The lyrics are filled with inside jokes and references that most people probably won't get. Here's some help! Lyrics Explanation: "Both your boys still serving out in the mission of Kobe" - As missionaries we served in a section of Japan known as the "Kobe Japan Mission" which includes much of the Kansai and Chugoku regions and the island of Shikoku. "Benjamin, now that's your name. I don't even know how to call you that, man, it's such a shame." - All missionaries refer to each other by the title "Elder" followed by their last names, and most do not know each other's first names. At the time, "Elder Anderson" (Benjamin) had already completed his mission and back in America; thus, he was no longer "Elder." So it was kinda weird for us to try calling him Benjamin (it still is). "Trying to be like you and flip a cheese toast like the good old days." - Elder Anderson was well known for his infamous "cheese toast", which was basically toast with cheese and egg. It's more amazing than it sounds. "Your trainee recently became a Tech Elder" - Trainee: In the mission, brand new missionaries are referred to as "trainees", and I was Elder Anderson's trainee, and he was my trainer. It is often described as a father-son-like relationship. - Tech Elder: missionaries in our mission had tablets to aid in their missionary work. For things varying from tech support to simply helping missionaries maximize their usage of the technology, we had "Tech Missionaries". Elder Anderson became the leading "Tech Elder" of the mission, and eventually I also became a Tech Elder, in a way "following in my father's footsteps." "...are you famous from all that climbing?" - Elder Anderson is an incredible rock climber and mountain climber. "Did you hear that 'the Illest' is still surviving?" - In Japan, all missionaries have bicycles for transportation. I purchased a bicycle that literally had written on the side, "Illest". What a sick bike. (We also gave it the Japanese name "Saibyōsha" (最病車) meaning "most-sick-vehicle.") For non-native English speakers, "sick" and "ill" in this context is a good thing, basically meaning "cool." "I bet you wished you Bruced for all of that granola." - Bruce (v.) - "to Bruce" is the act of a foreigner (likely American) acquiring "yellow fever" (infatuation with Asian women) and marrying one, likely to end up living in Japan the rest of his days. "Brucing" was a common joke among missionaries, and something that Elder Anderson swore he would never do. - Granola: during the video, Elder Dewey holds up a bag of "Furugura" or "Fruit Granola". Elder Anderson and I loved this granola and ate it as cereal often. One time, we were joking about how good they are, and I said, "I'd Bruce for these." (in reference to another story I won't share). Ever since, we started calling the granola "Brucers". "You could have used the autographed 'Dahla Billz' that he got ya." - One of my nicknames is "Dahla Billz", a pun on my last name, Dahl. Elder Anderson and I were companions (missionaries are always in pairs and call each other companions) during Halloween. For a Church Halloween Party, I dressed up as "Dahla Billz" by attaching hundreds of fake bills across my body. At the end of the party, I autographed dozens of them and handed them out. The remaining bills I kept, and during the video Elder Dewey holds them up to the camera. "You're probably making millions from your concerts, aren't ya, playing the piano like a monster." - Elder Anderson composes and performs music on the piano. Dude's got skills.
