This is the first movie I saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman in, where I noticed him and needed to find out the name of this actor. He was so intense, terrifying, noticeable, unforgettable and impressive.
It's fascinating in hindsight storyline wise that he's basically retired to a teaching role within the IMF, only to come out of it and go on crazier and crazier missions since. Also this was technically 17 yrs ago, holy crap
This movie didn't even do that well. The 6 year gap since M:I-2 and Tom Cruise's public antics at the time(couch jumping, Scientology, contentious interview with Matt Lauer) hurt the box office. I was surprised when they did a 4th one with almost another 6 year gap and Cruise pushing 50, but that wound being a great decision given how successful Ghost Protocol turned out.
When a reporter was talking to Simon Pegg about the success of Shaun of the Dead he said "it's not like I'm going to be in the next Mission Impossible film" and he was
Abrams loves to start stories in media res, then do the "XX Hours Earlier" title card. That was how half the episodes of ALIAS started. In fact, ALIAS is how Abrams got the M:I gig. Cruise saw several episodes of the show and said, "This guy would be perfect for the next film." And Abrams was perfect for it. He set the basic style and tone for the rest of the franchise. He doesn't get enough credit for that.
This is my favorite, because it is so personal for Ethan. The villain is great, the action is crazy, but still feels grounded. So many twists, the pacing is high and perfect. Love your reaction to it.
Lawrence Fishburne is one of the only actors who can convincingly deliver a line like "I shit you not, I will bleed on the flag to make sure the stripes stay red."
Phillp Seymour Hoffman was an outstanding actor. He has such range from lovable to loathable to terrifying. I highly recommend Capote as a film of his that shows his skill.
What I like are the little touches a attention to details here and there that totally sell their real life training. At 6:04 when Ethan tosses Lindsay a weapon and she starts shooting - watch her eyes. It is INSANELY difficult to *not blink* when firing a weapon. It's instinctive - everyone does it automatically - and it takes a LOT of concentration and training to stop yourself from doing it. The fact that they made the effort to address that... *chef's kiss*
In "Along Came the Spider", one of the leads (playing FBI) surprised her weapon's instructor because she would not blink when firing her weapon. They told her is really rare and hard to do. Mel Gibson is Lethal Weapon blinks like crazy for a sniper.
17:05 this BRIDGE scene takes place in my city of Virginia Beach, about 15 minutes from where I live. It's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which is an underwater tunnel system in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, which is actually a 15 mile bridge with four separate underwater tunnels. The tunnels only take up about 5 of the 15 miles. We see memes about people saying they would never drive through it, but they don't know we have two more bridge tunnels EVERYONE has to go through every day as we are a HUGE military area with Navy(my dad), Air Force, etc.. When we saw this we laughed, because some shots were filmed on the bridge, but we could easily tell when it was not the actual thing. Especially the fake license plates.
Isn’t this the same bridge used in True Lies and Licence to Kill? That was always my understanding- and that movies mostly use an old disused bridge beside a rebuilt one.
Great script, yes, but JJ Abrams direction feels way too frenetic and jarring at times, like he is trying way too hard to keep an audiences attention. (Shaky cam, quick cut edits throughout every action scene) Maybe it was his intention to make the audience feel anxiety throughout, but I much preferred the calm, cool and collected yet fun nature of the 2nd movie more.
@@handsomeDRACInteresting. This is precisely why this is my favorite. The pacing and energy is so different from the the rest of the series. To each his own though.
Seymour-Hoffman is SO good in this role. He plays a great evil person. And this film really amped up the action and overall darker, more serious tone of the films. They really get incredible here on out.
Abrams *is* the lens flare guy, BTW. Also, he did both direct and produce the first Chris Pine Star Trek movie, in addition to Into Darkness, as well as the first and third of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He is also actually the *creator* of "Alias," as well as an earlier show starring Keri Russell (Agent Farris) called "Felicity." Hoffman is actually reuniting with Cruise here, with the two of them having made the all-time great drama magnolia in 1999, which coincidentally (since George mentioned it) is by Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Boogie Nights. Can't wait for you guys to progress through 4-7 -- the movies after this are all varying degrees of great. In a pretty low-key way, this also kicks off the tradition of Tom Cruise doing major stunts in these. In this case, I believe you're correct that he did the Shanghai building jump for real, and that then the cuts are greenscreen. It does become much more obvious in the subsequent movies what he did for real, though.
I was just thinking that when they mentioned that in this vid. I was like.. well we gotta get them to react to that movie. Pretty good Bruce Willis film honestly. One of the better films too when he's not the Protagonist of the film.
I love your movies reacts! I especially enjoy when, on screen, someone is speaking a Chinese dialect, and George is able to provide the translation! Bother when there are captions, and we learn if they're accurate, and also when no, and we would otherwise never know what the random Chinese guard on the rooftop was yelling as baseballs came flying in from out of nowhere!
The bridge at 17:00 is indeed the same one as in True Lies. It's a section of the old bridge to the Florida Keys. When they built the new one (which I think you see in the background) they kept large sections of the old one intact. I'm not sure if they use it for emergencies, but they certainly do let film makers do their thing with it (no doubt for a significant fee).
Yeah, for me the series really kicks into gear and finds its tone starting with Part 4. Chris McQuarrie was the perfect choice to take the franchise over.
Hospitals, at least in the US, always have chapels. They're generally meant to be quiet places, like a library, and so they're a room where you an go and grieve/pray. A friend of mine got married in a hospital chapel, because she was supposed to be getting married and two weeks before her wedding, it was found out her mother had cancer and she was going to pass away. Two days before she passed, my friend and her fiance got married there, so that her mother could be present.
18:25 "Why did he fly sideways?" Thank you George! I've been asking the same thing for years! It was in the trailers too, so I kept seeing the same thing over and over again. 😅
Funny how you mention a similarity to "Winter Soldier" before the elevator scene and the disguise scene ... (both of which are also in "Winter Soldier").
the explosion where he flew to the side on the bride was made by him being pulled by a wire into the car in full speed running, so he run as fast as he can and then he is pulled into a car. they did the scenes OVER and OVER and OVER again because tom cruise said it looked like "it did not hurt enough" and he got more and more bruised up every time they did it ... jaeh ... but damn the final cut looks like it hurts xD
Glad you guys got to this one. For me, I’ve seen every movie in this series when they came out. Didn’t like the first two and never rewatched them but from part 3 to the newest one, I’ve really liked them and have seen them multiple times.
You guys are in for an interesting ride if you continue along the MI journey. Cruise is notorious for doing his own stunts, well, in one of the coming MI films, Cruise broke his ankle during a stunt, it is the take that they used for the film and he can be seen limping away. Keep that in mind and see if you can spot it.
I went to this movie thinking "I'll do this all backwards -- I'll hate on Cruise and root for Hoffman." NOPE. Hoffman refused to let that happened, he made me hate him so much. That is acting. Oh, I do miss him.
Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Maggie Q, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Simon Pegg and Laurence Fishburne and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman (R.I.P) did a fantastic job is this movie, what am i saying they always do great in everything
Corridor Digital featured the Tom Cruise to Philip Seymour Hoffman mask transition scene in their video "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi 111". And their reaction to the overall effect was the same as Simone & George's.
You should love the next ones. I strongly suggest watching a few select episodes of the original series as well. It's more intrigue than action but it is, in my humble opinion, one of the best TV series ever made.
M:I3 was a game changer for the series and I love it to this day. What is the most beautiful however, that from this point the franchise is only getting better and better - fantastic job of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie 👍🏻
Corridor Digital recently did a cgi breakdown of that mask transition. It's in the middle of the episode but I think they have a chapter selection so you can watch that part specifically
Probably the darkest entry in the MI-series, with a downright terrifying opening. This movie isn't my personal favorite of the series (Rogue Nation is) but this one gave us a much more personal story for Ethan, some brutal action, and of course! Simon Pegg who is a DELIGHT and I can't wait for you to see the later movies where he has a much bigger part!
You two should watch "The Heartbreak Kid". A very funny comedy that stars Ben Stiller. Michelle Monaghan, Ethans wife is in it also. You would have a real fun time with that one if both or either one of you have never seen it. Didn't everyone tell you guys that the franchise hets way better after the second one, and they keep getting better. Benji became a regular part of the team starting here.
At this point a major goal of the series was to have each one directed by a different well known director with a strong style. So the tone will vary a lot from movie to movie.
And this is where things just keep getting better and better!!😁Philip seymor Hoffman is easily one of the scariest villians in the series awesome reaction guys.😊I can't wait for the next Mission impossible reaction my favourite.😋
This is my personal favorite Mission impossible its such a change from 2 and the villian the team everything in this movie was amazing im so glad you reacted to it and the next 3 are also increidible
I'm from Rome and happen to live very close to the vatican wall DHL scene they shot. Happens every, damn, day. And just like you've seen it. Mark Hamill once said "I'd do the trench run 3 more times but no way I'm driving in Rome." I know Mark, I know... Yeah I'm not super sure about the inside walls of the Vatican City itself, but looks pretty accurate to me. The Vatican museum is the real thing for sure. The only mistake is the line to enter that museum coils 3 times around the entire walls! They certainly had restrictions to some degree, but... money.
After MI:2 wasn’t that well received, this is the movie that set the tone for the series moving forward. The franchise just get better with each movie from this one on.
Rather tall guy here - I fit thru normal doorways, but tall enough for people to double-take and say "you're tall!": low blood pressure, even since childhood. Used to black out after standing up. Which doesn't happen often any more. Only passed out while going up the stairs once - survived.
I was a child(maybe 12-13) when I saw this movie and I didn't know anything about Tom cruise or mission Impossible franchise and this was the coolest and best movie I ever saw, although later movies are a lot more refined this movie remains my favourite.
I have difficulties to watch it because of the shaky cam but it is a cool one… Btw, in the airport scene Cruise kinda looks like his character in Oliver’s Stone “Born on a 4th of July “
Rugpulls... Try "Law Abiding Citizen" starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler or "The Game" starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn! Love the Mission Impossible series! Great reaction!
Love this Impossible Mission. Another great movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman (and Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and others) is Charlie Wilson's War (2007). Cheers!
[Pope watching MI3] "What the hell, guys?! On here it took a team of spies and advanced technology. Last week some guy was in my bathroom because he got lost on tour! When did the security budget get cut?"
This is problably the best JJ Abrahams movie. Believe or not, but the next movie in the series was even more tense. and have a amazing ending sequence. Also directed by Brad Bird, from the incredibles.
