On the actual Film set of the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning train crash stunt, filmed in Derbyshire England. A detailed look at the steam train, the film set and the surrounding area with my own exclusive footage of the train crash. This is a timeline of events that led up to the big day when they drove the replica full-size steam train off a 200ft cliff for the final crash scene in Tom Crusie's latest blockbuster film. The locomotive flies through the air in spectacular style before crashing into the quarry below. The train was built specifically for the film & resembles a BR Britannia and has been named Le General Rive-Reine which relates to the 1964 war film 'The Train'.

I saw the finished movie last night and generally thought it was good as a vehicle for some great chase scenes, but not much else. This train crash had me baffled. They made such a big deal about building a replica steam locomotive, then making it do a half-gainer into a quarry for the filming. I get that they had to do CGI for the bridge it was on as they used scaffold for that in real life. But they used so much CGI for everything else, I wouldn't consider it a practical effect at all. Why not CGI the whole thing? I now think they did this only to get buzz going before the release

The MI mockup loco had three pairs of driving wheels, plus six smaller pairs of wheels.

I don’t understand why they didn’t just create a proper computer graphics model. The way it’s currently done lacks some realism. For example the locomotive power train doesn’t speed up as the locomotive falls after loosing track contact. In fact the locomotive does just the opposite. That’s obviously because the actual power was on the tender. This alone hurts my brain and makes the footage unrealistic. With cgi this and other problems could be properly addressed
@johnfinneyphotograph
@johnfinneyphotograph Год назад
I know exactly what you mean. But I think the trailer version isn't the final edit. They often rush a version out just for a trailer. Everybody who knows something about steam-locos knows, that there will be steam under great pressure in the loco! The little splash it gets, when it crashed down in the puddle, is not realistic in ans wise! Think about the boiler explosion in the former GDR about 1969! the whole boiler started and smashed onto the tracks over 199 meters away and got a cold-welding with them! Both men of the loco-personell were killed but, a wonder, nobody else, because the straight way the boiler flew and no people at the platforms beside the crashing site!

So sad, they had to destroy a perfectly good steam locomotive those types of locomotives even though they are powered by steam, they are perfect for hauling freight and passengers

This was a prop. Purpose made for the film. It had a diesel engine in the tender for propulsion and smoke machines in the boiler.

I don't get the point of this. They have to CGI EVERYTHING in, including the bridge, the canyon, and the surrounding countryside....why not just CGI the crashing locomotive also?
@johnfinneyphotograph

You only get true physics from real practical stunts. Because CGI is improving all the time. This is the only way to make it future proof. Actually do the stunt, then use them physics.

Can someone tell me if they actually destroyed a preserved 7MT to make this??
@johnfinneyphotograph
@johnfinneyphotograph 2 года назад
They made a replica just for the film. No old trains were destroyed only a replica.
@johnfinneyphotograph
@johnfinneyphotograph 2 года назад
@Mike Devos Thanks Mike. I think the weathering was quite real as they used this very train for filming in Norway, infact this replica train has been moved about quite a lot for filming. They also used it in North Yorkshire for filming too. The train was made about 2 years before this final stunt. If you watch the trailer, they have removed the rust in prost production for the final cut.

I don't think that Americans were dare do that.. both Brits are fine. 70000 came back into steam in May 2022 and 70013 is due to steam in late 2023/early 2024.

Just saw the film in theatres and I thought it was cgi, just looked so fake. What was even that about.
@l3p3

You could tell it is fake by the wheels not spinning very fast after loosing track contact. There would be high pressure on them...

Not true, the wheels would only spin faster after loosing track if the engineer was accelerating before the incident. If he would be neutral or even breaking then they would not spin faster at all.

Because that's what you do in professional film-making. Helicopters are more stable platforms and they carry WAY more weight than any drone. You can't mount the larger camera rigs on drones.

did they really kill a modified british rail standard 8F 'Britannia' locomotive for a mission impossible film? what a waste of heritage kind of makes me angry if it was modified and not a mock up however if it was a mockup then it doesnt matter other than i hope they cleaned that wreck up before the peak district karens find out there countryside got wrecked lol.
