The King's Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence with a Top-5 Nationally-Ranked Fine Arts Program, recently performed "Miss Saigon" on its main stage in the Page Family Center for Performing Arts. Starring sophomore Aubee Billie (Kim), senior Clay Hider (2019 Jimmy Awards nominee, Christopher Scott), senior Kyle Martin (John Thomas), sophomore Olivia Henley (2019 Jimmy Awards nominee, Ellen Scott), junior Chris Santiago (The Engineer), and senior Chris Pappas (Thuy), and a talented ensemble cast--this musical was an instant crowd favorite.
TKA’s Conservatory of the Arts, a two-time American High School Theatre Festival award-winning fine arts program, is led by Mr. David Snyder (Artistic Director, Musical Theater, Department Chair), Mr. Nathan Adams (Vocal Arts), Mrs. Cathy Higgins (Dance- Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz), Mr. Douglas Gawriljuk (Dance- Ballet and Modern), Miss Sarah Fahey (Theatre Arts), Mr. Brad Majzner (Stagecraft), Mr. David Skinner (Instrumental Director), Mr. Wes Lowe (Assistant Band Director), Mr. Patrick Clifford (Strings), Mrs. Macey Norton (Video/Digital Arts), Mrs. Lauren Moxey (Visual Art), Mrs. Stephanie Grasso (Elementary Choir, Woodwinds), and Mrs. Robin Phillips (Piano).

It's funny that you said you wished you lived in Florida, so you could have seen this. I was just about to write that I wished I lived in Florida, so I could see all the King's Academy performances in person. They have exceptionally gifted students. 🙂🐱🐦🎶

This is so incredible. Aubee is truly going places. But I’m wondering why she is still wearing the Ao Dai. Not trying to be rude, I think this is a wonderful production, I’m just wondering about the costume choice. ❤️

Agreed even if she’s wearing this, it at least should be ragged in some way to show that Kim is a refugee and probably the only thing she owns

It’s a real question. You aren’t being rude :) this is after the VC has taken over, she would have most likely been in more of a poor choice of clothing, more old ragged and torn. I was wondering the same thing.

What sort of idiot could give this truly remarkable performance a thumbs down? It could only be jealousy, and that is so sad. The performances throughout this entire production are almost unbelievably good; in singing, acting, and in the production values. Thank you for sharing with us the talents of these future Broadway and West End stars (if that is the difficult and competitive path they chose). 'Miss Saigon' brings the story of the opera 'Madam Butterfly' in a form and idiom that can speak to a potentially wider audience

I agree about the performances. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this school's performances and those on Broadway. They are THAT good!

@@mrjamiecrawford You are conflating two different (although similarly intentioned) comments into something that isn't quite what was said. Of course there are differences, but I think the intent of Scootermom's comment relates to the quality and intensity of the work of the performers. Take the performers here and put them into a professionally mounted production (and even in that, all this production lacked was the budget) and they would stand comparison with seasoned professionals. If you haven't seen this complete production, it may be worth with-holding your comment until then. All of the cast members are excellent, but Clayton Hider, the male lead, shows amazing maturity and insight into the role, only exceeded by Aubee Billie (above) in a heart-wrenching portrayal of Kim, the central role. Unfortunately, the Academy releases their shows in segments. I edited them together to be able to watch the entire production without breaks. Watching this complete performance gives as much satisfaction as when I saw the pro version, live.

I don't think that I would need to see all of the performance to say that this performer doesn't have the same vocal ability as many of the people who have starred in Miss Saigon on Broadway or in London. Vocal ability is nothing to do with the budget of a production. I think that this performance was nice but it certainly could not be put directly on a Broadway stage. I wasn't saying that it was bad, I was comparing the vocals of this performer and some of the leading cast in Miss Saigon.

@@mrjamiecrawford I realise you weren't saying the performance was without merit, but there is more to performing a role such as this than just vocal ability - acting ability is of more-or-less equal importance, and that is why I am looking at her ability in the context of interpreting the role in its entirety. Assessing her just on her singing, I think that just now she has a tendency to almost shout at times of dramatic intensity - something that she will better control with more experience. But in context of her acting and developing the character, this works for her, giving power that could be lost by her short stature. When I watch the complete performance, she repeatedly convinces me, moving me to tears at times. Certainly she still has a way to go to reach her full potential, but already, with good direction, she could appear on Broadway - perhaps not quite ready for a lead role, but then, with the right director etc, perhaps she could take a lead role - who knows?
