Ingenuity Mars helicopter was damaged during its 72nd flight and with the Perseverance's Supercam capturing the splitting of the blade in half on Feb 25, 2024. Showcased the intense impact experienced of the helicopter. Rover's component strength and durability under real Martian conditions have been tested.
The challenging Martian atmosphere, known for strong winds and dust storms, likely contributed to the damage, with wind gusts on Mars reaching up to 60 miles per hour posing a significant threat to delicate equipment like helicopter blades.
Data from Perseverance rover's instruments, including the Supercam, suggests rough winds may have played a role in the hard landing and blade damage registered on Perseverance's camera on February 25, 2024. Additionally, mine 4K renders were included in the video to visualize the impact of damaging winds on the Mars helicopter.

This amazing bot can land upright even after an apparent crash with broken blades and countries are having issues landing on the moon upright.

Harder to stay upright after above nominal speed touchdown when the gravity is lower.
@wally7856
@wally7856 3 месяца назад
@@_John_P Yes. Inertia stays the same but gravity is 1/6th's of Earth on the Moon. That means your tipping force from sideways inertia is the same, but your righting force from your CG is 1/6th that of Earth. Much much easier to tip in lower gravity which is why the astronauts on the apollo missions kept falling over.

It must have been some wind. I gather that to have any effect at all the wind speeds have to be really ferocious due to the low atmospheric pressure of ~ 7mB. It's a shame as we all loved the wee guy.

Five flights over a couple weeks. That’s all that it was tasked to do. But… we’ll just keep flying it until it wears out and the rotor breaks off. Ok… how long will that take? Dunno. Could be one. Might be two, or three. 1-3 what? YEARS!!

Maybe perseverance can make a final stop when it's job is done and use its arm to lift the little helicopter onto it's back, then someday when we live on Mars we might could collect both of them for history. Just a thought.

Fun fact : The Mars rovers use VxWorks operating system and Ingenuity uses Linux. So these two OS's are in fact being used on two planets and receive interplanetary updates and commands.

Too bad Perseverance can not roll up to the ingenuity helicopter, pick it up and place on a level surface. Then it would swap out the bad blades with some spares. The rover would have to have AI capability. Also a rover should be able to go over the solar panel with a duster, and a puff of Martian air. Was a great helicopter.
