Mitzi Gaynor: "I quit film because I was ordinary in them."

Mitzi's films included There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), which featured Irving Berlin's music and also starred Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, and Johnnie Ray; and South Pacific, the 1958 motion picture adaptation of the stage musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
On July 30, 2008, Gaynor, along with Kenny Ortega, Elizabeth Berkley, Shirley MacLaine, and cast members from High School Musical, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, and a host of others, participated in the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences TV Moves Live, a celebration of 60 years of dance on television. Gaynor appeared performing the final few bars of "Poor Papa", a song-and-dance number from her 1969 TV spectacular, Mitzi's 2nd Special. Four months later, on November 18, City Lights Pictures released Mitzi Gaynor Razzle Dazzle: The Special Years, a new documentary celebrating Gaynor's annual television specials of the '60s and '70s. The film, which was broadcast on public television and released on DVD, includes show-stopping moments from the original specials (digitally remastered in 5.1 stereo) along with newly taped interviews with Gaynor colleagues, friends, and admirers, including Bob Mackie, Carl Reiner, Kristin Chenoweth, Rex Reed, Tony Charmoli, Alton Ruff, Randy Doney, and Kelli O'Hara. Gaynor's one-woman show, Razzle Dazzle: My Life Behind the Sequins, toured the United States and Vancouver, from 2009 thru 2014, including an acclaimed 2 week engagement in NYC.
On December 4, 2006, Jack Bean, Gaynor's husband of 52 years, died of pneumonia in the couple's Beverly Hills, California home, aged 84. A producer and personal manager, Bean guided Gaynor's career. Mitzi is now 85 years old.

I love how honest Mitzi is in this interview - and all he interviews she gives on RU-vid. She says that she didn't have a movie star personae. I don't quite agree with her. Whenever Mitzi was on the screen in any of her movies, there was light, happiness, and effervescence.

Very fine interview and video clip... Mitzi is one in a million... and very modest and forthcoming about her fame, talent and career. Her singing and dancing in that 1967 Academy Awards Show to Georgy Girl is the stuff of legend, as is her appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that helped introduce the Beatles to America. Her place in history and in the entertainment industry is her's to keep now. Along with South Pacific, she will be remembered for all those wonderful television specials during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s on CBS. Bravo Mitzi!

Mitzi is adorable. Funny that she ended the interview with the statement 'look at my work, that is what I do'. I just finished watching a previous video interview with Mitzi and she said one of the reasons that she got the role in South Pacific is because she auditioned whereas other actresses did not, instead saying 'look at my work, that is what I do'.

Believe me Mitzi, you are one of the main reasons why I continue watching South Pacific almost once a year with my wife and still love watching you playing Nellie Forbush from Small Rock Arkansas. Don't be so modest. I think that your acting skills were extraordinary enough to make me fall madly in love with the character you helped to create. I think I enjoy watching that movie as much now as I did when it first came out in 1958. My crush for you never waned, never, ever. I'll bet there are millions of other South Pacific aficionados who feel the same way I do. You touched us in a very special and tender way and that, I believe, is something you should be very happy about!

I last saw and met Mitzi in 1973 at one of her stage performances of, "South Pacific". Wonderful lady and a consummate pro. Not many know that Elizabeth Taylor (lacked the voice) and Doris Day (Day's star-power was feared it might overpower the film) were first considered for the part of "Nellie" before Mitzi got the part. She was great!
@davidallen508
@davidallen508 4 года назад
Doris Day would have elevated “South Pacific” to an outstanding entertainment rather than a merely pleasant experience.The studio was not prepared to pay D.D. what she was worth (she was the world’s no.1 box office star).The result speaks for itself.”South Pacific” and ‘’My Fair Lady” were the two most successful shows in the history of Broadway yet they compromised on casting the female leads with the movie versions and I will never understand why.Doris Day and Julie Andrews were both head and shoulders above the others. .
