Mistborn | Kelsier Character Study

Kelsier is a character that is wrapped in contradictions and mystery. I recently reread the first Mistborn book with the intention of making more in-depth videos on the setting and characters. This will be the first of those videos and today we’ll be taking a more in-depth look at one of the Cosmere’s most notorious characters - Kelsier.
Now Kelsier is a character whose arc is far from concluded, and with the events of Rhythm of War, he will likely see a lot more action in coming books. So while his arc is incomplete, I do still want to take a deeper look at this enigma of a character to try and gain a deeper understanding of who he is and what his goals are...

Wait, wait, so Kelsier doesn’t really die in the first Mistborn?!?!? Is it like the Jasnah shocker????? Please please please I hope so! I literally cried for about five minutes when I read that face-off between the Lord Ruler & Kell

That is a complicated question. A full explanation is in Mistborn: A Secret History and Zahel mostly explains it to Kaladin in Rhythm Of War. I am very conflicted about his fate. Glad he isnt totally gone but he is very different now. I don't want him to be a villain if that is indeed where he is headed. The Lost Metal goes pretty deep into the Ghostbloods too.

Kelsier kind of reminds me of taravangian, both have high-minded goodly motives, but are willing to do horrible things to achieve them. Honestly I'd be upset if kelsier were being setup to become a pure villain. The best "villains" are those who have good reasons for doing what they do imo. Perhaps he has some desire to shatter all the remaining shards, to him the shards can all be seen as just bigger "lord rulers" in some ways. Or maybe the motivations of the original 16 vessels for shattering adolnasium will parallel Kelsier's own motives.

Nah, kel is all for Sazed and was all for Leras, his character moved past killing all nobles/rulers when he saved Elend.

Hey, great video though I have something I disagree. I don't think Kelsier is a dark individual. He does do terrible things and is very close to the shadows as a thief and as Mistborn. However, I am not sure he is a dark man. After all, Sazed calls him a good man and his friends admire him as an individual, not just as god. What I do think that is evil about him is his sense of moral superiority. That whatever he does is right. This can lead to pride and hypocrisy, attributes that Kelsier has for sure. This is also why he doesn't flinch when killing noblemen or trick people into his plans. In his eyes, he doesn't do anything wrong. Ofc that is the nature of evil, but it isn't necessary darkness.

This character study brings to my mind the title of an old Clint Eastwood film. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Because you've covered all 3 of those aspects about Kelsier. I love that you stick to facts and don't, what is it the kids say now? Fanboy out. Maybe they don't say that, Idk. lol Anyway, another great video. I am, as always, looking forward to your next.

I've had a Kelsier fanboy on Reddit try to tell me that you aren't a serial killer if you rob your victims as well. XD Just casually redefining words so that Kelsier won't be a serial killer.

Great video on one of my favorite cosmsre characters (Hoid and Dalinar are tied with him). Appreciate your acknowledgement of Keslier's virtues and vices as I see people usually fixate on one or the other. Personally something brandon said in an interview gave me a theory on kelsier. The people he picks to be part of his ghostblood crew are more like the one he had vs the lord ruler. To me this implies Kelsier is at least aware of his...issues. thus he essentially hires people out out be the grounding for him when he goes too far.

I know I wasn't actually saving the world or anything but I spent over 20 years of my life fighting for something that only offered madness in return. Retired Army with a lot of ptsd and dissolution. If only that taint could be cleansed too.

@@The_Natalist Probably not perfectly, Brandon isn't a psychologist, but he has said that Kelsier is a psychopath. I don't think Brandon fully understands the clinical definition of a psychopath, though Kelsier clearly does have egotistical traits, some degree of anti-social behavior, and limited empathy and remorse....so he definitely fits at least loosely. Kelsier does have moments though that I think would be hard for a true psychopath to have. He does have moments of empathy and remorse, though not all the time. He has put other people before himself at times, and I'm not sure a psychopath would have sacrificed himself the way Kelsier did.
