Trust me ,it can be more but I have been het from the inception and the channel has grown tremendously and I know it will continue to grow to exponential levels in due time
I own a Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo. This is my fifth one.I can tell you they are very reliable and have electronic control suspension, which makes it go soft to hard at the touch of a button. I will always keep mine.
What? I've owned 2 and worked at Pampena Motorsports where we specialized in the 3/S market and they are NOT reliable. They are powerhouses though if you want to build a strong engine.
Very good video, but some things I’d like to add is, the vr-4 trim only ever came in a manual 5spd for earlier gens, and 6spd in later gens. The 3000gt also has 3 facelifts, 1991-1993 had popups, 1994-1998 had the fixed headlights, and the 1999 also had fixed headlights but the front turning marker was moved up near the headlight, and the headlights looked slightly different.
Also there's a 3rd SOHC N/A 6g72 version that was used in later base models, might have just been in the Stealth, can't quite recall. Also I very strongly disagree with him on the interior and suspect he hasn't been in one, or at least not a decently maintained example. It's night & day compared to a lower end car of the era like a DSM, they were more grand tourer than sports car- not the other way around. I daily drove mine as well as crossing state lines routinely on 3 hr drives and was perfectly comfortable doing so...wouldn't want to in a DSM...
FYI. There is a sohc version post face lift that has 170bhp. The sl after the facelift was the mid level model. But the stealth got cancelled they started making the 3000gt with a sohc.
not bashing on you but i’ll point out all of the mistakes in the vid because i own one. base model 91-96 came with sohc v6 engines with around 180 hp (slow as hell) and the sl trim had the dohc v6 with 222 hp through every year of each make. next, the vr-4 is a big ol’ boat, it doesn’t handle poorly, but it definitely doesn’t handle like a dream. the other problem with the vr-4 is that almost every time the all wheel steering and active aero break, or stop working (most people delete them to save weight). another thing i want to point out is pricing, if you look in the right places you can find vr-4’s wayyyyy under 20k, (fb marketplace mainly) in good condition too! also, if anyone reading this is planning on getting into a 3s platform just remember this - base is slow as fuck but looks cool, the sl trims are actually pretty quick cars considering they only weigh around 3300 lbs compared to the vr4’s 3800 lbs, and also the fact that they have more than 210 hp helps too, and lastly the vr4’s are a bitch to take care of sometimes (you might be lucky and have no problems) but if you’re willing to fix vr4 problems, then its definitely an awesome platform (not trying to stray people away, just saying) OH, and one more thing, the aftermarket community for every make/model is not that big really at all.
Gonna fix your mistakes. 91-96 stealth base was the sohc 91-96 stealth R/T was DOHC 91-96 stealth R/T TT was DOHC twin turbo 91-96 3000gt base and SL had DOHC 91-96 3000gt VR-4 was DOHC twin turbo 97-99 3000gt base had SOHC 97-99 3000gt SL was DOHC 97-99 VR-4 was DOHC twin turbo First Gen (91-93, the pop up headlight ones) had a bit less horsepower than 94 onwards, can't remember exactly how much but I think it was about 20hp lower. Other than that you're spot on, 3sx is one of the only aftermarket manufacturers left from my knowledge
I was lucky and got a almost perfect condition 3000gt (1998), and it works as a daily, if and only if the previous owners took care of it. Plus, please change the timing belt, if it hasn’t already been done. It saves you some hassle and worry in colder temps. Almost got a panic attack starting it on a rainy cold day.
DSM's were build by Chrysler in Illinois USA.. 3000GT , GTO and Dodge Stealths were built in Nagoya Plant in Japan and they heve nothing to do with DSM ;)
I own a 95 VR4 with 50k miles. She drives like a brand new Cadillac. She sounds great, looks great and feels great. The one thing you got wrong in this video was the cupholder thing. They do have cup holders. The misconception probably stems from the fact that the cup holders are their own piece, separate from the car, that sits in the center console. Holds 2 cups. The only crappy thing is, if you have cups in the cup holders, you have to drive stick with two cups right behind your arm lmao.
MARK! Ive been looking at cheap JDM cars to import and I remember in one of your vids the Galant VR4. There are no videos on YT about the car that go into the depth you go in. Can you do a vid on the 8th gen galant?
1991 vr4 here. They do have cupholders, they just so happen to be in a removable tray inside of the small center console, they are useless, the console has to be open to use them. I had my ashtray spot a custom 3d printed cupholder but it'll still only hold like... a red bull lmao
Don't forget about the active aero system. It had an air dam on the bottom front bumper that would come down and aide with downforce in combination with the rear active spoiler. The active suspension system. The active exhaust system. And the twin turbo all-wheel-drive 3000GT VR4 and stealth RT twin turbo was never offered an automatic. Although the GTO in Japan and Europe I believe did.
I’m awd converting my base model. Couple things cup holders they have an option to have them in the arm rest. It’s a GT car it can be used as a daily but maintenance needs to be done first
@@markroden I disagree. That 'thing' isn't a 3000GT anymore nor it keeps the status the model has today - a classic sports car. It's just another boring tuned car that could belong in a Fast & Furious film.
Also the n a base models do have some decent tuning potential they carry the same engine and bottom end. The heads are different but you can with some effort TT convert the base model. Also the base model weighs about 700-800lbs less than a vr4 and less electrical gremlins. And you can fully build one as an all-motor build.Extremely rare I think I have the only 1 that's currently running and driving.
bro this is my first car but let me tell you why. I got this car for 1k (base model) and the only thing wrong with it was the alternator, the interior is kinda good only bad thing is the air bags, for the body the only thing wrong is the front bumper and the driver's door also the headlights are broken and finding them in good condition is a pain, also also the the paintjob is booty the previous owner painted the whole thing silver including the headlights can you believe that apart from that the car runs great with no ticks. I'm 16 but my dad helps me restore the car .Great video and keep up the good work
I have a first gen base model green one. Belonged to my dad. When he passed away I restored it. I tuned the carb an swapped the plugs for e3 plugs and it went from 22mpg to 30mpg. Has plenty of power for me and a good gas milage
Learned to drive a manual on my parent's twin turbo stealth. 1st and 2nd gear would pull your foot off the pedal from the G-force. Made it tricky at first to modulate gas smoothly.
There is a 168 hp SOHC BASE MODEL. There are cup holders, it's one.of the few options for the vr4. Reliable as you make it, turbos shred oil. So you have to change your oil religiously.
I have a 1997 3000gt SL that I drive a few times a week. I've had it for 4 years. I've seen like 6 or 7 others on the road in all that time. Rare and super cool looks. Love it!
couplethings, 1: there where three stages in the 3000gt life, the pop ups, the fixed headlights, and the last year with the 99 front end, the 99 had the "battle wing" for the vr4 model. there where 2 engines until 96 i belive, then they made a sohc version, so twin turbo, dual over head cam and single over head cam. they also made it in 5 speed until 96 where they added the 6 speed for the vr4.
I have been the proud owner of a 1992 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 since it was brand new. My mother helped me finance it when I was on 11th grade in Brooklyn ny. Here I am 30 years later retired in Florida driving around in my same first car lol. Hey In 1997 I purchased a 1987 Buick Grand National and I love that car too. Maybe you can do a story on the 1985-1987 Buick regal T-type. The turbo v6 was faster then the vette back in 1987.
Funny thing is I wanted either a 3000GT or a 1960s American muscle car for my 1st car back in highschool. My partents bought me a first gen Mustang. And I daily drove it for almost 8 years now. And its real unreliable to the point where now I wanna sell it for a fun, reliable Japanese vehicle. I like how the 3000GT and 3 and 4G Eclipse look but especially nowadays Mitsubishi coulddn't hold a candle to Honda or Toyota for quality. And then I found out about Honda Accords with manual transmissions which are rare but still easier to find than Eclipses in manuals. When doing my reseach into 7th gen Accords with the V6 engine and manual they weigh like 500lbs less than the 3KGT, they have a HUGE gas tank which is great for the highway, the can sound good with a good exhaust and since its a Honda I shouldn't have to do much to it to keep it running if I got a good one to begin with. I wanna have it thoroughly inspected before I buy it but I have seen Accord V6 manuals from like 1800 bucks to 12,000 depending on condition or year. I think it would be worth it as a daily driver. I also didn't want to be forced to use 93 octane gas so I didn't want a turbo.
I got my ‘94 SL model for 1900 with an auto transmission and manual swapped it for 1k more and swapped the motor for a lower miles one and its a total fever dream
3 facelifts the 95 was different. And my 95SL was comfortable, so is my 98VR-4, and there are tons of 3000GT groups and they are fairly reliable. No you can’t just hop in one that’s been sitting, but they are great cars
For the convertible it was only available in the US because mitsubishi contracted an aftermarket company in long beach CA to modify vehicles. They were imported to that port anyways.
FYI, not trying to be a dick here, but the Z15A chassis designation mainly describes the face lifted models and later, with the twin turbo cars wearing Z15A designation being a 1994 Mitsubishi GTO MR (light weight) model. Hard top spyder (2nd gen) models also wore the Z15AM badge being turbocharged. If you had an N/A single cam base, or an N/A twin cam SL, the car wore chassis designation Z11A, and for reasons unbeknownst to me and many others the Japan only all wheel drive N/A GTO SR wore a Z15A chassis badge BEFORE face lifted 2nd gen models became available….. I think it has something to do with the Options on any particular car that separated a Z15A from a Z16A, but for the record my 1st gen 91’ VR-4 is in fact, Z16A. 👍🏾
100% I’ve got one in the U.K. in fact I’ve got the only one in the U.K (that’s on the road). It’s called a Sigma over here. Mines is lowered on modded coilovers. Deep dish alloys etc
He did ok, but missed a few key points. A 3rd facelift was available later on and just beccause its not a VR4 does not mean it's FWD. I owned the non turbo AWD for a few years. Obviously I imported it from japan. Fun car even without turbo.
I have a 91 stealth es I got for 200$ earlier this year I’m gonna do a LS swap project on it prolly in the next 2 years still in the process of gettin it running
@@markroden Thanks Mark! I appreciate it! Im 16 and just learning about cars so this should help alot. I have an 02 fav gen bc small fog lights rest are ugly haha. Much Love Mark
I bought a brand new one back in 1991 as my 1st car after getting my 1st job. Parents hated it. Made me park it on the street not driveway, and eventually forced me to sell it
i think these prices in the video might be subject to american $ , for a Mitsubishi GTO in Australia your looking at 40k-60 k for a well looked after example
Yeah, in Europe the SLs go for 9-18k and vr4 at around 20k. I also have to say that I've never saw one with my eyes, and in my country (Spain) there are only about 15 on sale between all the online websites
I think you got the chassis codes backwards. I believe the z15A did not have all wheel steering while the z16A did. So the early models were z16A and the later models were z15A. In japan I believe both models were sold simultaneously which is why in the us it "went backwards".
Do you genuinely recommend them to be a track car? I see so many people recommend against it because of its weight. I'd obviously get a much more simpler car first like a miata so I can get used to working on my own car first, but I'd LOVE to have a vr4 as a track car one day
They are not the best choice for a track car-not that they can't perform, they can, especially if purpose built for it. However, it's not just weight, if it's the twin turbo one that you would want to track, they can be complex, and expensive to work on and or mod. A DSM is significantly lighter, easier to work on 2 less cylinders (less parts to buy=cheaper), 1 less head, 1 less turbo. There's a reason I'm building my DSM for the track, just like there's a reason my vr4 is the one I'm building for the road. Miata is a great starter car for an enthusiast looking to get into the hobby. If you genuinely plan/want to get a vr4 a DSM could be a good choice to cut your teeth on, and again, is precisely what I did. Power wise it is probably going to cost twice as much to make the same power on the vr4 as a DSM. A FWD 3s wouldn't be a bad place to start, they're a lot easier to work on and have a lot less to go wrong, even the used and abused(And poorly maintained) ones routinely pass 200k miles.
Mitsubishi Evo Lancer VII PLEASE. 🙏💚 It's my first favorite JDM sports car because I watched 2 Fast 2 Furious when I was young, and I liked it when I first saw it.
The easily removable ashtray doubles as a cup holder; sadly there's no ashtray holder. There's no helping that engine bay though. Parts for the thing are insane; calipers for example cost $600/ea new; and that's if you can find them. It is surprisingly comfortable as a dd; and that's coming from someone who's 6'3. I wish I had the time to get my tt back in good shape.
I really was interested in this video but there's a lot of things in here that are just not true or just wrong. Just to name one, you mentioned it has no cup holders. It has 2 in the center console. You also said that the VR4 came with a manual AND automatic which just isnt true. It only came in the 6 speed manual as the Base model and the SL came in auto or 5 speed manual.
9:07 as a new mechanic. Yep you're 100% right. I hate working on hyundais (especially hatchbacks) here in India. There is almost no room. And f%ck Volkswagen.
