Dimitri Mitropoulos conducts the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra playing the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E♭ major, aka the Eroica symphony, on December 18th, 1948.
This was recorded live off the radio (KSTP) onto reel to reel by Reynolds Marchant. The recording was very quiet so there is some noise, that I was able to reduce a bit with Izotope’s RX toolset. Other than the noise the quality is very good - as I’ve mentioned in previous videos I have evidence that Reynolds had a direct line to the radio station, and/or was able to record it at the actual radio station.
Technical info:
Unknown Scotch
7” Reel
15 IPS
Note on the box says “Brush Machine” - this is likely the Brush Soundmirror, probably the BK-401 model.

What a nice old recording. And yes the sound is good for this kind of tape and taperecorder from this time. I suppose it's a both side tape. Because sometimes we can listen some noises from the opposite. But no problem. Really great to discover it and many thanks. From France 🎉

In fact it was only one-sided! I suspect the tape might have been used before. Or - it had been in storage for some many decades some of the information from the tape wound up next to it ended up getting transferred somehow! Either way glad you enjoy and be sure to check out the entire performance here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_31g5AXIZe8.html

@@MarchantTapeArchive ok so it can be interesting to read this tape on a full track mono taperecorder as a Nagra. Just to compare the result. As you know some kind of machines don't play tapes with the same effect. But this Pionneer is a beautiful machine... Thanks for the answer and sorry for my english... I will discover all your collection with passion. Continue to post on RU-vid. It's great.

@@magnetikmans4247 your english is perfect! Thanks for listening and commenting :) Tape machines are extremely expensive now alas so I'm kind of stuck with my two machines (the Pioneer + a 4 track Teac X-1000). I tried a few times to buy a Revox PR99 but they are hard to get in the United States.

@@MarchantTapeArchive keep those recorders. They are perfect and seems as reVox. Believe me. But naturaly all peoples want to listen to the perfection but with old tapes it's impossible. They are just some beautiful archives and nothing else. We have to protect them and to considere as collection part. I collect them too and also 78rpm. It's the same. Peoples critic the sound but listen everyday mp3 format.... Lol...
