Welcome back to a rescue introduction video of new intakes here at my small mammal rescue I run. Sometimes we rescue those in desperate need of help, may have some bad or misinformed care or those who're about to become homeless due to no fault of their own. Today's story is about a young male Syrian who came from 10 gallon tank with no lid. We show you what they were kept in, what their personality is like while adding some educational information during our story. Thank you for watching.
Awareness for proper care needs to be shared. It can easily be accessible online, however google search results don't always show good care information which ends up misguiding people. While the owners simply "didn't care" about their hamsters and wanted to profit off of their suffering, not everyone who has bad care is a bad person. SO KEEP THIS IN MIND! They may just need guidance and understanding.

I live in the UK and Munchie has honestly educated me so much on hamster care. I have a Syrian boy (who I was told by Pets at Home was a girl, then I saw the big ol' bolls) and I wasn't given any information on hamster care at all, I was just informed about wet tail and that's it. I got my boy the biggest cage the store had (which was around 320sq inches I believe) and thought it was fine. I knew minimal information (I'd had hamsters as a child and thought my dumbass knew everything) and thought, stupidly, that the store surely wouldn't sell things inappropriate for hamsters, right? Wrong! Instead, after about a month, my boy started chewing on his cage bars. I went back to the store and asked if there was anything I could do to stop him as I was worried about his teeth, and they told me he was just filing his teeth down and recommended I put LEMON JUICE on the cage bars to stop him. LEMON JUICE? Of course once I got home, I googled hamster care and after seeing so many conflicting articles, one of Munchie's videos was recommended! I then got a 150 ltr storage box (698sq inches) turned it into a bin cage and now my lil boy is the happiest hammy. Munchie is a hammy life saver and I cannot thank her enough for all the education she's given me!

I can attest to the muscular strength of Syrian hamsters... in my family our best memory of "Biscuit" was expecting her to take a small nibble of a puffy Cheeto as a treat, then lifting her a few inches in the air because she chomped down on the whole thing and refused to let go. (Don't worry, we didn't give her the whole honkin' Cheeto in the end, but she did earn a slightly larger nibble as her snack). xD Also shout out to Munchie for having the bravery to set pet supplies on her pristine white bedsheets. I don't care if they were in a plastic bag, you can't trust those to stay unbroken. Ever.

A lot of people are clueless and even those that do their research don’t always look in the right places. I’ve learned the hard way that when I take in any pet, I need to already be informed from the get-go, because it takes time to be fully informed. I just took in a new pet rabbit, but unlike with my previous pet where I relied on the store employees for info, I had done 1-2 years of research on how to care for rabbits. I’m also more involved and learning as I care for her. That should go for caring for any pet, especially hamsters.

I put my Syrian in a 10 gallon for the 15 minutes it took me to finish her den refresh during her monthly 40g clean. She was not amused. I believe she has a similar background to Aspen. She is a very private and independant hammy that prefers her love at a distance. She is the most subterranean hamster I have ever rescued, creating the most expansive and complex burrows. She even keeps her underground bathroom fresh by churning over the substrate in it and pushing the soiled stuff to the surface. I of course spot clean and check on her underground empire to make sure I am not missing anything.

I do like how u repeat stuff through different videos. It doesn't matter so much with me getting a hamster, but that I'm going to start a rescue. Munchie, I've been thinking about your current unplanned litter rescues and also how many un-socialised or poorly-socialised rescues you've been having recently. if you have time I think it would be really useful and great if you were able to create some videos on how you should approach handling and desensitising a young or newly adopted hamster? Perhaps also some videos on enrichment ideas both bought and DIY and what behaviours they're useful for. I really feel, if you can fit this in with everything else, this would be a really useful addition to your current content.

On rspca a lot of the care you see they provide in the pictures of the hamsters is dangerous and bad! I was shocked to see some of the hamsters had cotton bedding 😱 and they were wanting to rehome a group of 5 dwarf hamsters as they said they want to keep them together? I really hope they get separated. And in the United Kingdom were I’m from everywhere that has hamster products have all the bad things and it took me forever to find a large bin cage I was looking for months. And I just picked up some care leaflets from pets at home ( Incase I do a reaction video) and all it has practically no guidance on what you should do. My mum wasn’t happy with them and said she wants to stick posters with the right care all around the shop😂

I feed my hamsters live insects whenever I think they deserve it. They are all so tame and calm, but whenever they see a live insect they go full tiger mode and hunt like crazy. I don't hand feed the insects anymore. I let them go in the enclosure, and they have their fun hunting them (of course if they start to escape, hide or burrow, I will check it) . It should be viewed as a necessity. This is natural behaviour. And nothing is more fun and rewarding than seeing our pets to express their nature

I should've done my research first I know my mistake but come to find you can't so now I'm stuck with two Syrians in two huge tote cages and a lot of money spent on them XD but Im so happy for pages like this because pet places really don't put out good information they're just about the profit. I have always heard that it's dangerous to give hamsters live mealworms because they have a very strong mandible and if the hamster happens to pouch it while it's still alive it can bite the inside of their cheek pouches. was told it's better to smash the heads of the mealworms before you give them to the ham.
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 4 года назад
That's why i make sure to provide one meal worm at a time and don't allow them to leave without eating it or just hold my tweezers so they. I didn't go into details explaining this but people can cut off their heads or make sure to feed it to them head first. However I've done a bit of digging/research and people have said hamsters would kill the bug first before pouching it or eating it first. In my experience they've just eaten the creature whole without ever pouching. I'm actually interested to know what the hamster clubs have to say about this or my vets.

Hammy Cats69 is a UK hamster youtuber and she does food reviews and hamster hauls as well as other videos.

I don't understand why people say hamsters are so much work. Feed them, clean their home, say hi to them. How is all that hard.

Hi Munchie and everyone! I know Munchie probably won’t see this, but I have a question and I’m really hoping someone can answer it! I’m currently feeding my hamster the Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition. I’ve seen Munchie's review on the basic food from Wild Harvest, but I can’t find any reviews on the advanced nutrition. I know the main concerns, and I want to point out that I looked at the ingredients. I didn’t find any sugar, added dyes, and corn was pretty low on the list. It also has 18% protein. I know the views on Wild Harvest is bad, but the advanced nutrition seems like a genuinely good food mix. So my question is: Is Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition a bad food mix? If it is bad, why is it?

Hi Munchie. Is it ok to just give a life mealworm and cricket without crushing the head first (mealworm)? I tried dried mealworm but my boy did not ate it.

I'm curious: I haven't heard any bad things about flying saucers in the UK, but I've also never seen any under 10 inches wide. I paused the video to look for the reason why they're discouraged in the UK, but I couldn't find any welfare issues.

UK hamster groups have discouraged the use of them. That's why i mentioned this. I've been personally told this by a few admins but i also have been told by breeders that this information is incorrect and that they're pushing their own advice out on people in the groups when there is no proof that large saucers are a problem if big enough for their backs to run straight on it. So i decided to just mention it in the video encase anyone from the UK discourages it. I can't find any welfare issues either.

Hi Munchy, I feel like I should let you know that you are seriously overestimating hamster care in the UK. Almost all commercially available cages are below the recommended minimum (even the US minimum). Flying saucers are also widely sold.

Look at his precious little face. Aspen is adorable! I always wonder how you can misgender small rodents. Some of my rat boys are from accidental litters and I have no idea how you can overlook those comfy little cushions the guys have.

My hamster peaches went missin a week ago out of her house and she was my first hamster ever(dont worry I did all my research before I got her) and like I left her with my mom and told her guide lines and then she was gone when I go home, but I realized that I'm bot gonna get her back, and I have to move on , so I got another one and his names Is murphy and the pet store ( I don't sopport them but it was an emergency he was in bad care there) said he was aggressive when they picked him up(hes a black white and brown speckled with a pink nose paw and ears and tail , names murphy btw) and I was like , prolly cuz yall dont care if him. So i said "I'll give him a chance) and I've had him for 2 days but I've left him alone for now bc they need some time to adjust

I just posted this. Her YT counterparts recommend that you cut their heads off due to biting possibilities due to pouching.

Some people recommend that so that the hamster doesn't get bit by them. But this is an insect we're talking about that is found naturally in the wild. I think hamsters are smart enough to bite head off first. Which is typically what I see when I feed them live.
