I love this video and I come back to it all the time for my drums I record at home. Usually, they are dynamically all over the place. I get great results with your compression techniques. I sometimes color the "thick" and "punchy" compression with the VCA compressors. Also, I add the Console EQ on "drum bus" setting instead of the overdrive.
Hey Brad! Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad that you're getting such awesome results from this technique. And all that you've outlined is pretty much the process :). As long as you're using the styles of compression correctly, and add some sort of saturation/distortion you'll be 90% of the way there dynamically.
I'm excited about trying these ideas, thanks for the information. Your vocal level is a lot louder than the musical examples (and this is true on all your content) making me ride the volume knob.
Hey Dano - yeah that was something that a producer convinced me was that people (the general public, that is) like their vocals loud. He's worked with Sony artists and is a legit dude. Ever since then, I've been very cognizant to not hide the vocal in my mixes.
@@ObjectiveMixing What he means is that your commentary is too loud compared to the reference audio. We can't hear the reference audio without cranking the volume up and then when you talk again your commentary blows our eardrums out. Need to balance your audio better my dude.
Depending on your kick and snare balance, along with your tonal balance of those - you're probably only triggering off the snare. It's fine if that's what your goal is.
