As a mechanic who worked at a Mitsubishi dealership for 7 years doing rear spark plugs or a timing belt on these aren’t as scary as some think IF you know the right “hacks”. Also when doing the timing belt, best to replace cam seals, water pump and crank seal all at the same time. Saves you having to come back later and tear it all apart again.

It amazed alot of motoring journalist's how fast the car was, they pointed at the car's official power figures as being way down from what it should be. I thought some review's exaggerated the cars performance a little tbh, Autospeed stated that it thrashed the Subaru WRX STI that they had access to at the time. Plus the Ralliart Magna did it despite being weight disadvantaged by another passenger. But I changed my mind about it when I learned that some Ralliart Magna's had 210kw instead of 180kw, I'm not certain how much torque those car's would have but probably more than 350nm. Mitsubishi probably gave those car's to the reviewer's I think. There was 30 that were Supercharged too.
@skippmclovan1135

When the first released 6G74 Ralliart was maiden Aussie road tested, the reviewer stated in his final written report . . . "Who would want a car this powerful??!" I think that says it all . . This is one 60 degree vee 6 pot grunt machine!

A very interesting take on the Ralliart.....I worked for MMAL Australia Ltd close to 20 years before we closed the plant in 2008....I still remember the nightshift I worked and saw the prototype that you pictured in your video......When this car was produced this was properly the most exciting time for us as a company because we started to shake the old Grandpa Magna Spec vehicles to a more sporty version that would take on the likes of the HSV Xu6 of the times...Ive still got my Ralliart Magna its only done 70,000klms good luck hunting down the parts because they are rare as hens teeth these days especially the parts you are after.......Good Luck with your project Im looking forward to seeing your progress..

@@MotoringBoxTV The engineers in Japan insisted the Adelaide local engineers used heavier valve springs i was told, even though the camshaft changes were just a smallish 10% increase to the base circle radius lift and a 6 degree overall valve timing advance. @dodgeviper89
@dodgeviper89 Год назад
I'd recommend one modification, look at fitting a modified 380 intake manifold. The intake manifolds were a carry over item from the 3L motor and they just don't have the capacity to breathe. A 380 manifold is about $40 at the wreckers, and a competent alu welder can make the necessary modifications for $200ish (Add a vac port for FPR, and move the TB flange so it bolts up like stock) It'll let the motor breathe better. Apart from that, not too much else you can do to them before spending some coin. Honestly the Ralliart 3.5L with a 380 intake goes so well you wouldn't bother with the whole 3.8L motor.
@skippmclovan1135
@skippmclovan1135 Год назад
There is a well accomplished performance engine building firm in Perth which can alternatively provide a modified 6G74 inlet manifold with a 150% plenum capacity, using the existing runners - this provides for further top end power WITHOUT loss of low and mid-range torque which is what is 'felt' underfoot - for an unmodified engine the low and mid-range can be significantly improved 'under the foot' by the addition of intake runner tuned length 'ram tubes' in conjunction with the 150% increased plenum capacity. This would be my recommendation, unless you wish to go racing all day at 6,000rpm! Modifications are a compromise in one form or another when you have a computer controlled modern engine design.
@skippmclovan1135
@skippmclovan1135 3 месяца назад
So the 380 inlet manifold has 'narrower diameter' inlet runners than the 6G74 standard inlet manifold (that is of the same design as the 6G72 manifold). This really surprised me, when an ordered 'ram-tubed' 380 manifold turned-up, and wouldn't bolt-up exactly, orifice to orifice, to the 6G74 lower valley intake (it is a split two piece, bolted together intake manifold system that these engines use). In other words the 380 manifold was dumping air down into a LARGER set of lower pipes. And this lower exit section of the 380 tubes was well below the lower edges of the inserted ram tubes. I was told by a speedway race engineer that this would tend to stop reversion. It would also mean low and mid-range torque would be increased over the larger diameter standard 6G74 upper inlet runners. Top end power however would probably be restricted by the 380's smaller diameter runners one would assume. So, in the the case of the 380 manifold over the 6G74 one, 'bigger' turns out in reality to be 'smaller', and quite noticeably so too. That surprised the heck out of me. If you want to run your engine regularly at 6,000 rpms it is going to pull down air more easily through the bog standard inlet manifold, which turns out to be significantly bigger internally than the 380's intake manifold runners.

Epic score mate. I owned a 2002 Magna VR-X for 6.5 years till it was rear ended and written off. Was one of the best cars I've ever owned. Never had any issues and was super clean when I bought it. (These and the VR-X along with the Magna Sport were Australia's fastest 6 cyl cars, till the XR-6 turbo came along ) Fit and finish of these cars is testament on how Mitsubishi Australia built these so well and were a very underrated car for it's time and the only people that said they were crap were people that never drove or owned one. For "only" 180kw these Ralliarts were very quick in the day and still are. They're a big car that can hustle. Exceptional ones still pull big money for a 20+ year old car. Got a really big soft spot for the TJ Magnas. I'd own one again in a heartbeat.

Hi we own the white Ralliart one in photo's You showed for the colours . They are the best cars that have gone under the radar that not many people know about and really fun to drive and best of all you don't see them at all on the streets. Have fun doing it up and I will be watching your progress great to see another one getting back on the streets again soon . Scott

Well done mate. I've owned these cars for years now (Currently have 3) Instead of a Ralliart I just bought and am currently restoring an AWD Magna in Zen purple (only made 20 I believe) and mine is only one with sunroof. Was going to be scrapped as it had hail damage and engine was stuffed. Have done an engine swap (6G75 from the 380 and cammed) car is amazing. I don't regret it anymore. Still much more work to do.

@@MotoringBoxTV Nah I think I know the one you mean though, If it's the one I think it was for sale not long after I bought this one. This one came from SA. It was originally built to spec by someone who worked for Mitsi back in the day. It had a Ralliart motor in it instead of the standard 3.5. Sadly whoever owned it after that drove it like a tool and destroyed the motor. Incase no one else has told you, you got a good buy considering it's a manual and sable black is a very desirable color. Sadly hard to have good paint on then unless they have been resprayed. From the video lots of things on there are easy fixes. Also most of the guys on the Magna groups were really happy with your video. Just thought you should know.

The Magna gets a thumbs up from me! Not only is it apparently a rare car in Australia, but we never got them in the UK, so it seems pretty exotic to me 😂

Still remember vividly the commercials for those, looked like it had potential to be fairly popular and help dig Mitsubishi Australia out of the hole they were known to be in at the time, but even up until now I've not seen many of them on the road. Always had a soft spot for these, keen to see it get a bit of love and more life under her.

I think any car is worth what someone’s willing to pay, you were happy @ $5.5k, so that’s what it’s worth! I remember when tidy ones were fetching $8-$10k back when I wanted one 7-8 years ago. Nice car, very excited to see what you do with it!

I'm excited for this new project. I have always wanted to know more about the Magna and my poor falcon needs a respray and depending on who you ask it's either super expensive or cheap or a nightmare. so I really look forward to you finding out more about the process and if its worth it.

If you've got the gear or access to it, and the space, it's not as daunting as it may seem. Expensive though if you use proper paints and thinners.

There was a new red Ralliart Magna near my house when I was a kid with the number plate “UPTOOL”. And a mate’s dad brought one home from work, and got a ride in it, but he brought home Monaros and XR6 turbos, so he didn’t think much of it. But I like it for what it is.

@nicholasconnolly4234
@nicholasconnolly4234 Год назад
That is the Mitsubishi Magna TJ Ralliart, so it's a bit more than just a body kit it has a very different interior theme and there are some better parts in the mechanics compared to the Sports. Also the Sports and VR-X make 163kw while this makes 180kw, I've seen some test at 250HP. So it's a bit more like the difference between the GT350-GT500 than the Falcon-Falcon XR-6
@Paul_Zernick
@Paul_Zernick Год назад
Correct. Owned a few 2 decades ago. Essentially a 3.5 with a body kit & map. Not exactly iconic or a classic. I had a wing skirts, exhaust, front splitter on my solara, tuned, suspension wheels etc. Not any different. The ralliart was a cheap say S-Line or M-sport of the day. Just Mitsubishi chucking a wing a badge & a tune on a Magna to lever off their lancer evo's. A bigger Evo however they most definately are not. Could you say pull 200kw+ out of one? Asked around back in the day. Was never a thing. So no, no answer on that. There was no shortage of jdm alternatives out there guys were tuning. Magnas were not one of them. So I sold my 2nd, never to invest in a 3rd.
