MISTAKES from my first business | How much is your time worth?

In 2016 I was working full time at an architecture firm but I wasn’t satisfied with my job. I wasn’t being challenged creatively, I wasn’t learning anything new and my career was stagnant. I needed to break out of that rut so I started a side hustle.
Link to my Patreon page: / belinda_carr
At the time, we were living in a studio apartment in downtown Carrollton, about 20 minutes north of Dallas. We were really close to an industrial area with lots of manufacturing plants and distribution centers. Wooden pallets were thrown out every day, piled high on the side of roads. Pallet wood furniture and signs were trending all over Instagram and Pinterest so we decided to capitalize on that style and momentum.
We started a new company called Pallet Snobs with the intention of giving unused and discarded pallets new life by transforming them into well-designed, minimalist, high quality pieces of art and furniture. Reusability, recycling and minimizing waste were the core values driving the company. Those are actual lines from our mission statement. I broke down the pallets and cleaned up the wood planks with a table saw, jointer and planer. After gluing the boards together, I made custom artwork, signs, clocks, step stools, and even furniture.
But there were so many challenges that I didn’t foresee, that made me close up shop in 7 months. Pallet Snobs was supposed to reject the overdone “faux-rustic” look but that style was popular, it made money. Minimalist designs weren’t in demand, so I wasn’t creating what I really wanted to. The entire process was also exhausting and labor intensive. We couldn’t compete with the price of mass produced goods that looked very similar to what I was creating. Most importantly, Pallet Snobs was very time consuming. In the beginning, I thought I would make a profit since the materials were free. But after a while, I realized that I was spending an average of 6 hours hunting down a pallet, breaking it down, cleaning it up and painting it to make a $25 sign. When I realized the value of my time, and put a dollar amount to it, I saw how flawed the business plan was.
“How much is your time worth?”
That is the most important lesson I learnt from running my first business. I learnt not to cheapen my worth and my value. I learnt to delegate the mundane tasks that eat up my valuable time. I learnt to focus on what I am truly good at, what sets me apart and spend my time honing those skills. With my Pallet Snobs business, I should have outsourced the breaking down of pallets and cleaning up the wood, and instead focused on design and marketing.
We often talk about the value of time when it comes to relationships. You need to put time into your marriage to make it work. Hold on to your loved ones because you don’t know how much time you have left with them. The same concept must be applied to business and personal decisions like building a house. You could spend 2 years or more building it yourself if the experience is invaluable to you. Or if your time and money can be put to better use invested elsewhere, it’s better to hand it off to experts and find the quickest way to build it. The second decision might appear to cost more, but if you consider the value of your time, it’s probably cheaper.
How much is your time worth? This concept now drives all my business decisions. I weigh the amount of time spent to earn money versus the amount of money earned during the time while enjoying, learning from and appreciating the experience, obviously.

Several years ago, my cousin had me retrieve valuable drawings from his crashed hard drive (he was a newly qualified architect doing some small jobs from home) - I wasn't going to charge him, and told him "It's only time" - He got really serious and told me very firmly "Your time is worth money. If YOU don't value your time, nobody else will" - and to make his point, he paid me more than double what I would have charged him anyway. I always remember that

Belinda You learned more from running your small business than most learn in a college business management class. Your labor and time was the cost of your business education. An old saying here is" College is not the only place you pay to learn." Also people need to really look at the true value of what you try to recycle. Pallets are made form the cheapest and lowest grade of lumber possible. So anything you tried to build with the reclaimed wood starts out with an inferior quality material. With a low quality product your never going to be able to create much value with the end product. I enjoy your channel. Common sense in not commonly found anymore. Your doing a good job.

actually it depends on the pallet. we have many that are made of very good wood. now its not the most common and you wont get oak pallets. but not all are trash wood. now the biggeat issue isnt wood quality but treatment. many of the pallets are treated in suck a way that they are toxic. VERY toxic.

I started a similar company in 1992 we dumpster dived at a number of apartment construction sights. In 2 years we built 200 dog houses 150 utility buildings and 30 playhouse. The finished products were beautiful. We didn’t charge enough money and we didn’t advertise in the right markets. It made me change my thinking from repurposed to onpurposed. Time is THE most important thing. You only have so much of it & you never know when you'll run out of it. I say it constantly to the people I work with. One of the five biggest mistakes people make when starting a business or contracting is they underbid the jobs. If you aren't losing nearly 1/2 of your bids to being too expensive, then you aren't charging enough. Also, you can't compete against outfits that run sweatshops or pay their workforce slave wages.

Trading collectible cards is where I learned this. I started making $50 a day trading cards and I was like. Wow I’m making money. Then I noticed I spent 8 hours doing those trades. That’s $6.25 hr. So I sold the whole collection for $2000 and moved on because my time was worth more than that. It’s great to have a hobby that brings in some money. It’s definitely better than a hobby that makes you poor. But if you start doing it just for the money and it is no longer a fun hobby. Make sure it is a good use of your time.

@@sparksmcgee6641 A smart employer would teach and reinforce "work smart, not hard." Their employees can get more done in less time, without tiring as fast or risking workman's comp issues when the work is heavy or intense. When there are 10 to 20 guys working on various parts of a job that needs to be done asap it adds up. Belinda uses a tool that I use often, a cost benefit analysis. Sometimes it is better to just get it done with manual labor and other times it is better to work smarter and bring in bigger or better tools or machines.
@sparksmcgee6641
@sparksmcgee6641 3 года назад
@@CGT80 everythin the world looks like a nail when you only have a hammer. I hate that phrase because everyone automatically thinks working smarter mean not doing physical work. Often just getting it done brute force is the smart way. My saftey and workmans comp record are pristine. Out of shape people destroy their body sitting in chairs all day, fit people that take the stairs before sitting in the chair all day are more productive and have lower workmans comp claims.
@CGT80
@CGT80 3 года назад
@@sparksmcgee6641 Yes, I agree that people tend to see in black and white or one solution fits all. The construction work I do is physical and unfortunately I have learned the hard way that not everyone has the same body or the body they had years ago. Between arthritis and fibromyalgia and other wear and tear from 25 years of work, I don't have any days without pain and have to use my brain to protect my body. The guys who work with me knew I had to be careful because of my neck and back issues but had no idea how much pain I am in each day until I mentioned it. I would delegate tasks to people based on their strengths. Some were good at heavy lifting, others followed through better, I focused on the lighter work and was the only guy other than my Superintendent brother who knew the entire job and had all the plans from the day we did the job walk. The other guys didn't usually think about the big picture and the other contractors and groups involved. My brother was more about brute force and using labor and didn't care about the guys. I prefer to work smarter when practical, but realize not every task is a nail.

Thank you for this well-constructed essay on how you learned to use your time more wisely. As the old saw (pun intended) has it, "Time is money". But actually, time is just time. As you said, it's fine to build your own house if the experience is invaluable to you. They key is to discern what is of value to oneself. I work both with my head (as a translator/interpreter) and with my hands (as a carpenter/woodworker). To me, the latter work is more gratifying, even though the former pays better per unit of time. Also, I think the problem with your pallet wood business is that pallet wood is of generally poor quality and, as you've explained elsewhere, it contains harmful materials, including traces of the toxic materials it was used to transport. And your tools get ruined by that one little nail you neglected to remove. It's just not a winning formula. In one's work life, I think the best combination is the ability to use both head and hands, selling both ideas and things.

Great video, I hope more people find it. I came to a similar conclusion, I am paid enough at work that anything I do on the side is either for fun, to learn/help, or to save money knowing full well the return-on-my-time is much lower than at work. It's actually not easy to make money *efficiently*. An architect friend told me as I was whining about how expensive building a house with the current mediocre processes and technologies is (and saying I'd want to do some work myself) "focus on what you are good at and make -more- money there, and let us build a better house". He was right. Now everyone has different skills/knowledge but realizing where your true value lies is key to making conscious (and good) decisions.

I learned that most people can't afford to pay me even a minimum wage let alone a living wage for my time so I do some aspects myself & send the fiber off to be spun up by mini mills so I can then spend time weaving.

Exactly my thoughts. I really love art and crafts and do a lot in that area. But I always limited it to things I do for myself or as presents for friends, exactly because you can't ask the price you should be asking if you'd calculate your time into the equation. Hi belinda. I also live in Dallas and have enjoyed the makerspace in Carrollton. Like you, I have experienced the corporate world as an engineer for 40 years, but always had a side hustle of rehabbing houses. Now I rehab only mobile homes as they protect my time and risk as you have pointed out. Don't feel bad about a failed business plan. Most of them don't work out, but when you find one that does, it usually overwhelms all the failures. You can always salvage some asset or knowledge from the failures, as you have found out. You learned python to automate your processes. I learned long ago to automate all my processes using visual basic 6, which in my opinion has been the best programming language ever. I would recommend a book entitled the four hour work week to you which was written by a technical person like you and me. You will love it!

Belinda uses a cost benefit analysis. It is something I use often and it applies to many aspects of life and it is taught in cognitive behavior therapy. CBT teaches people to prioritize and realistically consider aspects of their lift. It teaches them to put their needs first and to evaluate the choices they have in relationships, personal goals, careers, anything. Looking back at a task or experience you can also consider if it was worthwhile, as hard or as easy as you expected, how you might do it differently. This was a great video as always. I probably should have studied engineering in school but didn't realize at the time that I am a not only a builder but also a problem solver and engineer in some aspects.

another irony is that people use youtube to make a business because they "are tired of making money for others". you do realize you are still "working" for a company here on youtube. youtube provide channels with the storage and serving of their videos in exchange for the ads. it costs money to stream videos and the more who watch, the more it costs. so youtube is making money even when the channel isnt. guess whos making more? the channels wouldnt need paetron or paypal or other income other than youtube revenue if they were making more than youtube.

there's also a similar but different thing to think about, like getting items used for getting better at something, for example, if you have a keyboard (piano), and it's a very cheap one, it's good for practicing the beginning part on it, but when you get better, should you wait until there's a good deal or a better product that you want, and possibly get something very good for your money, or should you buy something now, that might not be the best, but is miles better than what you have now so that you can acquire better techniques and experiences. sometimes getting an item now and having it on downpay might be more beneficial than wasting your time waiting on something better, but it's a really hard choice depending on the situation and need.

My first business was a small bodega which i learn that my business were supporting Single Use Polluter, the culture of Single Use Waste. Which is sad. I wanted to build a bulk/zerowaste shop/refill shop but dont have enough money to start yet and it needs to be my second income. Simply because people in my town is not yet accustom to bulk/refill buying. My dream is to fully operate a zerowaste shop as my main income while doing my usual regular plastic cleanup in rivers in my town.

I never heard of any place that just throws away pallets. That stuff is expensive and even if they don't need it they then sell them, like even bad condition ones are still wood that can be reused or just burned.

Spot on , you are the closest replica/image/reflection of my way of thinking. I gave the building house task to the experts and spent my time on honing my Python programming skills at my job. Though I spent 15% more ( I might have saved building by my own). I got it back more than that by good hike in the new job.

Great vid A lot of people would find this a foreign concept. People have been trained to devalue their time. Minds bound to minimum wage. it has a massive effect on how people live their lives

Having spent more time in this life than you what I think i have learned is appreciation and doing what pleases you rather than putting that off to some future time. The whole Covid experience has forced millions to reevaluate what they do (or can do) and we know as a species we need to find less consumptive solutions. Time as a species is different to the individual and I guess like most things we only know value when we loose something. Questions might just be more fun than answers!

I do different service work. One of my first lessons was to say no to friends, because they always expected me to do it very cheap for them. I still do it for some few friends because they are kind of handicapped/injured so i know they can not do it them self. And of course i have to do it a little cheaper for them. But then they also know that i can not prioritise them like ordinary customers, so i can only work for them when i have no other jobs that must be done. Also i have learned that if not at least 2 of 10 customers say no because they think it is to expensive, then i am to cheap.

“...we moved...” please tell me that was you and your parents and you are not “involved” and are single. UNLIKELY OF COURSE. Love your videos as you are straight to point in a clear and concise manner. This one is older that the ones I was introduced to but same style. Keep up the good work.

I'll be sending this to my daughter for her to absorb (hopefully)... My times value vs getting it done is often the 1st. or 2nd. question. Thanks !! Best of luck in the future...

A few business lessons; Things usually cost more and take longer to get done than you think. The second version of any prototype is normaly better and was made faster. Some jobs are faster and better done alone than with an assistant.

@@BelindaCarr, sorry, couldn’t resist that throw away, but, what you say is 100 percent correct, it is also exactly why politicians are so out of touch with reality, they usually have no business experience, they mostly go from being failed lawyers, directly into public office and the people who are good in business, have no lust for politics.

This is something I’ve been learning these past few weeks. I decided that since I’m good at making things that I could sell my own designed products by taking on the production myself. 15 items in and I can tell it’s not sustainable. 🥴 I feel bad charging for the amount of time I spend on it but if I don’t then it’s not worth my time 😕

The thing with idea selling is... Ideas are actually worthless. Idea is the easy part. ACTUALLY being able to do something efficiently, thats where the value is.

This is something I have said so many times, for example you need some hardware to finish a job. Do you drive for an hour to go to the cheaper bulk supplier or drive for 5 minutes knowing you will spend more money for the product? So many people don't think of this important factor. There is the fuel cost, then your time and then the time you are not on the job.

Elegant, deeply intelligent work! Much appreciated. Q&A would be nice. ❔What's the process behind the research, writing, and the animation presentation of each video you make❔ I only ask coz, I've enjoyed the light approach you take in most topics and attention to scientific detail. I also commend the format and the unpretentious effort you make to show a balanced view. And think it must take a tonne of effort. I enjoy it so much. And hope the behind the scenes is enjoyable enough for you to innovate without losing too much of honesty and level of useful information you share in each video. ❔If you were to build the ideal family home, what materials would you use, and what other factors would you consider.❔
