Mixed Breed Chickens 

Life hack: bantam is a recessive gene so you can have a bantam rooster cross laying hens and the offspring are almost normal size! Just thought my fellow chicken breed mixers might appreciate 😃👍

I've got a flock of golden comets, an olive egger, and cuckoo marans, all being covered by a white silkie roo. So excited to see the mixes.

Exotic chickens and interesting results is what I'm calling those mix breeds. To each hobbyists in breeding chickens that have certain breeds or supposedly "mutts", don't get discouraged, they're your chickens and for you to appreciate the outcome of the offsprings. I myself have blue Gamefowl and their colors of plumage mystify me every year.

Beautiful and happy results as far as I am concerned. Plus no inbreeding!

Mixed breeds are the most interesting

Thank you for sharing your beautiful examples of hybrids. There is a lot of controversy about hybridization amongst the "purists." Genetically, they are stronger, but for some, they lose the initial purpose of the F1 generation (meat or egg production.) We were quite poor in my youth, and my grandfather raised large dual-purpose birds (Rocks, Orpingtons, etc.) commercially. The broody hens were of no use to him because they stopped laying, so he gave them to us. We had a large, eclectic flock of broody hens, so never had to buy chicks, and never worry about genetic regression due to inbreeding. As a child, like you, I loved to see what we would get every time a hen hatched a clutch.

For frizzle gene if you were to mix a frizzle and silkie you would get 25% smooth,25% frizzle and50% half and half 🙂

love those crosses, you know people dont care if a horse is crossbred if they can ride it, and many crosses are made for the purpose of putting on a gait and coloring to a foal, big demands for gaited beautiful horses, and if there is enough of the crossbreds with certain characteristics they will then create a registry for them.

The little frizzled one is a Cochin frizzled x serama that’s why he’s so small I have a all black serama frizzled his feathers are are like your black girl that has the beautiful sheen

I just started getting into chickens so I don’t know if/what roosters I have but I have golden and silver laced wyandottes and buff orpingtons and americanas and Easter egged and my favorites are my 5 silkies I have 2 black 1 paint 1 buff 1 white I think the buff paint and one black are roosters tell me what I should try and mix I might have a silver Wyandotte rooster and a golden Wyandotte rooster but I can’t tell at all on the others because they are still young

If a mix breed lay two different color eggs will the color be affected or do they just get the genes of the hens egg color?

this is so neat, i never even thought of this. do you think that theres any health benefits to them being mixed breed? i know some breeds have certain potential health risks, right? i wonder if they handle illness better, have less reproductive issues, and live longer. so cool! i have two hens (Frida a buff brahma and Agnes a silver laced wyandotte) inside right now with what we think is Cocci :-[ they seem to be responding well to the Corid, but we lost some time because a vet misdiagnosed it as a fungal crop issue on Friday and we werent able to get ahold of them till yesterday

I believe the frizzle gene is a 50/50 gene, but their is a downfall, if two frizzles breed with one another 1/4 of the babies will be normal, 1/2 of the babies will be frizzle and 1/4 of the babies will only survive for a few days if you are lucky. Frizzle is a dominant trait (Not involving silkie feathers into the equation), but if a bird has that trait twice it will die. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I had this hen who was a mixed breed then she made 5 more of these chickens then made 2 more 2 years later but i had to separate the 2 brothers from their older brothers because they fight them all the time

I have chicks 🐥 that I can breed together when they grow and I want to so it’s not silly to me.
