Did you like this new format better? Let us know!
@downunderveggiegardendiaries
Volume of the movie is too low compared to your voices which are uncomfortably loud, compared to that movie volume. I do realise that this movie is a soft volume one though. But something for you guys to check as I’m either getting a headache from you guys or having to turn the volume up and down several levels between you guys talking and the movie dialogue.

This was Kathy Bates’ Oscar role….. she’s SO GOOD in this There’s a story she told that on set, one of the producers passed by her, tapped her in the shoulder and said “get your Oscar dress ready”, because they all knew she’d in the least get nominated, maybe win. And she did. In fact, during her speech, she said, smiling: “I want to apologize publicly for the ankles” 😂😂 and everyone laughed and clapped…… she’s an icon

As terrifying as Annie was in the movie, she was worse in the book. For instance, the scene where she said she needed to not be around him for awhile lasted for days. She just left him there without food or water. He had to go to release his bowels and pee on himself and was so dehydrated that he sucked the urine from the sheets. Also as crazy as the ankle breaking scene was in the movie, in the book she cut off one of his feet with a rusty axe and then cauterized it with a blow torch so he wouldn't bleed out!!!

Didnt she also allow him to go days without pain meds and would let him go through agonizing withdrawls? I heard the original ending king had for misery was that annie killed paul and used his skin to bind her misery book and fed the remains to her pig, but king thought that was going too far.

This movie is one of those movies that did not disappoint those who read the book. It held its own. And Kathy Bates' performance, I mean, C'mon! If you've never read the book, you should definitely take the time to read it. It's one of those book you cannot put it down once you get going, I read it in one sitting. And you really feel the main character's "misery". You thought Annie Wilkes was crazy in the movie, phew, that wasn't the half of it. The book really depicts how whacko she was.

This is the first reaction of yours that I've seen and I do have a couple of comments. Before I started watching, I figured you guys were just going to horse-laugh and talk all the way through the movie. I was wrong! Your reactions were funny and perfect for the moment, but you didn't waste a lot of time trying to guess what comes next instead of just watching the movie. You didn't talk for the sake of talking. Kudos on that. You also didn't try to squeeze this into a 30-minute reaction. You left in enough of the actual movie that made this very watchable. Overall, great job! I have subscribed and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your reactions. I will probably have some movies to recommend that I think you guys will love and I hope you can work in some reactions on some of them. I'm your number one fan, guys... LOL! Just messing with you. Great review. I like the new format where the screen is big and your disembodied heads are floating above it. That came out sarcastic, but seriously, it's much easier to see what's going on in the movie. I found it much easier to follow along with the movie because it was less choppy than some past shows. Also, I like it better when it's just the two of you doing the reactions. No disrespect to your guests, but too many people talking at the same time is confusing and distracting. Kathy Bates won her first Oscar for Misery and you can see why. She's amazing. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next movie reaction. Hey fellas! Great reaction on this awesome movie! This is one of the best suspense movies you will watch. You made a comment about the typewriter during the reaction and I wanted to echo webdrude's comment below and add a little more "old-school" knowledge. The Royal typewriter used was a piano key style typewriter and the only way to make corrections, typically, was to backspace and strikeout the error with a capital X and then retype. Autocorrect keys came later with the electonic typewriters. Wite-out was also used to cover the mistake and then re-type over the wite-out. Fortunately, in movies with either computer or typewriters, no character ever makes a typo. It is truly amazing! LOL.
@ericjette2435
@ericjette2435 Год назад
Also, corrasable paper was a type of coated typing paper that allowed you to erase typing mistakes. The problem with that was that the ink smudged, so it wasn't suitable for legal documents, manuscripts, etc. From Wikipedia: "In a 1992 Comics Buyer's Guide column in which he [writer Peter David] provided aspiring writers with tips on composing submissions, he stated, 'Don't write on anything other than standard-weight white bond paper. I don't care what Abe Lincoln or Jack Kerouac wrote on; you're not Lincoln or Kerouac. And for crying out loud, don't use erasable bond. That wasn't a dodge the writer used in Misery to get Annie out of the house; no real writer types on erasable bond.' "

I think that your expectation of more stor elements is because you grew up in the streaming era. Movies and other forms of media have the luxury of being extra long now. If a film was in the cinema at that time, it had to be tight and focused on the main story. Most movies over ninety to one hundred minutes would be sent back by the studio to cut more.

Performances and writing are legendary agreed. The cinematography however is deceptively good in this movie. The moments when the room goes from a sterile looking bedroom to a prison are shown so well with the shadows of the bars on the walls. And the way they make what is essentially a small cramped room seem huge and impossible to traverse in his condition by shooting it from low angles and using tight close-ups on his face. Great camerawork made the performances even better.

A few tidbits for you guys: Kathy Bates won the Oscar for this film. So, your praise of her performance was spot on, Cam! Also, this book/film is *slightly* autobiographical from Stephen King in the following way. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Stephen King used to travel to Colorado and stay in a cabin up in the mountains so he could finish his novels without the distractions of home/family whenever he was having trouble finishing them. Then, when he finished, he would drive back to his home in Maine. Because of that, he came up with the ideas for a lot of his best novels during these drives from Colorado to Maine. This is why, for example, Colorado and Nebraska are such important places in The Stand because he thought it up while he was driving in those states. Also, think about Children of the Corn, which he came up with during the 12 hours it takes to drive through the endless cornfields of Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. Misery is also one he thought up during one of those drives back to Maine. If you want a deeper explanation of this, check out King’s book called “On Writing”. He talks about these drives and which novels he thought up during the drives in great detail. In the book, when Annie “hobbles” Paul, she actually chops his foot off with an axe and cauterizes is with a blow torch rather than hitting him with the sledge hammer. And, the scariest thing I’ve ever read in any book is a chapter where she locks Paul up in the basement overnight after killing the Sheriff and he hears the sounds of rats scurrying around in the pitch dark and imagines that it’s the dead corpse of the Sheriff crawling towards him. Paul feels guilty and blames himself for the Sheriff’s death since the Sheriff is killed by Annie while he’s searching for Paul. Finally, also in the book the, “N” is broken on the typewriter and, while he’s writing the book Annie forces him to write, the “E” and the “L” break as well. It adds so much tension to the nightmare of Paul’s experience even though it’s not part of his physical torture the Annie inflicts upon him. I think it also reveals some of what King himself would find miserable seeing as he used to write on typewriters and these three letters are among the most common used in English! PS - I love your channel. I found it a month or so ago and you guys are quickly becoming my favorite reactors on RU-vid. Looking forward to the rest of GoT. Keep it up and I’m subscribing to your patreon and just followed Cam’s twitch. You might say, I’m your number one fan…. ;))))

Good stuff here but the story you heard about the inspiration is wrong. Stephen King lived in Colorado for a short time with his wife and that is why he goes back there in several stories. What inspired this story was the fans' reaction to his previous novel, Eyes of the Dragon. His more hard-core fans were angry that it wasn't another horror novel and were enraged. Also, Stephen King himself had said that Annie Wilkes directly represents cocaine and the story is a metaphor for his struggle trying to quit. He states that he stopped using alcohol and cocaine in 1986 and the novel was published in 87. So it just occurred to me that this whole comment makes me sound like an Annie Wilkes-type fan but I promise I'm not THAT crazy. My friend and I run a Stephen King book club and this was the last book we did and being that it's my favorite of his book, I dug deep and did a LOT of research and it's all still fresh on my mind.

@@terrelgeer7298, thanks so much for the information. Much appreciated. :) My comments is not based on “ what I heard”, though. It’s based on what I read in his book “On Writing”, which is both an instructional and autobiographical book. I read it about 20 years ago though and may be misremembering some of the more granular details. I’ve only read about 15 of his books and wouldn’t call myself a hardcore fan. So, I appreciate your response and additional information. 👍🏽

Any time!! I wrote a really long comment just a minute ago that has a LOT of information about the movie that you might find interesting. Also, you'd probably appreciate that one of King's earliest typewriters was missing the letter "n" and that's where he got the idea.

Also, you were partially correct. He conceived a lot of his stuff while driving back then and yes, some of Misery did come together while he was on the road.

If you two haven't seen it yet, another Kathy Bates movie that shows how good she is, is "Deloris Claiborne". I highly recommend it. She won an Oscar for her portrayal in Misery.

You think some of their idiotic asides are comical? They make me despair for mankind with how stupid they are and completely unaware/disinterested in anything outside of their own existence. Actually thinking Richard Farnsworth paid for his character name to come up on the credits alongside his name..?!!!! Aside from the fake, over the top jumps for the camera - most obvious and cringe-inducing being when Annie comes in Paul's room after reading Misery has died in the latest book. Bloke on the left is so blatantly acting for the camera it's painful.

Wite out (aka liquid paper) was used to correct mistakes while typing on a typewriter. You apply it to the paper, wait for it to dry, then type over it. They didn’t have the tape kind of wite out back then, it was like paint basically.
@nataliebrunson1157
@nataliebrunson1157 Год назад
And then you line up perfectly with the rest of the words to retype over the mistake. If you weren't careful, sometimes the fixed letter might be too high or too low based on the words around it. Not always easy to do.
@erickyoung8331
@erickyoung8331 Год назад
Or you if you had to fit in two letters, you hold down the space and type to half-space between letters and cram them both in the single space. What a pain!
@AbsoluteApril

you normally use white correction ribbon for typewriters (it's a ribbon sitting by the print ribbon) and just type the same letter and it prints white to get rid of it, but like natalie mentioned it was tough to get lined up perfectly; liquid white out was more for hand writing in ink, not type writers since it takes the time to dry

@@AbsoluteAprilMy family used to use white out for hand and type writing bc that's what we could afford

I played around for a while with my aunt's typewriter and didn't use whiteout to correct. I would just go back and cross out the letter or word. It's definitely a look, but I'm guessing for a draft it would be enough.

So, the way Richard Farnsworth is billed is a common practice. It is done when you've cast a top tier actor in a supporting role that doesn't justify first billing. So they are placed last, often with their character's name. Richard Farnsworth had been nominated twice for Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Bit of trivia - he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound 10 years after this film was released after being partially paralyzed after developing terminal cancer. It's interesting they didn't do the same for Lauren Bacall (Paul's editor), who was famously married to Humphrey Bogart until his death and then married the actor Jason Robards - she was also an Academy Award nominee. Probably because her role was even smaller than Farnsworth's. And if you made a mistake typing, you had to use whiteout (or correcting tape) to cover over the mistake and retype over it (which sometimes required reorienting the paper on the carriage. To make copies, you had to use carbon paper in between the sheets of paper - so if you made a mistake you had to correct each copy separately.

I love this movie! I'm not a huge fan of slasher movies, but Stephen King is a master at true horror. I cosplayed Annie Wilkes 6 years ago at a horror convention. So many horror icons being cosplayed, but mine stood out and gave more people chills than all of the Freddies and Jasons combined! I even had a Dawn of the Dead actor avoiding me most of the con, all he could think about was his ankles. It was great fun walking around and asking "Do you know where Paul Sheldon is? I heard he was going to be here, I'm his biggest fan!" 😈
