A nasty injury, that leg is moving forward with a lot of force when it's suddenly stopped by the defender's body. His poor ligaments.

That punter is a stud to get that kick off so quickly. Likely saved the game. Hope he's OK.

As someone who's had a brutal leg break being hit as a kicker this would be my worst nightmare.

At the game, sitting close to the end zone where this happened, this is the most Mizzou thing that could have happened, good play by the Kentucky punter.

Usually in that situation, I would have the punter bat the ball out of the endzone for a safety, but in this case, that would’ve potentially allowed Missouri to win with only a field goal instead of having to score a touchdown. Probably the worst situation to find yourself in as a punter.

In terms of the rules, it's a cut and dry Roughing The Kicker call. The ball was snapped, the punter successfully kicked the ball forward behind the line, the kick was not deflected, and then the kicker was (clearly) roughed a split second after the kick. But in fairness to the Missouri player, he didn't think there was any way in hell that kicker would get the ball and successfully kick the ball forward before tackling him, and if he hadn't, it would have been a legal tackle. Just a GREAT play by the kicker to chase down, secure, and kick the ball before anyone got to him. I hope his injury isn't too serious.

Honestly, the kicker has some balls to go ahead and kick while the player was flying at him but he knew the rules and it would be roughing the kicker. Its almost like when a basketball player sees someone flying at them but takes a jumper to draw a foul.

It's the proper call. Goodfellow was set up to punt and did punt. Obvious roughing. I hope he's OK, but that looked bad.

Add this one to the list. Not just this "roughing the kicker" but also the Chris Rodriguez getting a first down after losing 2 yards (drive which led to points). I swear I don't know why I do it to myself every week. It's literally like the football gods just love punishing Mizzou.

That penalty is not a bad call, it’s definitely more of an unfortunate situation for Missouri since the punter just barely got it off right before getting blown up by the defender.

My team did a rugby punt and took a couple extra steps and got clobbered as he was kicking. They said he was out of the box so he isn't a kicker anymore. How is this any different?

That was one of the most bizarre plays i ever seen . I think unfortunately it was the right call . By rule if it wasn’t tipped or blocked or touched by a Missouri player he has the right to kick the football. The player at that point thought he was just tackling the ball carrier. You can’t coach a situation like that . Hats off the punter he was committed to his job .

I feel so bad for the punter. Don’t know how bad that injury is, but I’d guess his season is over and being a 5th year senior that means his football career is likely over. He has to go out on his back writhing in pain while the crowd boos and chants “bullshit!” That sucks.

Seems that UK has had a lot of problems with long snapping this year. They've won two of three games in which they have had bad snaps. I'd say they have been fortunate.

The problem here is a rule that extends the tackle box indefinitely behind the line of scrimmage. TBH, the rule should define the tackle box as the line of scrimmage, the hash marks, and 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage. In a situation like this when the ball is clearly loose on the ground....play on at your own risk.

That punter had the guts to make the play and the fans shouted obscenities at him for their own player lacking awareness and potentially ending someone's career. Horrible.

I guarantee that this clip will be shown in hundreds of football film rooms across the country as a "teachable moment" of what the rule is in situations like this. Most players, like Missouri's #22, would have thought that the kicker was "fair game" to be tackled when the snap goes over his head. Apparently that's not the case. It is no different than if the kicker had caught the snap cleanly and is protected after he kicks the ball.

They just changed the rule this offseason, its called the Missouri-Kentucky Rule.

The fact that he even got the punt off in that short amount of time is insane, if he somehow isn't injured because of this play & out for the season, I am sure he'll actually get drafted in the First Round. Punters & Kickers are usually an afterthought in the Draft. But with quick reflexes like that, a lot of teams will look at him. Also, it's really weird thinking Kentucky is starting to become a football school now.

Idk, its a weird rule. If a punter is forever a punter inside the tackle box, and not an active runner, can't they just stand there with the ball the whole game acting like they are kicking and never get tackled? What's the actual rule for this?

I guess I did not know the rule either. I thought if you snapped the ball over the punters head its a live ball and a fumble. I am thinking thats what the Mizzou player thought by just tackling him.

I know most people would not agree but I think that if the punter in a high school or college game misses or drops the ball like that the play should be dead and the defending team takes over at the previous spot. It may remove some of the excitement from games but it will help prevent some serious injuries. It will also make the center watch what he is doing to prevent an overthrown ball. I think that kid did some good kicking at the Tennessee game. Hope he recovers soon.

Good call to a bad rule. Soon as he misses the snap, he needs to be fair game if he touches that ball. 2nd time I’ve seen this happen in 2022, both times changed the game.

Had he been outside the hash another yard or so it would have been a good hit as the punter gets a dedicated lane (I believe from tackle to tackle) where he cannot be touched while attempting a punt.

Michigan did something similar to the Rutgers punter (luckily no injury) but no flag was thrown

It was a good call, the right call. The defender should have known the rules. It's your fault for not knowing the rule and situation. What is point in changing the rule if the player isn't going to know the rules?

To the people saying because of this rule a QB about to get hit can just punt the ball and draw a roughing the punter penalty: 1. There's a penalty for roughing the passer too, remember? 2. If you've got enough time to punt the ball you've got enough time to throw it too. 3. I expect most QBs attempting to suddenly go from preparing a throw to attempting a punt are just going to fumble the ball.

It may have been a brutal hit, but I think he was trying to TACKLE the kicker because at that point, he just looks like a ball-carrier. It may be that it's still roughing under the rules, but if so, the rules ought to be changed. Roughing the kicker should only apply if it was fairly obvious the victim was probably about to kick.

Being a UK fan I understand losing games like this. Missouri played hard and was just unlucky. I think that rule is stupid and should be changed. If you center the ball over the head of the punter and it stays inside the box between the tackles and the punter runs back, picks it up, and kicks it I guess he still cant be roughed but it seems unfair

It looks like he tore it during the kick, the hit didn't have anything to do with it. His leg bends weirdly as he attempts to punt it away. Also unsure about the call, wouldn't it be a fumble the moment he missed the snap?
