Hvac units are designed and built to be in the weather. Rain, heat, snow. So this won't subtract from it's over all service life. I do industrial, commercial and residential Hvac for 35 years and have been using water to cool the condenser of my unit for over 20 years and it works beautifully if done correctly. Super heat is typically only a concern in refrigeration. Sub cooling is mainly affected by your refrigerant charge, too much will flood the evaporator and slug liquid refrigerant, too little will starve it and not have the capacity to remove heat thru the evaporator. Adding water to your condenser is no different than the outside temp dropping. So if its 90 degrees outside your supply temp in the house will rise as the condenser can't cool the refrigerant any cooler than the outside temp will allow, it is a slave to the ambient air around it. But if you spray 70 degree water on it thus your supply temp will drop and now the condenser has the lower temp to reject more heat thus lowering your supply temp. Your Delta T (Supply temp and room temp differential) will improve and it will now remove more heat from your home. Your suction pressure, discharge pressure and hot gas will all change when water is added. It will bring it back to a more normal operating temp and pressure range thus work more efficiently. My system is a bit more control oriented than this method. The water is usually not needed until the ambient temp is above 85 to 90 degrees if it is sized, clean and installed correctly. My system has to have (3) things happen to be engaged. (1) Call for cooling... I use the Y2 signal from my unit's stat( Y is a 24 volt call for cooling from the thermostat and starts the compressor) to pass thru(2) an outdoor mechanical air sensor set to 90 degrees, it's set of contacts are normally open and close only when the outside temp reaches 90 degrees. After Y calls and the outdoor air sensor closes at 90 degrees it passes thru the last device, (3) a head pressure switch that measures condenser head pressure and temperature. It has to be above 250psi (R-22 Freon) to allow the voltage to hit a 24 volt water solenoid coil that opens and sends the water to the misting lines that spray the water on the coils. And if the water with the fan is able to drop the pressure below 175, it shuts off the mister until the pressure rises above 250 again to keep from over cooling in low ambient conditions. I also use a two stage thermostat that has the ability to control a system that has to compressors. My system only has one compressor but the stat doesn't know that. What it does know is on a call for cooling it will measure how much time it is taking to drop the temp in the house and if it doesn't start seeing a few tenths of a degree falling in an allotted amount of time it will then call for the second stage Y-2 in this case the 2nd stage is the beginning call for water. Hope this helps anyone considering using water with your Hvac system.

Hello RobVoyles... I'm right in the middle of installing my own version of a misting system which sounds pretty similaarr to your minus a couple of interesting components you added such as a temperature sensor. Would you mind sending me an email to dirk1965@hotmail.com with more detail of your setup along with parts you used? I have two a/c units which I'm setting up independently with flow controlled solenoid valves wired into each 24V stats. I didn't want to run on a single system and use water if one of the untis wasn't actually on. Thanks

You may want to raise your misters to direct more mist at the top of the condenser coil - since this is the hottest portion of refrigerant as this is where the compressor discharges to - may gain some efficiencies

You can also take an amp draw reading in real time with the mist on verses with it off. If it is not dropping your cost is not dropping either. Also consider the cost of water. For instance the house I'm in now the owner pays $350 a month.

Snake Oil. Nobody has ever posted any hard data that shows actual overall savings. I have seen a few people post NO savings, but added cost, when you figure the tiny amount of savings they did see, but that was offset by the cost of the system, cost of water, and cost of replacing the filters. If this was so great, you'd see these things everywhere. Manufacturers would produce compressors that had this already built in. Much better to just buy a higher SEER rated system and then you WILL see savings.

Not disagreeing with you about what people are posting but the science is clear that these do in fact work. There are several manufacturers of these systems some even being sold at Lowes now. The science of how they work is valid and actually some high performance HVAC systems do use this exact evaporation technique for enhancements. However, like you said when you add in the cost of some of these systems that are expensive and have cellular connectivity, you will probably never realize the savings. There is one that works without electricity and is just a one time cost which I think is probably a better buy than one needed an annual fee.

I purchased this product last year. I removed it before the end of summer. It was causing mineral deposits to form on the fins of my unit and to be honest I really did not see any real savings? I do live in Florida so the more humid the climate the less effective this product will be. This device never worked at all in collecting data. My biggest complaint is with the company itself! They are very difficult to get in touch with, support is almost ZERO! I had one of the engineers call me and make a promise that they did not deliver on. They never return my emails or any other attempts to contact them. I am telling you this is way too expensive for what it will return and it will shorten the life of your unit with rust and mineral deposits. Best advice update to a modern AC unit.

Good point David. I think I am going to try the Mist-n-Save next. Not as glamorous but less parts that can break.

How did you connect it to know when to turn on and off with the AC unit?Isn't there some type of electrical connection to the thermostat wire?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 6 лет назад
You don't. It senses the AC turning on using the magnetic field generated by the running AC unit or the noise.

What if your a/c is in the shady side of your house, solar won't work if there's no sun.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 6 лет назад
With these it would have been a problem. However, with the new units shipping this month they are powered by the air that your outside unit fan blows.

They are still kicking along but the weather is just reaching the point where they will start turning on again. I am not happy with the lack of development on the app. They have been promising to update it so you can see how much you are saving but that still hasn't happened.

How is it going so far? I have read a bunch of reviews on Amazon and they are killing this product. I would love to try it. Love your video, and will appreciate any updates.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
The product still works and I certainly feel like it is helping but I have no way to prove it. I don't have the water problems that many others have mentioned where it is causing buildup and such so I can't speak for that part. I think the idea is solid but their app sucks. They haven't updated the app since release and doesn't really do any of the major things they promised it would do like monitor usage and report savings. I would say to wait on the product at this point. They will either fix things and improve it or the company will go away. At the moment it seems they have stopped development.

Thanks!, I believe R&D is a " measure stick " or company heart beat before startup becomes obsolete. Until then, I will hold as you suggested. Back in June 2015 I reached out to them and got a reply back by email from Josh Teekell himself (owner and CEO) and he answered my questions quickly and straight forward. He referred to the app as working and even explained the savings reporting was working. This should not be a big deal to fix. I will reach out to them again and see where they are. I will report back any new news. Thanks again.

So, is there a follow up video to this one? Does this thing work in the south? I live in the Dallas area. :-)

I think it works but I can't tell you how much it works. They have quit development of the app for version 1 so it doesn't report the savings. Now we have to wait on version 2 if you want to know how much it is saving you. But I definitely think it is helping.

Hey, thank you for make the video, question what battery use and how it charge?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 6 лет назад
It has a built in battery and is charged by solar. The new units shipping this month are powered by a wind turbine that is spun by your AC fan.

Question: The tax credit is only if you own the unit or will you get it if you subscribe to the service (e.g: $99/month subscription versus $399 cost).
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
It is my understanding you only get it if you purchase it outright.
@curtieson
@curtieson 7 лет назад
My understanding also is that they do not offer the unit to purchase anymore, this is a service now and $99 a year, not a month. So for that $99 you are guaranteed to always have a working unit ("lifetime warranty") and it also covers the cellular service (since it uses cell not WiFi like this demo used).
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
They are still going to offer it outright without a subscription. However, if you want cell connectivity you will still have to pay $49 a year which includes a new filter annually too. And they are offering current customers a discount to upgrade. But right now it's just a kickstarter so some of those options might not be available but they will come back when it goes into production.
@Mary-nu9yw
@Mary-nu9yw 7 лет назад
The price difference you're seeing in your bill. Do you feel like it's significant enough for you to feel like it was a good purchase? Will you be taking them up on the offer to upgrade? Thanks for the video, by the way. We're purchasing a house soon so I've got all kinds of potential expenses and equations in my head.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
Anecdotally, yes, I feel like it has helped. Unfortunately last year was our first year in the house so it's really hard for me to compare but our electric bill is a good bit less this summer than last summer. I don't know about the upgrade yet. I can't justify spending that much money to get an upgraded model that does the same thing as my current but I may buy 1 just to review and see if it's worth it.

Does this mister turn off when the a/c shuts off?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
It sure does. It detects the AC unit running using sound and electromagnetic fields. It also doesn't mist unless the outside temperature is above a certain threshold.
@solexxx8588
@solexxx8588 4 года назад
That's just overkill. You have a 24 volt signal on the condenser when the thermostat calls for cooling. All you need is a 24 volt sprinkler valve, some plastic tubing and some mister heads.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 4 года назад
Not arguing with you there. There is also a version that opens and closes the valve just using the air flow from the condenser fan.

Ok its 8 months. Did you save any money?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
I think so but I can't prove it. We had just moved into the house before I did this so I didn't have a great baseline for our electric bill.
@deankoch7305
@deankoch7305 7 лет назад
Keep the tstat at a set temp for an hour watching the meter. Then turn mist box off and see if it speeds the meter. Simple.
@bjl1000
@bjl1000 7 лет назад
wouldn't the minerals in the water get deposited on the fins and over time make them less efficient? Rain water or distilled water would be okay but water with calcium, magnesium and sodium would clog up your fins over time. Just as it does my forced air humidifier.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
I don't think the question is rather or not it works. It absolutely does work. A single test of my unit would prove nothing and be anecdotal at best. The fact of the matter is that it is using scientifically proved principles which have been verified many times and definitely work. The question is rather or not the unit is worth the money based on the cost savings and that will be nearly impossible for me to prove. I think it will be but I doubt it will pay for itself in a single year here in the south. At this point, I honestly think the better value would be to buy the manual ones that aren't dependent on solar and cost less. I believe they are called Cool-n-Save. I will probably end up testing one of those out as well here shortly.
@deankoch7305
@deankoch7305 7 лет назад
Yes you can easily prove if it is saving you money. The amp draw will drop if the unit is costing you less money to run while the mister is on. That is not hard to prove or disprove. Amp it out at the disconnect so you are reading all the amperage the unit is using. It is actually a science in real life not theory. If you do not get a decrease in your amp draw you are not saving money. It will simply be something getting your coil and fan motor wet if there is no noticeable drop in current usage. That's simple logic. I have been in the HVAC/R business for 30 years and accidentally learned the trade. There are systems out there in commercial use that uses water to cool the refrigerant in the condenser coils. They are called waste water condensers/chiller towers. They use a chemical to avoid the calcium build up on the coils from the water also. I don't see any on that system. The commercial stuff also recycles the water for more efficient use of the water. So that may be another concern. That outdoor unit everyone has in their house was engineered to cool the refrigerant enough to work properly as designed. They didn't leave out the mister because they wanted to screw the world over. They didn't put it on because it is not necessary. They have designed the fan and blade to move enough air over the coil to keep your unit working for years and years. Adding the water will cause premature rusting, bearing failure in the fan motor, electrical shorts potentially and calcium deposits on the coil that will hinder the cooling process of the refrigerant inside the coil. You would be better off putting the unit in the shade and keep it clean.

yeah sure it works. But their market scam is a joke. 99.00 a year ? Its some hose that mist water in front of your unit. They enable wifi controls which is a joke as well. Wifi to control a water valve ? Come on. Its a low tech device that they make appear is High tech. Scam city people. You could build a simple misting device for a few bucks. Control by a flap switch that is activated by the air coming out of the top of the unit.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 7 лет назад
It's only $99 a year if you go with the subscription model. You can buy it outright as well and you don't have to pay a subscription. And if you buy it outright, all you purchase is a new filter every year for $49 and you get a filter, an extended warranty and cell connection. But you aren't required to. It will still work without that, you just won't get the reporting. I am not saying this is for everyone. If you just want the one that mists your units using the fan, purchase a Cool-n-Save. They work great and they only have one moving part. But they also require you replacing a filter at a cost of $30. Depending on your water quality, you may have to buy one as often as every 3 months. I am not saying one is better than the other. I am a connected, geeky kind of guy and I like having the Mistbox because of the reporting and such. But the Cool-n-Save will work just as well for less. I am not trying to sell you on either. They both will save you money.
@MikeTrieu
@MikeTrieu 6 лет назад
What kind of reporting are you getting? I thought you said you weren't getting the savings report. What else matters in this kind of system?
