So true. Having worked in some of the biggest studios in the world I can say this dude is totally on point. I’m not saying plug-ins won’t eventually catch up to outboard gear, but they’re definitely not there yet. When I compare my analog outboard to the plug-ins, none of the plug-ins can touch Physical outboard. It’s not a matter of opinion or preference, it’s just a fact. Just put a JunoDS next to a 106 & pull up same patch. Not even a fair fight.
You not lying most ppl can't afford it. I've been analog hands on for the last 5yrs and its a sound that can't be duplicated no matter how hard they try. From the tubes to fet transistors
Most of those Analog equipments don't have Mid-Side capabilities amd nowadays its really a big deal. And with the warmth or character, i beleive that its a personal taste and sound and the way i go about it is to use multiple instances of analog emulation plugins each one with a fairly sound till i feel like its warm or bright enough. If i have to use 3 nls plugins to achieve a certain character on drums i will do it, if i have to use 3 ssl bus comp on my mix bus i will and it really works for me, its literally a hack that i use when mixing my clients mixes at my home studio. Another one is, i can make a sound dark/warm and punchy enough and later use something like Fresh air at the end of the vocal chain to give it that air, beleive me, it sounds way better. Its just personal taste and workflow.
You can mix in the box and make as many hits as mixing on an SSL. But the problem is. If the song ain’t a hit it don’t matter and if the song is a hit it don’t matter. It’s all about the song. These young producers have way more creative options by mixing in the box and I’m an analog guy hard core. Worked on SSL for years I mix in the box.
The box is the same like when digital daw just came in the game...we can do way more in the box with plugins and its easier to do in the box. Ppl only talk about warmth when comparing analog
@@Sleeplessnights007 I agree with you. The only downside to the box is too many options. Analog will always sound better why because humans are analog and analog strikes a different emotion on humans then digital does. But with that being said nobody cares only us engineers can hear the difference but the listeners can feel the difference they just don’t know what there feeling. So with all that being said nobody care as far as the listeners goes they either like the song or they don’t. Analog will make like most songs because analog just feels better , and it has more emotion. But analog is over. For the most part l.
in the dj Khaled recording God Did, you said the Avalon vt-757. But you are supposed to say the Avalon vt-737 cause there is no such thing as a Avalon vt-757 and he also uses the Apollo from Universal Audio.
For me since I cant afford one of those consoles at the moment is kinda sad LOL but I would love to get my hands on a consoles like those. God job George. Greeting from Panama
This video can discourage some people. He is saying that analog is the best. Well it isn’t! Sometimes it is a huge problem because analog has lots of noise, sometimes you want it and sometimes not. I use Universal Audio plugins SSL E and Neve 88RS ch.strips and I love how these sound! One advice for aspiring producers from me…use analog drum samples…multisampled instruments like guitars and orchestral stuff and these days we have soooo many analog samples for free that you do not have to worry about anything! ;)
Analog dont have that mich noise i got hybrid and its a cheat its faster to get that finish sound you can never get that glue and 3D vibe from plugins because it cannot replace real voltage its facts its not discouraging ppl you can still make good music itb but otb gives that polish and with depth that plugins cannot do period
Yo these videos are amazing, but please throw on a HP filter on your voice lol. Any time you hit a plosive, I think somebody's slamming a car door outside my house.
F@ck man , its been almost a year that i compare and mix my songs comparing goodkid n butterfly ... no wonder why no matter what i do my drums n bass can't go as high as his ... a legend love him - cant wait to work with him and get my own ssl :)
I garuntee you don't need an ssl to get what your missing, at most his hardware might make it simpler to get the exact sound, but I promise you could also do it entirely in the box and get just as good of results with just as much work if you found a process. Like the other guys said, saturation, compression, and then good sound selection and arrangement will get you 95% there on its own.
well saturation and distortion wont work as you may think - that's why he says no matter what these companies promise you ,you cant achieve the analog "good" clipping ... maybe and little bit of saturation to the upper mids of 808 or upper mid of a kick .... but it wont do a difference cause saturation is about flavour ... parallel compression i wont suggest it - what i would do is double track basically parallel compression without the compressor but again you can double as much as you want the track but the sum should go below -12 rms ....or else there is clipping digital which sounds bad - thats where the analog comes in , he clips it on the ssl which sounds good and then routes it back into the daw and he has an advantage over me or over anyone who uses just the computer daw , sonically and level wise :P thats why his drums especially kick n snare go so loud and clear :)@@terenceblack3724
no it won't -but never mind :) if you want you can show me a track you ve made and we can comprare it to let's say money trees- kendrick lamar @@incognitiveincognito
but that chances are that if you have an ssl console, you're probably coming from a family who professionally do music, and have been trained to use it lol
But if I had an unlimited budget I would mix solely in analog. I don’t want templates either because if you use templates all your mixes will sound the same and you will not discover new tricks through mistakes. Templates will make you lazy and less creative. I would rather have to start from scratch on every single mix just for the creative process. Because I feel different every single day life is not a template neither is music.
Seems he mastered a cracked version and shitty mic before he got out the box and so he got the chance to use real authentic gear so of course it would change the game
Ali mixed Section 80 with cracked plugins and a broken microphone. He earned his stripes and it's cool to see younger mixers like Ali preserve the great engineering that went into those boards and still utilise it
Wow REALLY??? His secret is using 150.000€ ssl G 4000 console??? Wow who would of thought his mixes sound great and his mentor was Dr.dre lol. People dont even know how much $$$ you need to spend to mantain these old consoles. And if hes using this console hes probably using all analogue vintage gear worths millions. No wonder his sound is good. Oh i forgot thats "his secret" while madvillain was recorded on 1500€ of gear and slaps
Watch the video he is using the console to just sum at this point. He could mix all itb and it would sound 97% there. It’s the ear not the gear to some extent 😉
