Derek- I need to say that I enjoy your videos immensly!! I have restored traditional stained glass windows for 30 years now with 10 years of that as a full time business. It is so refreshing to watch and listen to you in my shop as I work, you are an inspiration to me as some days i feel that I am all alone working everyday in this business. As a past professor, I applaud your teaching and please know that I believe in "Life Long Learning" and am learning from you!! Thank you so much, keep up the good work in providing quality educational videos for all of us out there in the field! As a side note, as a life long hands on artist, you have inspired me to go ahead and push the envelope with all the designs and drawings I have stuffed into a cabinet for years! I secretly love contemporary designs, even though all my restoration work is traditional and historic in nature. I can't wait to find the time to grasp my abstract ideas and run with them. Thank you again

Hello Derek, Your videos are certainly very helpful in helping me understand how fused glass, once an orthodoxe artistic technique, has evolved in a sense that paint is no more the only medium used to animate a work of glass. I would certainly love to hear you more about all media that can be used in fused glass projects and the lifespan of such modern projects. "I would have never guessed that a film coming out of a printer could be used to create fused glass". I thank you so so much for generously and professionnally sharing your knowledge in the field of stained glass. Joanne Ontario (Canada)

Hello Derek, That's so gorgeous. I make fused glass pieces (small to medium sizes) and I truly wish I was your pupil to work stained glass just as you do. So I have questions : 1) When a client has agreed on your proposed design, how will you know the time frame needed to complete the panel(s) : In fact, I watched the video you made when in Germany (Peter's studio) to make the best possible samples for your design presented to a church. You then had to travel (few days), make the samples, etc... 2) When a design has more than one panel, when installed, you secure them with copper wires and saddle bars. One bar could be installed horizontally in the middle of one pannel (depending on its height) whereas another could be at the joint of two pannels. In that particular case, do you have to use some cement in the channels of the lead bars to make sure water won't seep into them? Thank you so much for your follow-up and best regards. Joanne Côté Québec (Canada)
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 7 месяцев назад
Hi Joanne, So glad you liked the video. To answer your question 1 the time depends on how busy I am with other projects. I usually only give estimated completion times. Question 2, the joint at each panel does not have cement between it, just dry glazed. The top lead covers the botton lead so no water gets through the joint 🙂

I find your film/laser printer hack interesting but obviously not a permanent solution. Hi Derek, Another great video, thanks :-) When you screen-print onto glass, what paint do you use and what do you mix it with (e.g. oil, medium, water or whatever?) And do you usually print on the underside or on top...and once fired, is it durable outside as well as indoors (i.e. is it as durabe as other methods of application?? Thanks. Kate

@DerekHuntArtist 2 года назад
Hi Kate, When I've done my own screen printing I usually mix regular iron oxide glass paint ( tracing black will give the best results) with a screen printing medium such as pine oil, or a commercially produced screen printing medium. I print twice onto the same sheet of glass to get a stronger printed image then fire in the kiln in the usual way. I print on the side of the glass which will face inside the building to protect it from the weather, in the same way as you would with regular painted images. Hope that's helpful. WOW! I began looking for how to paint on an existing window. It's an important & meaningful project to celebrate the life my late husband & I.shared. He was a painter at heart, though not for a living & some of his best paintings are all over my little house. He was fascinated by geometric forms in nature even a !are nice which used to hang in our living room. Occasionally some.conservative neighbor or whomever would appear a bit surprised & we'd have to say, " Look.C!OSELY at the painting. John painted lines around the geometric shapes in her body. Anyonc can tell it has no romance or erotic life! It's in the small 2nd bedroom.that is also a little den-music( one wall is his orange crates filled with.about 300 vinyl albums. So I want to paint the large window in it with geomstrics PLUS! Because parts of the pattern haven't yet come to me. Your.videos ( the.super stain.blew me away!) have opened up a whole new world to me. Photos in.StU e Thank you. You've changed a whole important project I will.do. It's painting a large existing window in a small bedroom that also reflects my.late husband'S artist at heart, music lover ( one wall is his orange crates filled with about 300 vinyl albums) & an, in his words, "aging hippie". There are music posters & framed 8 a 19's of Tom Waits, John Steinbeck ( we went up.to.Monterey.each.summer), Martin Luther King & Eleanor Roosevelt. The.Beatles ,& Woodstock. It's been a long time making it all fit perfectly. And a very large window ( code Escape Window). Now I know that I need to learn & practice so much more before deciding how to.celebrate US & our family. One great hack.I learned in a craft video is to pick up.diploma frames from the $1 store for.glass! I am more excited to learn something than I've been in six years. Thank.You! a i
