this is such a beautiful and emotional song, but it makes me relive my suicide attempt. it's scary how accurate it is. "honey, what'd you take? tell me what you took"; it's so similar to what my mother was saying when I came to her after regretting overdosing. "but if I gave up on being pretty I wouldn't know how to be alive"; at the time I was depressed and dealt with bulimia, I thought if I became skinny it would all be alright. yeah, hits way too close home.

my personal interpretation of the song is that the singer is processing years worth of trauma "honey what you took, what you take" and the anger and realization that you've been robbed of Years worth of life because of your traumatic experiences and how Angry it can be, but its to the point where you don't know what you are without your trauma. its also how trauma just might Impact someone as a whole (physically, mentally, emotionally) and i am projecting ! lol

I feel like this song is about her struggling with an eating disorder (specifically anorexia and bulimia). The lines where she talks about her dying is literal. Like as in she’s been starving herself and/or throwing up any food she digests for so long and so severely that its literally killing her. The line “But if I gave up on being pretty I wouldn’t know how to be alive” is her either realizing that shes been doing this for so long that if she stops she would have no clue what to do with herself ORRR her convincing herself to continue these actions, she tells herself that ‘if she stops being pretty she’d be nothing and she would no longer have any purpose, shes been doing this for so long that its all she can do now, shes gotten too used to it’.

I don't think anyone will actually read this comment or care but I just wanna talk about how this song genuinely is my favorite by mitski and it means a lot to me. TW: suicide This July I had attempted suicide by overdose and this song reminds me of what I went through during that time and how overdosing felt. The first lyrics remind me of how I felt before and then the lyrics "honey, what'd you take?" Remind me of going to my mom and telling her and being rushed to the hospital after being asked a billion times by a billion different people what I took. The part where it talks about wanting to move to a new city also relates to me since I live in Texas and hate it and all the people and want to leave. Most people would probably look back on times like that and it'd be triggering, but I think of it and I feel proud and I use this song as a reminder of how I survived it.

I always thought this song was about a drug addict. The lines “honey what you take, what you take. Honey look at me, tell me what you take what you took” always sounds like someone asking someone who’s overdosed what they took to help them. And the lines “I think the ground is pulling me down I think my life is losing momentum” could be the singer coming down from the high. The whole song seems to elude to the singer who uses drugs to forget life’s pains but overdoses or becomes addicted

Hey.. i hope your doing a lot more better and i understand how u feel.. Like how, none of my fucking issues would have started or even began if I was just pretty enough for em. If ppl just didn’t deem my worth as something insignificant because my face wasn’t to their liking.. but.. if you want a new life, than u have to make it. Even if your going to have to take that road by yourself, it’ll all be worth it.Because there’s always hope yknow.. even if it seems completely useless… So.. all u need to do.. is just try and keep on pushing forward.. and to not let other ppls insecurities affect you, try to not let those words get to you! the only person who can save you is you.. and I think your pretty. okay but this song is evidently about a drug overdose (whether its suicidal or just reckless partying i don't know) and her not giving two damn and the paramedics/a bystander listening to her symptoms/witnessing her reaction to the od asking her what she took so they can figure out what to do so she doesn't die.
