As a youth she was active in theatre, dance and music programs at her schools and her church. Ellen has worked as a radio personality, voice over artist and freelance writer. She is a member of the Journalism Institute of Media Diversity at Wayne State and is majoring in broadcast journalism. "Tearing down women does tear down the community" just like studies show if girls and women aren't being educated and given the same (equal) rights as men the whole community suffers. Help women and you help the whole community to thrive.

I like hip-hop genre, and I am also interested in how to deal with women in this genre, so I watched this video. In this video, Ellen talks about the misogynistic lyrics that are common in hip-hop lyrics, briefly mentions the history of hip-hop, and tells us that these expressions have not been together since the beginning of hip-hop. The most interesting part was her explanation about this phenomenon through ownership and outlook. She says hip-hop has changed its format or style as the music market and industry change, which has led to a loss of ownership. She also explains that hip-hop's outlook began to be programmed differently than before due to the chain reaction. On the other hand, her views were new, interesting, and made sense. Nevertheless, it was also regrettable that these explanations alone could not be fully explained about the misogyny in the genre of hip-hop. Following Ellen's explanation, I wanted to look for other perspectives on this issue. Lastly, I would like to thank Ellen for her speech, and put a period with quoting her words which was very impressive. "Even though it seems like it's a really big problem, the solution is so small. It's as simple as shifting your playlist."

So strange to me. And I haven't even checked out her playlist because I know Cardi is on there...and that's another antiblack conversation that folks aren't ready to have.

babyfaced bella. How? Late 80s and 90s was the golden era for hip hop. Sure the beef between biggie and Tupac was toxic but the music itself was deep and meaningful due to people like Nas and Tupac. Storytelling in hip hop in full effect due to people like slick Rick and wu tang. It had fun and witty due to artists like biggie smalls. I really don’t know how you think it’s “toxic”.
@viridimagoria1778
@viridimagoria1778 4 года назад
I agree. Late 70s/80s hip hop did have some sexist lyrics and weren't particularly diverse, but it wasn't anything too malicious. Then the 90s rolled around and gangsta rap came around, where violence against women was not only common grounds, but almost embracing and bathing in it. Nowadays it's the same, except now the glorification of wealth and materialism is the new common topic, almost just as worst.

can someone reply what are the reasons why there is a misogyny in hop hop? thanks. English is not my first language so I didn't understand some parts of it
@SuperAmaku
@SuperAmaku 3 года назад
What I got is that misogyny has always been a part of American (and human) history, but the moment hip hop turned misogynistic was when the mc's (=rappers) lost ownership to their music when the indie labels and radio stations turned commercial. The people in charge were disconnected from the streets and the "actual stories" and it somehow warped the lyrics of hip hop to a more misogynistic direction with less women involved as well. Apparently they decided men can sell more and better if they're talking down on and over women and it became mainstream? Anyone can correct or add more if they got something else

I'm kinda surprised she recommended Kendrick Lamar at the end. I mean I like his music and a lot of his lyrics are definitely fairly social conscious and clever, but the amount of demeaning terms he uses for women is out of control (especially the B-word). I think he repeats that word like 100 times in his song HUMBLE.

The "bitches" in HUMBLE. aren't women. They're men, with many of the bars directed at other rappers. We can safely assume that those rappers are men, since women are rarely included or considered in the term "rapper" or "MC." Women who are lyricists usually get tagged with "female" before their title to separate them.
