The film “Mishik Kazaryan: the Path of an Explorer” (original title «Мишик Казарян: путь Искателя») is dedicated to the life and professional path of Professor Mishik Kazaryan, an outstanding Russian scientist in the field of laser physics. He died in April 2020 from COVID-19 just a few days after his wife Arpik Asratyan, a well-known epidemiologist and virologist. Mishik Kazaryan was a Laurate of the Soviet State Prize for pioneering work on metal vapor lasers. He was an author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles. His colleagues from the P.N.Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, as well as his relatives and friends, take part in this documentary.
The film is in Russian, this is a version with English subtitles.

I met Prof. Kazaryan just once in the late 1990-s but we were many years in touch working in close research fields. He was an inventor of the copper vapor laser, as well as a pioneer in a wide spectrum of innovations in the field of laser physics, optics, nanotechnology, and hydrogen energy. The film reminded me of an epoch I witnessed myself too. I could observe a striking resemblance of academic environment in leading research institutions of the US and the Soviet Union / Russia. All this in spite of obvious differences. I recommend this documentary, it brings to reflections about science and dedications. It would be great to have more documentaries about scientists. Unfortunately, it looks that the modern movie industry is not very keen to prioritize documentaries about science and great scientists.

Very touching film. A history of great discoveries in laser physics. The untimely death of a prominent scientific couple due to COVID-19 at a peak of their scientific careers. Very dramatic destiny. If not the pandemic and this misfortune, they could continue to contribute with their inexhaustible energy and talent many years ahead...

Professor Mishik Kazaryan was both a brilliant scientist, educator and narrator. I was honoured to hear his outstanding lectures on laser physics. Besides I remember how passionate he told me about his homeland Armenia, a very ancient country with rich culture but tragic history. His passionate telling stimulated me to buy a book about Armenia to better know this wonderful country (I hope once I will travel to Armenia). I see that this documentary embraces not only his prominent scientific discoveries, but also a story of his love and dedication both to Armenia and Russia. Due to the cold war scientific contributions of the Soviet scientists were largely belittled. It was astonishing to discover with help of Professor Kazaryan that many fundamental scientific discoveries, made by Soviet physicists, were still widely credited to others, all this despite publications revealing this. I remember the day when I and my colleagues heard about the death of Professor Kazaryan, it was a shock... I was honoured to meet her wife Prof. Arpik Asratyan too. They were a very talented and beautiful couple...

I enjoyed watching this film. It is in a way both a scientific documentary about the development of the copper vapor laser and a biographic film about Professor Mishik Kazaryan in one. The apt narration of a film reporter enables the viewer to experience virtually the epoch of great scientific discoveries.
