A paddleboard and dry bag belonging to a South Florida paddleboarder who went missing on Monday were found miles offshore, U.S. Coast Guard officials said Wednesday. ⁠

Luciano Mercenari, 29, was last seen around Monday near Cape Florida on Pines Canal in Key Biscayne, Coast Guard officials said.⁠

His equipment was found offshore between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, according to the Coast Guard.⁠

Very sad and tragic for this young man to lose his life. The sea can be very treacherous. I live in SF so I know that area well. The currents can be deceiving. I went snorkeling/diving off the coast in relatively shallow water. Was down only a few minutes, came back up & I had already drifted so far from my boat. Luckily I was with family but it’s so easy to get into a precarious situation out at sea, especially if you’re alone. I hope they do find him though so his family can a have a small sense of closure/peace.

Haven't we been seeing more and more sharks in this area? Speer fishing draws sharks. They like free fish too. The blood on the water may have drew sharks. The sharks have been more aggressive. 6'2 means nothing to a shark. Did he have any medical issues? So many things can go wrong. Was there no other people around? Wow! Praying for his family!

You follow the Tidal and Wind Directions in the area, Fishermen know where the drift goes. Spear fishing? Sharks can smell blood for miles in the water.They will attack if your amongst any "Chum Bait" by Accident .Best of Luck 👍

God bless his family with strength to overcome this tragedy. I’m surprised he was on a a cheaper end board used to learn to-paddle board considering he was an experienced paddle boarder?? Possibly deflated in the middle of the ocean?? Crazy how they haven’t found him. Weather has been horrific in Miami rain thunder storms. 🙏🏻😢
