I've had my Delica LWB Royal Exceed 12.5 years. Had 72,000km when I bought it, and now is coming up around 250,000km. It's been an amazing vehicle. It has scraped a bit off road, but still highly capable. Unfortunately, it's nearing the time to move on.
I am riding a derica L400 long in Japan! I have bought three of the same cars so far and have been riding them for a total of 20 years. I also want to travel around the world with derica! I'll help you import! lol
I’ve had an L400 3L petrol Delica for 10 years. Did an LPG dual fuel conversion not long after I bought it, which paid for itself quite quickly. I’ve driven about 135,000km around the east side of Australia. Had so many awesome adventures in it. Best thing is that it will go most reasonable places off road. Worst thing is that the engine is buried under the dash, so for a simple spark plug replacement or for a timing belt you’re up for 6 hours of labor cost. Also recently my transmission started to die so that was about $5k in overhaul. Other than that though, my Delica is my baby. I’ve done too many mods to count and in my opinion looks like the most bad a$$ van in Australia. It has been a labor of love over the years but I have no regrets! ❣️🚐💨
@@OverlandWay - No I want to drive in Scotland, in the Middle of nowhere, hundrets of Kilometers on bad very small gravel and mud roads, that are nearly never used... There is no electric charger in the nowhere and the destination is to high without the possibility to charge. This world sucks more and more and live is making less sence!
cheers for the video, i had a space gear moon roof a few years ago, but she was full of rust and caused me no end of dramas so i sold it, but a month ago i just picked up a 2007 petrol D5, that im pimping out to turn into a dirt bike moving action van for muddy trails here in New Zealand. ;-)
Gday from Australia,i have stripped the seats out of my Jeep Wrangler&pretend its a Delica, I loved them from the Get-Go but went for macho looks 1st. Im sorry. My next 4wd will be a Delica ! The convenience of a dedicated camper van is a winning point. Travel Safe u2
Yeah, Delica is a very capable vehicle. It's a shame it's only available with the steering wheel on the right. But I still really like it. It was definitely a good choice. Hodně štěstí. :-)
If I ain't wrong I've seen them with the steering wheel on the left hand side in Portugal. In Paraguay, Chile and El Salvador they also convert! So there is a light at the end of the tunnel hehehe
I have a Mitsubishi Montero gen 2.5 1999 4M40 engine and manual gearbox with superselect 8 years. I have buy it with 150.000km and It still go like new with 302.000 km on the clock, so , take care always un your oil and coolant level and have much fun traveling around the world. Regards from Chile ✌
Not sure why your delica is using so much diesel. Probably the weight and tires? Our 1994 2.8 got us about 600 km with 55L on our aussie trip. We were only getting about 450 to 500km though when we first bought the car though because the wheels weren't aligned and we destroyed both our front tires!
Hi Phil! The main difference would be the roads. In Australia we could get 600 km out of a tank also, but roads aren't as straight and flat anywhere else hehehe We miss those roads! Cheers!
Here in Europe, at least in Portugal, there is this model with the name L400 SpaceGear 4x4 or just L400 4x4 for the older models like yours, both short whell base. Unfortunately only with the 2.5 turbo diesel engine. I love it.
André Gonçalves in Europe you also have the hyundai satellite/starex/H1/H200, the olds have the same 2.5td (4d56, 100hp, like mine) and after 2006/2007 it comes with the 2.5crdi (commonrail and 140hp)
You Europeans are lucky! It's a shame they stopped making them though.. If there was a brand new L400 Delica I would work hard to get Vanda a sister! Lol
My brother had a delica very spacious for a family inside and capable off road however his had a overheating problem he tried to fix a few times but ended up selling it in the end
Which version did he have? The first generation didnt have an intercooler so it often overheated. The one in this video is a 2nd gen with intercooler so is not supposed to have the heating problem.
We are very slow moving compared to others! I reckon we like staying and taking places in as much as we can. The beauty of van life is that driving costs more than staying... so we just stay at places! Lol Cheers!
i love my Delica. had it 12 years and its 24 years old. took me and my girlfriend through 10 countries. travelled 5,700 miles in 3 weeks. Didn't miss a beat
We feel yah! It's an awesome car! We feel so lucky Vanda popped in our lives lol! What an adventure that would have been! Have you got photos? We would love to see some! Have a great day!
It is hard for a Vehicle to be everything at once, the little Deli does pretty good at wearing so many hats. But, if you had a Merc Sprinter, you would have done a fuel pump or worse by now, costing you a fortune. Im surprised at the 13L/100k's, my 13 year old 2.5 tonne 4.2L Landcruiser gets 10.5L/100ks I think you have much to be happy about, a CRD has many potential problems
We absolutely love our Delica and have hardly anything to complain about, but if we had to elect anything that could be better, those would be our picks. The 4M41 engine would be a nice upgrade... more power, more torque and more efficiency. But it doesn't mean we are unhappy at all... we love our Vanda ! :) But one thing is a fact... we know the negatives of our van as we've had it for many years... but maybe the Sprinter or Iveco Daily have many more that we just don't know about I guess... Cheers
I believe that if the Japanese can make the same Delica you guys are driving for the North American Market in a taller and bigger version, the Japanese will have a dominance over the North American van Market. Antonio, the extreme 18 wheeler
Hey it’s actually more like a Mitsubishi Challenger or Mitsubishi Triton. The Mitsubishi Pajero is completely different as it does not even have a chassis. It has a unibody
Hi, my Delica 1995 has gone over the 300,,000 ks and still going strong. Can you or whoever tell me where do you got the roof rails ? Ive got the rack just need the rails .
Awesome guys, Perth is pissing down with rain today so your in a much better place 😁, what's your plans with Taco and quarantine issues along the way? Keep on Delicaring along
Hi Steve, we wouldn't mind a bit of rain and cooler weather here for a break lol! Traveling with Taco through the Americas is rather easy. Most places only require a vet certificate. When we take him to Australia or Europe it will be a bit more difficult... but we will see when we get there hehehe Cheers!
nice video and nice car setup ! I understand your choice and future wishes (to have some more space), but know that an overland vehicle is always too big to drive and mostly to small to live in once you stopped in a place with not so good weather. An overland vehicle is always a not so easy compromise. After 35 years of LandRover I now decided to build a Sprinter, the smallest version with Oberaigner heavy duty permanent 4x4 and diff locks. For me (I'm not tall) it's just OK, I can just stand up in it and sleep large wise in a fixed bed. Feel free to take a look at my videos. See you on the road !
Thanks for sharing your experience, mate! You are totally right! We say we would love to have something like a Sprinter, but the truth is we've been traveling in our Delica and know it's cons well.... the day we started traveling in something else we would also get to know the cons we don't think of while we don't have it! So, nothing is perfect and we love our van! Heheh Have a great day!
I've been driving my L300 for the past 28 years around Australia. Lots of improvements, now with Central Tyre Inflation. See my fun montage at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ei_hiEee5uk.html and tyre inflaters at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VZfWA597qC8.html
Just for you to know: a brand new Hilux loaded, with 32" tires and a roof tent won't give you more than 20 mpg. Totally stock maybe 25 or 27, but once you put a small lift and 32" tires the fuel goes down fast. I own a new L200, I'm happy with it but if you are happy with the Delica don't replace it just for fuel eficiency
We have raised our turbo boost a little to get better fuel numbers... but otherwise I reckon maintenance, tire pressure and they way you drive will do 95% of the job! Cheers
Hey Guys - I have just ordered a Japanese Import in the UK having seen your video! I want to find your shower... please can you let me know where I can find it?
You think you're economy is bad. I have the v6 and it's a shocker. I had to buy a new xv Subaru as my daily driver and only use the deli when travelling or camping etc.
I have a Pajero exceed 03 3.8L V6 Auto with 258000 and all I've ever replaced was the fuel pump(put a bigger one in) , all CV joints multiple times 🤣 the life of offroading, a timing belt, fan belt and I'm about to replace the spark plugs for the 2nd time. Sad they are discontinuing the Pajero tho because it's honestly the best 4x4 there is. I have max lift possible I can't remember if they did a body lift but I don't think you can on a Pajero(I could be wrong I paid for the suspension and didn't install it myself, took it to a shop early on) but the centre locking diff imo with traction control and stability control is the best there is, the amount of clearance you get underneath is more than someone with a nine inch full lift but there diff is still hanging out the back. The lowest point under my car is my tow ball. And with the ATC,ASC,4LLC the car will walk up anything without a slip, I go 4x4 with some Hilux and patrols and they are just gunning it to get up the hills wheels spinning and moving from side to side, and I just cruise up at like 10kmph like my tires are made of glue. I guess there's a reason they won Dakar 12times, got a Guinness World record and to this day no one has beaten that streak. If you want to be bored will 4x4 ing buy Pajero 😂
Hi, can you please, pretty please show us where you mounted your heat exchanger for the hot water? I would like to add this to my delica and it would be great to see a working setup. Thanks!!
Congrats on the video popping(well, by our standards). I definitely spent some time looking at delicas while on the road. Very cool, stout vans. Keep up the good work :)
I've had two long LWB and there awesome would love to know where you got the winch tray from if you can remember thanks in advance firefighter younger Northumberland England
you always seem to be parked on beaches or hard to reach places. Are you saying you would give these locations up for a bigger van or would you still try to reach them without 4wd?
I Like the Delica! A Lot! It's got a lot of character not like every other sprinter out there, and 4x4. Cool little overlander for sure! And for the price of purchase compared to a new more efficient desiel vehicle its gotta be a contender. At least for us Americans. I'm working on a 1994 4×4 desiel Suburban right now for some US adventuring, and have thought about getting into a 4x4 astro van. But if the Delica was available in the US I'd be hunting one down for sure! Hard to beat van vs suv comfort with 4x4 and a desiel engine.
Had the L300 4wd and L400 4wd before Toyota for reliability. I have a lifted 1998 3.0 Turbo manual 4wd LWB Hiace with 31's on wide rims now with 380,00km. Also had the 2.8 and 2.4 4wd Hiaces which are slow loaded up. Current Hiace has better handling and a slightly wider body and wheel track, nicer interior plastics and general quality, easier to work on too. Better fuel economy by a small margin, but not quite as capable off road due to no diff locks. Always felt like the L400 would tip over so you have to drive them slow, the Hiace is like a Subaru WRX in comparison, I can 4 wheel drift it on gravel roads and it does good power slides on soft sand and mud. 4m40 engines are notorious for head failure, amazed yours is still going strong, and that was how mine died at 272kms. L400 is half the Hiace's cost here in NZ. Nice video tho, teamwork!
I love the hiaces too... One day I might have one hehebbe we can't 4wd drift our Delica at all. We can puff black smoke while we start to move slowly though lol
Hey guys, can you please tell what brand of aftermarket diff lock you installed on the front axle and how did it perform offroad compared to stock? Thank you!
I’m here because on Hawaii I just saw this vehicle on the road but the guy had a 6 inch lift kit on it and it was the first time I seen it. I kinda want it now
Hi Gav, it's a Super Select stick like the Pajero/Montero/L200. You can move from 2WD to 4WD at up to 60 mph. To engage centre diff lock or low range it needs to be stopped. LSD is option, but we have it in the read. And we've installed after market front diff lock. Regards!
Guys!! This is perfect timing! I just bought the exact same van and am getting it ready for a camper conversion (albeit not a full blown "live-in" conversion. Can't wait to get inspired by you two!!
What modern alternatives did you consider or had in mind? I'm from EU and there isnt much of a minivan market over here, or i just havent found the right site where they list minivans.
Fortunately they were sold in the UK but have held there value and are starting to become a future classic, with them selling for the cost of a slightly newer similar mileage land cruiser
I thought they were imported used into the UK, just like in Australia. But that's great news! That means parts and service should be available from the dealership! You lucky :)
Hey guys, great vid. and thanks for the time you spent doing it. Just one quick question if I may... are they Western Australian number plates on your Delica per chance??? Just curious, thanks again - Peter V.

Totally right! We just think the D5 is not quite the offroad van the L300s and L400s once were. As it's built over the Outlander platform it's a little softer. But an awesome van indeed!
