If your company is like many Google Analytics users, you didn't make the migration to GA4 until the July 1 deadline was approaching. Because of that, your GA4 reports now don't have year-over-year data. And of course your executive team wants to see that data compared to current results, right?
We take a look at how you can import historic Universal Analytics, and your current GA4 data, into Looker Studio and do a year-over-year comparison. However, we do caution that UA data is not exactly the same at GA4 data. Take a look at our video below to see how they differ:
GA4 vs. Google Universal Analytics: • Google Analytics 4 vs....

I'm trying to compare "transactions" from UA and GA4 year on year. Sessions is fine as it matches up, but the transactions metric will not work. Any way around this?

In GA4 what you want is the "purchase" event, if that's not what you're comparing. Transactions were renamed in GA4, as were a number of other metrics.

But now that Google is no longer going to store UA data after july 2024. Where can we store our UA data to bring into looker studio?

You can download the data in spreadsheets, which can then be used as a source in Looker Studio. That data can also be added to third-party data platforms such as Google's BigQuery, where it can also be pulled into Looker or other data visualization tools. It's not a very elegant solution, but unless you had Google 360, it's one of your only options.

Thank you for the video. I was the one to ask the question for this video! I was able to get around with a lot of the metric by choosing Year of Month and Month Year as the common dimension. For a more in depth reporting some metrics have to be included but they are not the same in GA4 and UA. How can I tell for example "users" and "Total Users" is the same thing? Do you have a cheat sheet with all the metrics that were used in UA and what they're called right now in GA4.

Great question. What makes it more complicated is that GA4 users some terms in standard reports, e.g. "users", when it's really talking about "total users". But in this case users = total users, but that's different from new users and engaged users. We'll work on a cheat sheet, since there are probably others with the same issue.

I found a way to do this. You need to follow the same process as the second option in the video. Start the table with G4 and "Total Users" data, and then you can blend the data with UA. This will help Looker to take the new G4 data first and compare vs UA. If you do it the other way it doesn't compare it with G4.
