I’ve been with misfits for a few years and love them. They started out shipping only surprise boxes which was fun, but I’m glad they’ve grown to more of an online grocery store.
I agree with the packaging of Imperfect foods. I also found they just threw everything in a box and let FedEx make a mess of it. Their customer service was great and I always got a refund for damaged items. I quit when they started charging postage on all orders. We live in an agricultural area, so produce is plentiful and relatively inexpensive here. Wasn’t a savings for us and there were mostly items we don’t use other than the produce. I like the concept. I’ve tried produce boxes locally, but just get a lot of the same vegetables and not much variety. And it was expensive. We used to belong to a gleaning coop and that was wonderful. You did work like picking up food, cleaning refrigerators and sorting food in exchange for whatever you could use. If there were limits, they were posted and the coop members were good about respecting that. One time we got a pickup truck load of salmon to share. Another time an orchard would call and ask us to pick the remaining tree fruit. There isn’t one here that I know of.
I also live in rural Minnesota and I tried Misfits Market and loved them. When I have extra money I order from them because I get to try new products and produce that isn't in season here for cheaper prices. Love their packaging. They have a great selection of groceries.
I've used both misfits and imperfect. Unfortunately I had issues with shipping delays with misfits and in turn my produce was arriving almost unusable so I gave up on them. I had quit Imperfect for exactly the issues you mentioned. But after the issues with misfits I decided to go back to Imperfect. They have definitely improved both in quality and in packaging so I think you are right on about why they have a more limited delivery area now. Fortunately I am still within their delivery zone. I also like that Imperfect with take back their cold packs and boxes and recycle them for you.
Just started Thrive, have been loving HR, but loved your info on misfits market, we are empty nesters and both work full time, mama is sick of grocery shopping and cooking for hours so I am always looking for simplicity Home chef was okay, more prep w hello fresh and too many repeats, thank u
Thanks for sharing this information, Jen. Very helpful. I truly appreciate you and your input. Can you do a video like this Butcher box, Good chop, and etc?!
This was very informative, however for those of us on a limited budget I find I spend more buying from these type places than from a grocery store. I've resigned myself to using whstvI can find for ingredients. Rural Iowa just doesn't have a big variety or the unusual items.
This was timely because it reminded me to update my Misfits cart before it ships so thank you! It's the first one I've tried so I'm cool not trying the others now.
I tried Imperfect Foods at the start of the pandemic and wasn't too impressed. 99% of the produce looked exactly like what I buy at the stores and farmers market. I also wasn't saving any money buy using the services. And not everything was available all the time.
Thank you Jen for doing this video. I’ve heard you talk about imperfect foods before and I looked them up and they didn’t deliver in my area either I have been using misfit markets for about a year now and I really do like them. They have a very large variety and they continue to meet the demands by loosening up some of the restrictions even since I’ve started using them. Love your content keep it up. Thank you for doing this
Great video! I have received Misfits Market 3 times now and have been extremely happy every time. I'm glad you did this comparison, now I know I'll just stick with them and not try a different one.
Thanks for sharing. I have used Misfits Market the most recently and have been impressed with their service and quality, packaging, etc. I've used Imperfect foods before as well and wasn't greatly impressed. Towards the end of using them, less of the produce was usable so I decided to discontinue. I've never used Hungry Root. I have taken a break from my subscriptions for now as I would like to personally pick my produce since it is off season
I live in a very urban area and I actually like Imperfect Foods the best. Mostly because they take the packaging back and reuse it. I don't have to figure out what to do with all the packaging afterward. I also like that they don't have an order minimum. If I just need some produce for the week, I can order just that. There definitely was a time when even my groceries got banged up too and I agree, I think they made some changes. Also Misfits & Imperfect merged probably to be the best of both worlds now. My favorite thing about Misfits is that they don't automatically send you stuff. If you forget to make an order, they just don't send you anything. So, if I need a little extra I get it but if I don't need anything, it's not on me to cancel. I am about to try Hungryroot but I am very skeptical. I hate the credit system, the lack of customization when it comes to the "recipes". We'll see, but that might be a one time trial for me.
I used Imperfect Foods until they stopped delivering in my area (which kinda ticked me off!). Now I alternate Misfits and Hungry Root and am pleased with both.
Jen, the deliveries look great. Unfortunately, I live in a rural town in Upstate NY (about 1800 people) and Misfits Market and Imperfect Foods won’t deliver in my area. I’ve never checked Hungry Root. Hopefully, someday they will expand, as the closest market is 20 miles away. Misfits Market sent me an email saying that if they ever came to my area, they would contact me 😀
Thanks for sharing. I was using Imperfect Foods for about a year and shortly after I moved, they stopped delivering to my area. (You’re right about their packaging..fruits and veggies everywhere lol) I tried Misfits Market once. I started looking at Hungry Root, but wasn’t quite sure how it worked. This video was very helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing this comparison video! Been trying to figure out which one of the grocery/produce delivery services to get because going to the store is just the worst for me! Also I Just found your channel and really like how you review things!
We love Hungry Root, since we have food allergies (lactose & gluten) in our house. They let you setup a food profile, so items that you can’t have or just don’t like are not clogging up your feed as choices. Their dairy free sauces are so flavorful and convenient on busy week nights. That’s why we purchase specific items from Hungry Root that are worth the price. We live in a major metro area, and I still find specialty items that I couldn’t find in our local stores. 😀
While his concept is noble, I had to end my account with both Misfits and his newly acquired Imperfect Foods. Why? Imperfect and now Misfits through their warehouse has a VERY POOR track record in packing goods safely and properly. Why use insulated bags if the packers are TOO LAZY to seal them? Makes for food safety of perishable items questionable.
I had the same experience with poor packaging from Imperfect Foods. My box looked like someone threw the food in there and taped up the box. There was no packaging to protect it through the shipping process.
Imperfect foods would send me spoiled food. I highly don't recommend. I would call them to complain and they said the food is only granted fresh for 4 days. Wich is strange because they sell you a week worths of food. That's 7 days. How does that make sense? I ordered several times but they always, like you said, had horrible packaging and or food was spoiled. I had strawberries that had mold. Cucumbers and zucchini that where soft. Multiple times.
I cancelled imperfect...not many 'deals' and too many imperfections in fresh foods. also I like to go shop for my foods...seeing em before i buy. imperfect had good customer service, delivery n follow up if needed....it was prices that got to me.
Imperfect foods is now part of misfits market which is cool. I’ve been using imperfect foods for 3 weeks now and so far so good. There was a couple things I had to contact them about but they are super helpful and refunded me right away!
Misfits WAS good and since the merger with Imperfect Foods is terrible at packaging, delivery and service. You pay extra for cold pack unless you meet the minimum and yet, the last 3 deliveries arrived as mashed, nasty ice pack gel and product soup and ruined food.
Farmers are not throwing food out or not harvesting it. The food that isn't pretty will be sold and used for multitudes of purposes. If not for fresh purposes, then it will be used in packaged foods, sold for ingredients for bigger companies, incorporated into animal feed and more. In fact, having worked at a grocery store, even the old food that can't be sold there doesn't go to waste. It is sent to farmers for feed. These companies are pretty deceitful to use that lie of a guilt card. It is possible that they are buying from farmers the "ugly" produce. But it would otherwise would be sold for something else, it isn't ever wasted.
I tried Imperfect Foods many times and finally gave up on them. If I remember correctly, I only had one order that didn't have damaged or missing items. I agree that packaging was horrible. They were good about crediting my account for damaged and missing items. My last credit just disappeared out of my account for a second time. I finally just called it a loss and quit them.
im trying to try out hungryroot for the first time but it is wanting me to pay for a box before knowing what is inside... is that how it works? id rather not pay before knowing what they are sending.
I have one question I’ve been looking for a heathy way to eat better but money is always going you know lol but I have a big family and I’m just wondering how much you would spend a month for these boxes
I’ve thought of ordering from Imperfect b4 but I didn’t. At first they didn’t deliver in our area (I am also in the back woods but I’m in NJ). I saw that a neighbor got boxes from them so I know they deliver here. I do not like that their packaging stinks. I am probably going to try Misfit. I also am going to sub to Thrive Market because I am so sick of trying to find things that I can’t get locally that they have on their service.
Why is "comparable to Walmart on Organic apples" a " good deal." If they are misfits that grocery stores could deliver, shouldn't they be much cheaper? Also, my last Musfits Market - it's funny you mentioned, I got smoothed and mildy blueberries I did like the items they carry that I can't find elsewhere, but that's not why I tried Misfits Market.
I use Misfits and Imperfect. I prefer Misfits. They have a lower price point compared to Imperfect. I only pay $5.50 for Misfits shipping. Also, the minimum, at least for me, is $30 period. If I order a cold pack it is a $30 minimum, then I've met my minimum. I will say I had several problems with Misfits late summer / early fall. It was either damaged box, missing items, damaged items, and underweight items (I ordered 12 oz bag of broccoli cut up and the bag weighed 7 oz). Their customer service was always great but I had to pause them for a while. That's when I joined Imperfect. I think Imperfect is switching to delivering the boxes themselves versus Fed Ex. My order is delivered by an Imperfect Foods delivery van. I've never had any problems with Imperfect, I just find them more expensive so I don't order from them often. My husband really enjoys the pork chops from Imperfect. He likes Misfits too, but it tends to have more fat on it that he has to cut off before cooking.
I played with the idea of having groceries delivered, hence watching a series of review videos. I have come to the conclusion that none are worth all the extra packaging. That is just inmcreasding the carbon footprint. I will just stick to grocery stores and farmers markets when available.
It's hard to get fresh produce from delivery in the Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. So cold, the stuff would freeze before you get down to pick it up in some places. I'm half a mile from my mailbox and delivery trucks tear up my road. I have a drop off right inside my property so they can leave items there.
A plastic wrapped potato, I'm sorry but wtaf?! Who thought that was a good idea 🤯 maybe you could give them feedback to say that need to reduce their plastic packaging.
Lol, hours at the grocery store? Ever since Covid I don't wanna leave my house and have looked into delivery services instead. Thank you for your video.
I tried imperfect foods back in 2020. My first box arrived with moldy and clearly spoiled tomatoes. By the time I received the fist box, it was too late to cancel the second. The second box arrived with more moldy and spoiled food. Over half of boxes went straight to the trash.
I will have to try one of the other two sometime, but I didn’t have consistently good experiences with Imperfect Foods, some stuff was good but lots of spilled food and missing items, though I will say their customer service was always professional and helpful. I also didn’t like that they have no way to select which day or time would work best for you to receive a delivery. I don’t like the idea of food sitting out on our front porch while we are away. I’m wondering how do the others schedule their deliveries? I’ll have to check into that. Thanks for doing this comparison, and the helpful information, Jen. 🙂
What about hungry harvest? I have used them in the past but I"m curious how it compares to Misfit markets. I have not used misfit markets but was helpful. I have wanted to swtich.....
@@Jen-Chapin so just got my 1st box of misfit markets. The selection is way better then hungry harvest. The packaging could be better, one of my yogurts was already opened. It was all in one huge box which made me not able to lift or move the box. I do love the selection way more for sure.
I tried imperfect foods and they were amazing! Loved the unique food items and their brand was yummy! There was a little pink imperfect Van that kindly delivered and the delivery guy said he would Carry it in for me since it Was heavy. They recycle if you leave the last box out. I think it may depend where you live.
Great video! I’ve only tried imperfect foods. I haven’t been that impressed with the produce & fruit. I get its imperfect but for the price it’s not a savings for me. I mostly buy organic produce so i don’t mind paying higher prices but i want good quality. I may try one of the others.
I used Imperfect Foods but like you felt the packaging was imperfect. I also had produce items delivered that had started to mold or was beyond the edible stage.
I've gotten a couple of boxes from Imperfect Foods and they were pretty good. I'm sorry they're no longer delivering to your area. I may try another service in the future. Thanks for your assessment of the three.
I used to get imperfect produce in Chicago where they had their own delivery trucks. I’m staying in Michigan now and they told me they don’t deliver here. I think some boxes are delivered by third parties, which may affect quality due to length of delivery time. I also get misfits boxes, and they use fed ex for delivery. I’ve had a few boxes delayed from misfits which resulted in damaged and poor quality items. Their customer service was great though.
I’ve used Misfits and Hungryroot. I agree with you 100%. I also like Hungryroot because it takes the stress out of healthy eating for me and makes it easy for me to prepare, thank you so much for sharing,
Imperfect messed up my orders so many times. They once sent me the moldiest block of cheese I couldn’t believe that got past the packing person. It was in clear packaging and completely green, how do you miss that?? Lol.
Seems like Misfits has improved greatly. I had many of the issues with them that you described with imperfect, but my imperfect boxes came perfectly intact. I’ve since moved out of the imperfect area, but I do miss their exclusive items, esp. the cheese trays that you got from the airlines. I stopped misfits because I always had an issue with food arriving in poor condition and then it would go bad quickly. Seems like they’ve improved and I may give them another try since we’re heading into spring/summer season.
Thanks Jen I was wondering about some of these companies. I've been thinking about ordering from them and this helps with my decision making. Another one I was looking into was Butcher Box.
I have been with Butcherbox and like it. Price has gone up due to inflation but I don't mind. I have cut back on the frequency I order because I have axdecent amount of meat in my fridge. Customer service is onpoint.
