airwickyeager Yeah. Listen to him talk for a minute, then listen to Guthrie Govan speak (check 'Professor Shred' series). As you said, California, goddamn.
@MutilatedMetalMatt Pretty much, i had to film 7 or 8 lessons for the upcoming issues on the spot with no preparation (didnt have time to prepare, was recording an ep/preparing for our euro tour) and it was Guitar World, needless to say i was nervous. Sorry guys, im a guitarist, not a public speaker.
This guy's writing concept is perfect. No different from a classical composer with years of theory. Do what sounds good and give it a mood, idea to convey, or some purpose.
Yeah it’s pretty interesting, he basically uses his own version of theory without thinking much of it. Like talking about big movements, and large intervals, and accenting offbeats
+Kek5kopF I guess you don't know much about djent or progressive metal, but most of it is played on 6 strings. In fact more than half of Periphery's material is played on 6 string guitars.
You guys are a trip. This guy goes in detail as best he can to try and help others who are not so advanced, to help understand and teach what so many love about what hes doing. I totally appreciate the fact this guy takes his time to literally spill it all out for you here in the simplest form but yet others complain.. LOL WOW.
being a master of music theory can allow you to play some amazingly complex stuff. Yet if you focus too much on creating a theoretically sound sequence of notes you lose that raw emotion that really speaks to those without knowledge in theory. Its one of the main reasons why classical music tends to only be truly appreciated by people who are knowledgeable in theory.
Metanoia facts. its like classic music and metal are opposites. metal is pure creativity with little to no rules. i hate how half the people on here talking about how he should know theory. hes amazing without knowing theory, to each his own
it means when the db reaches below a certain level it is cut out completely so you cant hear it. Thats why it sounds really snappy after he stops talking and there's no background noise
@JerkyChid And i also play and have deals with Ernie Ball, Decibel Guitars and Strandberg Guitars, working on something with Daemoness and Vigier at the moment as well. What can i say, i love amazing guitars!

uh ya know. uh well melodies. uh. i like it ya know? uh yeah
Guys, he's clearly talking about the riffs at a conceptual level. That that has merit should be fairly obvious. Just because it's neither a theory breakdown or a "here's the tab so you can play this too" session doesn't mean it isn't working as intended or doesn't have a purpose.
Yes perhaps they could have done a bit of editing with the " likes" and " uh's" but he's a musician and a very skilled and creative one at that, not a news anchor... since when are guitar players public speakers, he speaks through his fingers.
@thelilEmoBoy I didnt form or start "Djent", and i wasnt trying to do anything other than just create music that sounded good to me and that i could be proud of, the same is as true back then as it is today. Label it progressive or djent or whatever you want, but its all about having no limitations to me...
No offense to anyone who is talking about Misha Mansoor saying " uh uh... like uh like yea uh....." I just wanna point out that this man is an absolute genius when it comes to music. His lack of theory is amazing! for someone to create beautiful melodies, timing ect... with out any kind of theory or anything!?!?!? he was born with a gift! this man deserves RESPECT! Hes not good at "speaking" hes good at playing guitar like a God. Listen to every word he is saying, and try to recognize his beautiful creativity.
guildgsx Hey, man. Have you cleaned up your attitude? The internet can see how much of a piece of trash you are from last year. In fact, I've got a question for you... Do you like our Cheeto in Chief? Is that where your racist undertones and dysfunctional brain sprouted from?
@JerkyChid I'm pretty sure he is endorsed by Bernie Rico, it's just not an exclusive endorsement so he can play other guitars. Alex and Jake are endorsed by Ibanez though, hence they have customs made for them. Bulb was going to be but because he wanted to play different guitars he opted out and went for a non-exclusive deal with BRJ. Or so I believe.
it so funny how people comment on the most irrelevant part of the video (gate on the vocal....so what)....just shows there obvious lack of knowledge.....I actually learned a lot thanks Misha
"I don't know theory " >Writes odd meter riffs >Switches from Lydian to Phyrgian all the time in his songs >Dissonant chords and mind blowing harmonies What thee fuuu! Who are you fooling Misha 🤣
I've counted 75 "LIKE"s in this video. This video was 5:53 long. It means he says 75 likes in about 6 minutes. It makes 750 likes per hour, 9'000 per day and 3'285'000 per year... That's..like..impressive!
@CTUKeyes Ok you have made a point there. Im talking more generally but im sure there are contestants in the speed-race who are self-taught and know nothing about music theory
I love how he puts into words the same thing i kinda do, i know some music theory, but i'm not really thinking about that when i write things, i just kinda play stuff and see how it sounds and if it works together, knowing some theory around time signatures is definitely useful, but Eddie Van Halen once said "if it sounds good it is good", sure its great to know tons of theory, but its also just good to experiment and see what sounds good, who says you have to stick to any rules, if you wanna stick a crazy solo on some strange traditional instrument no ones heard of into a metal song, if it sounds good, do it because who knows how much awesome music we wouldn't have now if people just listened when someone said "that not how you compose music" or "no you can't mix those styles of music".
So funny watching guitarists on You Tube. They say 'I don't really know what I am doing." then they just shred. I think if you say "I don't know what I am really doing" you should be sounding fairly shit!
hey meisher fancy a gest solo slot on our new single- we hav a few beter gitarists who are up 4 it but we was wondring if u wud do it for free cuz our music is sik and djents 3 da max,
@MesaMXR Lol i actually gave the set away for my friend for free hahaha What pickups do u use mate, oh and your guitar 2 I be using a Schecter C1(i seriouly pimped it out tho)
+Harshit Arora Have you ever thought about the idea that he's only got a company making "signature" guitars because he is in a band that's making $? If he was just a YTer playing exactly what he's playing, he'd be laughed at.
You should at least give his current stuff a chance before dismissing it completely. You might be surprised. Mind you, he's literally breaking down his playing in this video lol
And also Mary had a little lamb is pretty easy to play. And sounds even more melodic than this. And you don't need the threshold on your noise gate set to a thousand to kill all the distortion feedback.
@p2psux5 hmm not sure. Most of those style of guitarists study a lot of classical and or jazz so they learn a bit about theory anway. Misha is one of the few guitarists who can play technical that has admitted he doesn't know much theory
gtfo trolls, why so much hate? these guys are redefining the word progressive in music, whether you like it or not...and for the ones who were complaining bout his "speaking skills", well as misha said, he's a musician, not a public speaker...and btw, it's fucking GW, wouldn't you be nervous? c'mon, periphery is finally getting the attention they deserve, go listen to their music, don't criticize things you don't even know..
'I kinda just like do this like note that I like shred like hammer on' . Don't get me wrong, I love Misha's stuff with Periphery, but I can't imagine not knowing notes and playing professionally. He's that good at playing what's in his head I suppose.
