42:18 " I really don't know how to describe it " Call a spade a spade and tell that you are fascinated with ideas about equality , democracy , human rights but you can't let go of your nostalgia for the feudal past where one group of people ruled over others . Those feudal minded people couldn't accept if electoral verdict went against them so they wanted a separate country with their supporters in the majority . So whoever stood for elections , your people would win . But this is not Democracy , this is match fixing .

37:31 " Mountbatten bias towards Nehru .... and has a clear bias against Jinnah " Obviously , since Nehru belonged to a party that was winning elections and getting votes . Jinnah was basically a nuisance who had only one card to deal with and that was the religion card . Jinnah's party initially failed to get votes from even the Muslims which is why they decided to provoke Hindu Muslim antagonism to consolidate their Political position . He put fear of violence among common Muslims and Hindus who wanted nothing but a normal life with basic necessities like food , income and housing .

The upper caste Hindus are rich mostly doctors and landlord Rajputs in Sindh like amarkot or umarkot. Clearly you have not researched or cited the work of Prof Ishtiaq Ahmed of Stockholm who has laid threadbare the facts around Jinnah and his single minded fanatical pursuit of Pakistan. Tactically brilliant but strategically obtuse, Jinnah bequeathed a conundrum to his acolytes who simply did not have the vision or acumen to evolve a coherent narrative around Pakistan. For the Indian audience it is significant that grand dad Shahid was the founding Director General of the now dreaded ISI that has caused so much bloodshed and mayhem in India and time and again derailed peace between India and Pakistan.

Weird analysis of history. No discussion of two nation theory. Supports the basic rationale of partition that minorities needed to have special rights but when that Pakistan came into being, they moved to to the other extreme and minorities completely trampled on. In fact Jinnah's Independence Day speech is officially expunged from all records in his own Pakistan. Even if one were to (reluctantly) agree that Jinnah was secular, Pakistan officially rejects secularism. So what was the Pakistan movement about ?

@@viswanathanseshadri1047 My experience and undertanding is that cultural and religious practices are very central to expression of being a Hindu. Even theologically, there is a cleave between worshippers Shiva and Vishnu. And what of Brahma? Part of the trinity in name only? Then there are highly developed and nuanced practices depending on region, caste and family traditions and also choice of guru or a particular temple. Fascinating and diverse but by no means easy to analyse or understand using conventional means. The pity of it that so few Hindus are willing to acknowledge this, especially during this time, where an admixture of religiosity and politics is presented to Hindu Indians as national identity.

@@martycrow yes, cultural and religious practices are central to Hindus also. But (1) Those practices are meant for us, not for you. (2) These are practices which have evolved over time. We don't plan to impose this on the rest of the world. We don't plan to invite either the rest of the world to doing how we do things. We don't expect everyone else to adopt these practices. My mother always talked of the good relations between muslim, sikh and hindu communities. Worth remembering that both Hindu and Muslim senior members were involved and agreed to the partition. The violence that followed was carried out by both parties. Indescribable level of bigotry and violence on both sides.

Mahatma Gandhi died the same year as Jinnah , in fact seven months earlier. It was a tragedy for India as well . But India went on to become a successful Democracy while pakistan still struggles to become one . Indian freedom movement wasn't dependent on one person - after Gandhi , there were Nehru Patel Ambedkar Shastri and more . Even before Gandhi , there were Bal Gangadhar Tilak , Lala Lajpat Rai , Gopal Krishna Gokhale and others But pakistan was only about Jinnah and Jinnah alone . With his death , pakistan was finished .

❤ Thank you both for this informative and lively conversation. Forty-five minutes went by rather quickly. It's outright hilarious to see people arriving at definitive conclusions about the history and politics of the Indian partition after listening to such a short conversation on such an extraordinarily large event in history. Most of the comments gave me a nice chuckle. Reading "While Memory Serves" by Lieutenant-General Sir Francis Tuker, the GOC Eastern Command in 1946, it's not difficult to conclude that the partition was an outcome of 'damned if you do, and damned if you don't.' They damned doing it. 😊

Before imperial British Empire started to rule The subcontinent, the Muslim ruled India, muslims were in good powerful positions. Indian subcontinent under muslim rule held 25% of world economy. After the Briyish left Indian subcontinent, muslims because completely and utterly disenfranchised, whilst Collective economy of Subcontinent shrank to 3%. The partition brought utter suffering and ruin for muslims. Muslim wealth was stolen thus starting the planned downfall of Subcontinent Muslims. This has been the Biggest Injustice promulgated in the world with repercussions still affecting Muslims South Asia. Muslim must be given back their rightful position and wealth that was stolen from them . Partition has been the biggest injustice delivered to muslims.

The book holds promise of being an intelligent, humane and authentic examination of families and lives that straddle India-Pakistan and Britain through complex entanglements of lives, histories and journeys. The multi-cultural and multi-faith aspects are not always at the forefront but ever present - from the Irish and Catholic great-grandparents, the impact of families divided to an unexpected later connection with Auchinleck, an intriguing figure. Enjoyed this book launch discussion. Thanks!

Partition is a myth. India was never a country before 1947 but always a sub continent. Many independent kingdoms and counteries existed in it that had been conquering and butchering each other for mellenias, pretty much like in Europe. The actual partition took place in Punjab and Bengal, both had been independent kingdoms before Brits colonized them. In 1947 most of these kingdoms and states merged to create two new counteries. One called itself Pakistan, the other however conscripted the very name of this subcontinent for itself. The very word India comes from a province and a river of Pakistan, Sindh and river Indus respectively. Sindh is the fountain of Indus valley civilization. Imagined a large country emerges in Asia which then called itself Asia and then claims it always existed. That's what happened in 1947
@tusharvarma5335
@tusharvarma5335 2 месяца назад
Your understanding of subcontinental history is pathetic and your ignorance is pathological. Read done real history both by contemporary historians and a few of non subcontinental writers to really understand the time and characters that played a role in shaping the history of independence and partition. BTW, Indus River fed the people of current Pakistan much before she came into existence, LOL!
@iaf010
@iaf010 2 месяца назад
Typical Pakistani understanding based on ignorance and ahistorical nonsense. Even Arrian, the biographer of Alexander of Macedonia describes "Indoi" the people and the land as from the Himalayas to the Seas and gives descriptions of how vast and varied it was. The prospect faced by the Macedonians of having to conquer another land 5-10 times greater than Persia was what caused them to rebel against Alexander and demand to return home.

sub-continent? Who came up with that word? The british? When did the name Bharat varsh come about? Thousands of years ago and not in 1947. What arabs called hindustan, if it was just a region?
@aqeelkhurshid4860
@aqeelkhurshid4860 2 месяца назад
Learn some history, Bharat Varsha refers to only the western part of Gangetic valley. Arab, Japanese or Latinos can use any word they want. The fact remains that without Sindh and river Indus you don't have an identity. As long as you continue to use the words India and Hindustan, you'll have to keep confronting the reality of acknowledging that people of Pakistan (mainly Sindhis and Punjabis) gave you your name. If you disagree then enlighten as to what is the origin of these words
@sukritbanerjee
@sukritbanerjee 2 месяца назад
@@aqeelkhurshid4860lol, first of all you should know that Indus flows through India even now. Secondly, the pre-Islamic history of Pakistan is the history of a Hindu-Buddhist civilization, which Pakistan doesn't identify with. This civilization- the Harappan, Vedic, Mauryan, Kushan, Indo Greek- belongs to India. India has always existed, Pakistan was only born in 1947. Don't indulge in copium. Bharatvarsha referred to the land " between the Himalayas and the seas".
