I did indeed make a mistake on the Missed Approach out of Nantucket Island in our Bombardier Global Express, but all is well that ends well as we eventually made it into Nantucket on the second attempt. The weather was down to the minimums on this dreadful morning, so we had to put in some work. I hope you enjoy!

Forgetting the positive rate call on a miss is not uncommon, yet it is almost never forgotten on takeoff. Having spent most of my life in the airlines I’ve seen and done worse. As a side the missed approach level-off altitude of 1,500 feet is rather low, I was impressed that they never blew through it.

Hi! Nice to put a face(s) to the callsign. I was the approach controller you talked to most of the time. Pa31 is a navajo and the ones that fly in and out of ACK all the time keep that speed up just fine. I got you😊. Very cool video, like seeing behind the scenes.

The end result was you made the decision to give your self an opportunity to fly this approach again. I have flown enough to have gone thru several real missed approach. Some for heavy rain and thunderstorms and some for just plain old fog. Went thru a couple at DCA for a Delta flight in MD90. Fog was heavy in a very busy airport - it was basically zero feet and we missed at minimum. Worst was a rain storm into BWI and we had compressor stall because of rain ingestion. It was heavy rain! Bang bang and it was a go around. Little bit scary. I was way in back next to the right hand motor. It was loud. Very happy when we got on the ground.

I've been flying since 1981, got my instrument rating in 1985 and, in all the time since (granted that I've only averaged about 100 hours per year on my PPL) I've never had a missed approach and never been given a hold. Of course, I'm only referring to actual flying. I do recurrent training twice per year and fly tons of them in the sim.

There are a few criteria I believe for the "runway environment" Lighting is one of those.
@erikbjrnyolsen9694
@erikbjrnyolsen9694 Год назад
Approach lights alone are not enough to land, but allows you to continue down to no lower than 100 ft above the TDZE. To go below that you need to see the either the threshold, threshold markings, threshold lights, REIL, VASI (not PAPI), TDZ, TDZ markings, TDZ lights, runway, rwy markings or runway lights. In addition flight visibility can not be less than prescribed in the IAP being flown and the aircraft must continously be in a position from which descent to landing can be made using normal ROD and normal maneuvers. FAR 91.175. For Part 121 or 135 operators there are additional reqs. Hope that was clear)
@CorporatePilotLife

If you have the approach lights in sight, you can go down to 100 feet above the runway, but then have to see the actual runway.

The irony in this is that in a single-engine approach and go-around, the aircraft would have been able to transition into a safe climb with a little bit of a delay (compared to a normal approach). So you would have had to wait for positive rate of climb anyway, before retracting the gear 😁 I suspect that in the back of your mind, you were trying to economize on time and spontaneously re-set the navigation while the engines spooled up, descent was arrested and the climb started. On the other hand, I agree that sticking to the procedure is better, because it covers a wider variery of scenarios, for example single-engine go-around with a required minimum climb gradient around hills etc., where your attention may be inadvertendly bogged down too long if something unusual happens while working with the navigation re-set. So this is why it is a lesser risk to focus on the priorities as designed in the go-around procedure sequency - let's get the basic aerodynamics fixed before getting to the more advanced stuff (navigation).

Hi Shawn. Haven't seen you in a while. Glad you're doing well. As to the error, I caught that something was missing, but without the checklist in front of me, I didn't know what it was. In retrospect, it was odd for the PF to call for gear. I guess when you hit the TOGA, gear comes under "Aviate" and the A/P under "Navigate." May that be the biggest mistake any of us ever makes! Wow! Descent right down to minimums! "Well done, team," indeed! That GE looks slick! I like to imagine what rich Whales are drinking it up behind you. Given the destination, I figure some lobbyists or minor politicians. Have you seen the Scott Perdue video of the GE with a dual engine-out emergency? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sMdTn6BacL4.html

In addition to the missing positive rate call (and I'm being picky) you also missed the go around radio call which the PF ended up making slightly adding to his already high workload. GAs are stress inducing and always put pilots in a state of shock for a split second even if they were expected. Cool humility and learning experience. Thanks for being so transparent and sharing I always hate taking the 190 into ACK and MVY when the weathers doing island weather things.
