That is a really clever way to visualize what we are missing out on! But it is hard to figure out how we would get those to fit in, and separate to that there's a lot of blocks which are just to textured to reasonably use even if they have the right color to them!

A few things I've noted in getting around Minecraft's restricted palette: Blocks behind semi-transparent blocks, especially glass blocks, can greatly increase the palette artificially, although this is only useful for flat surfaces where the glass block can be fully recessed. Light level blocks (or lack thereof) can adjust the shading of a block (this might seem obvious, but it's something that other people I've talked to haven't considered.) Dithering and hue adjusting the source image greatly improves palette conversion. I'm working on a way to best automate this process using imagemagick atm

I especially love the deep blue/purple? Colour at 6:46. And I completely agree, Minecraft is especially lacking colours in the blue/purple/cyan range. I have protanopia (a form of colourblindness), which means my red light receptors don't work at all. This results in all the red, yellow, green, orange, brown, and lime type colours looking like one primary colour, and all the blue, pink, purple, etc like another. For me Minecraft doesn't look like a colourful game, because the majority of textures fall under one primary colour for me. If they added more blue related textures it would make the game much more enjoyable for me

As a pixel artist it’s always really hard to colour match some colours, especially with shades of purple. My idea is a leather block, crafted with 8 leather and a wool. You could dye them with a cauldron just like leather armour and horse armour The amount of colours you can get with the leather stuff in the game is astronomical, so having a block that you could dye would be a lifesaver

It would be pretty hard to implement, each block would have its color that has to be stored in each block separately. "Packed" foliage, leaves, grass, bushes, would be a great way to get those yellows and greens in. The blues, teals and cyans would definitely be easiest to add in underwater structures, though some of them could also easily be added in ice biome expansions. Maybe some hybrid water temple for an ice ocean? Some new terrain generation in the snowy tundra or ice spikes biome, maybe. Adding some if not all of the purples to the Nether would help a lot with that, too. Surprised that pale orange color doesn't already exist among the existing terracottas, given it's proximity to actual pottery-related stuff. You could probably get the pink on the end of your bar with a berry dye of some sort, which could also cover some of the missing purples, but that magenta is so flippantly unnatural a color that I think that one in particular might be hopeless.

The mustard colour could also be a wood, or maybe like you said just some sort of dead plant block (maybe dried hay bales?) A lot of the more colourful ones could be new crystals and minerals, the bright reddish magenta could be Bixbite or something, or the forest green could be Olivine.

Maybe some honey-like fluid witches have in cauldrons that causes a random effect or amount of damage when you put it in a splash potion? 4:29 This feels like a color that would fit nicely in the Nether to me for some reason. Or they could over hall the dye system by allowing us to combine dyes to make specific color like how we can dye leather. And when we come up with these dyes, we can use them for concrete and terracotta and wool to fill in the gaps we are missing. Maybe even allow us to dye wood planks and stripped wood, or even various stone blocks. And like terracotta, these blocks would have a base color that you add to, so it wouldn't be pure, red or blue or yellow, but something else to give more variety.

Okay, I had a comment a few months back that was talking about an automatic generator for textures that would create a texture that would have the missing colors as the average color of the texture itself. But I definitely think that would take the manual/handcrafted nature away from the texture creation. As a fix for the idea, maybe creating a color picker that gently restricts the colors that can be used could be nice. And by "gently restricts" it could either take away all colors that wouldn't average out to the wanted color, OR it could just tell the user if the texture itself averages out to the desired color or not. If it works by the second option, it could offer to fix the texture by just "pushing" the colors of the texture towards colors that do indeed average out towards the desired color. There would probably be a range of different collections of colors that would work, but I'm sure there would be a sort of "closest" match within the color pushing space that would work. With the least amount of color pushing equaling out to the best option.

I know others have already described this, but having block sorting options like this would be fantastic. Different Color Spaces definitely are an option, but it could also be useful to sort by the standard deviation of the colors on the blocks, too. Entropy is an amazing topic, too. Chaos versus Order within the texture itself. Would it be possible/reasonable to create some automatic generator to create block textures that fit whatever empty pocket that you want? Perhaps giving a few different variations?

You may want to try a perceptually uniform colorspace, like CIELAB.

Just found this video! Have you ever considered making an MCreator mod for these colors? I believe these’d do nicely in a terracotta or concrete as some sort of weird End Badlands or something.
@kayleighlehrman9566

They could take the existing colours of wool, terracotta, and concrete, and make more saturated and less saturated versions of them.

Mojang should see this, it will inspire new blocks for their development.

You should replace the air blocks with light blocks so that you can see every side of each block fully lit

good idea, I can add it to the next version.

Something that would be cool would be a "color mixer" where you for instance combine cyan and magenta to create 2 blue dyes, then you can keep combining to get incredibly close to the exact rgb value you want and you could add it do any dyable block like wool, concrete or glass. This would fill out the entire spectrum. Maybe rather than having a separate block for color mixing, upgrade the crafting table to allow this kind of mixing so it can be automated with the auto crafter. This sounds horrible to do if you want tons and tons of the same color, so automating it sounds better.

Or maybe you could use Bedrock's cauldron-dying system for that; it already works for leather/wolf armor, so why not some special blocks?
@Mulakulu
@Mulakulu 2 месяца назад
@@MattTOB618 True. That's a good idea, but I wouldn't want to spend tens of dye to tune in the correct color to then only be able to dye just a couple things. If I spend 10 dye to get the exact color I want, I should get roughly 10 dye out of it
@MattTOB618
@MattTOB618 2 месяца назад
@@Mulakulu I mean, even with Java's current system, you can spend 8 dye on just 1 piece of leather armor; with the Bedrock cauldrons, you get to dye 6 items the exact same color (since dying using a Cauldron on Bedrock only uses ⅙ of the water inside, compared to a glass bottle filling/removing ⅓).

Would it be easy to set up a colour palette using hsv? I'd really like to see how well filled in the our concept of colour is in minecraft. I absolutely love your videos, they always offer an insight I never knew I lacked!

they wont ever do this, but could be a cool mod if concrete could be dyed multiple times, like leather armour can be. That would let you get so many more colours in the game

Yeah I wonder how much they think about this. I'm guessing they don't start with colors and work backwards. Besides the gray tones, there isn't actually much overlap so maybe they at least try and not duplicate colors.

maybe just make them paint for wood. we have dyes for wool and beds and banners so it doesn't seem unreasonable to have paint as well

we don't need 200 more colored blocks, we need 1 plain full block set which can be dyed like leather armor and which can use custom model data when placed
