boy and had to answer to the Pope himself! Its an excellent read.

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard; and I love all forms. Before God, I am a sinner. But He has saved a great sinner like me by His Holy Blood on the Cross. It has been carved in my heart and mind. Thanks to that Grace, As I lose my way toward the Heaven, My heart teaches me lessen all the time. The Lesson is that JX is the way, the Truth, and the Life. The Truth sets me free.
