Mitsubishi Pajero Jnr Brake Overhaul. Problems...

Can you clean brake parts with a bucket of water and a battery charger?! Working with ‪@WhitelandRestorations‬ I used electrolysis to find out. Is it a viable derusting method?
We saved this Pajero Junior JDM 4x4 from a local scrapyard and are now trying to get it back to roadworthy. More soon hopefully!
Merchandise can be found at hubnut.org - thank you!

Stopping power is all about dissipating heat, and the best colour for dissipating heat is matt black. Heatsinks in electronic equipment are usually matt black for that reason

All from the comfort of your living room? For a rare and odd car? The site clearly lists 110 and 123 mm long pads for this car. The price over the counter is also likely to be at least double. Only professional mechanics, who just bill the customer whatever the list price is, and don't have time to wait for parts, are better off buying from the local auto parts store.

Great progress on the cleaning up of the callipers. Soda crystals are great for all sorts of things including removing the tea stains from mugs if you use them a few times more than you should... so I hear. It's annoying that the new bits are not right for the car though. It's a bit of a nightmare sometimes but plucking out a positive from the disaster at least you know which part numbers are not compatible. Many thanks for the Pajero Junior update.

try Parts In Motion for car parts, uk based and branded parts, if you buy and give them your reg number, should the part not fit then its free return postage. I am not saying they will do your brake pads for the junior, but for other parts for your fleet give them a go.

Electrolytic rust removal only works by line of sight from the sacrificial elektrode, so it works better if you place several around the objects to be de-rusted. If it's an assembly, connect each part to power, as there may not be good electrical connection between the individual parts. For instance an adjustable wrench.

@@HubNut Ian, have to tried CRC's Evaporust? Its supposed to be really good. Non-toxic and seems to work in an analogous way enzymes in our stomach work to break down starches. Its expensive at 37,00 per 5 litres, however, it can be reused a few times. Edd China did a sponsored video but the results from a test were so ridiculously good he decided to dip a whole chassis in the stuff. It came out like new! Might be worth checking out in future when you go to dip parts like this size in future.

It's best to do the electrolysis in a well-ventilated area, because it produces some amount of hydrogen (the bubbles) and therefore there's at least a theoretical risk of fire. In practice I suspect the amounts generated from small parts aren't much of a concern, but still, a good idea to be cautious.

Hello Ian. I'll go out on a limb and make a suggestion. 10 minutes per pad on a bandsaw and a bit of filing and you could hand fit the new pads to the caliper. The old one can act as a template. Watch for dust, although not asbestos, I don't imagine it's too healthy to breathe it in. I was wondering if some pistons from another model might work. As long as the diameter is bang on and the length is right they should work. Any relief on the face could be ground in with care. Not a bodge if done carefully. It could be viewed as a stop gap measure while the correct parts are sourced which might take some time. Ok, I'm a hack, but just suggesting it so you are aware of the potential option. All the best, Mart.

When it is a car that might not have been sold in germany it's good to get an estimate and the right OE part numbers from a dealer in a country where the model has been sold. I've heard dipping parts in a tub full of vinegar has the same effect?

Is it possible to upgrade the brakes to the ones from a different Mitsubishi model, just for ease of parts replacement more than anything

I'm sure you have but have you approached mitzybits?

Yeah. They have some bits but not everything I need. Caliper seals seem in very short supply...

I have an inceasing number of parts from them, I guess i'll ebay one day, i've even beeen stuck with parts having taken out the £4 return insurance as i had gone over the 200 days while building a collection of parts. That's on a couple of common VW's to. A way to track down the part number is to check the fitament dropdown for the different makes or especially duplicates of the same make (brand) for part numbers then image search google. Another way to try and find part no;s is to check other motorfactors like Euro, GSF Etc... Also enthusiast web pages, it's a long slog sometimes, and quick othertimes. It can be rewarding though. I look after a 2016 cityGo, 2002 Polo, 2012 golf and a 2001 gti proton. It's a knightmare these days.

That can be a problem when you get bits and don't find out until too late that they're wrong!

I usually have the problem that it loods like they have the part and it says its in stock... and then you order it and they find that in reality there is no stock and no new supply is coming.... especially with Alfa 164 parts thuis was and is so frustrating. There are no more parts but they still list them...

The site lists 110 and 123mm pads for this car. Who's at fault? But I have had my issues with them as well. Can't beat them for price and convenience, though.

There are so many things that can go wrong, that to be sent the wrong parts seems gratuitous. Oh, well, nil carborundum as we used to say in a previous historical period.

No part No's stamped on the calipers or back of the pads then?

Seems not. Any visible numbers didn't work as part numbers. Have since found access to parts diagrams online.

Different. Ultrasonic cleaning uses ultrasound vibrations to remove crud.

You would have had a quicker, cheaper and better result if you had just dipped the calipers in a bucket of white vinegar. All that wasted electricity.

It works excellent, when done right, which is not one tiny anode in the corner, but an array all around the parts. It goes into all crevices. And it dosn't smell like acetic acid -strong vinegar - does.
