Mixing Flash and LED Light: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

If flash is your primary light source and you're shooting studio portraits, your first task is usually to ensure that none of the room light is accidentally recorded. However there might be times when you need to work with two types of light in a single scene.
A perfect example is when photographer Gavin Hoey turned his small home studio in a backstage make-up room and lit it with LED light bulbs. In this video he shows you the limits of this set up and how he successfully mixes flash with LED lights. Along the way he shows you how he controls the exposure for two different light types as well as the problems and solution for managing very different color temperatures.

Watching this 3 years later, I do not have anything else to add to existing comments of praise but wanted to point out how well thought out all the props and their placement were, including the red, hopefully not too expensive, strap of a bag hanging lazily over the wooden table. Attention to details or artistic instict? Happy accident?

Is that a brownie camera I see? I just bought one last week and it works! It made the shoot have a more retro feel! Love it! I also just bought a Kodak No 3 model 2B and it works as well!

Love I use fog in my mancave garage. Today I tried shooting with my explorer 400 with LED Yungno sticks. I could not see the colored stick lights only the flash. I tried shooting at a low shutter speed. Will this work?

Gavin, great video! I've a question: I've a similar Glow softbox (mine is 36"X36"). When you placed the CTO inside the box, did you purposely omit the reflector dish so the gel could work better or did you replace it off camera? Cheers!

Hi Ron. I purposely omitted the reflector dish not because of the gel but just because it didn't add anything to my use of the stripbox in this instance

Thanks for the kind words John. That's a silicon case on my Sekonic L-308 and as far as I'm aware it's been discontinued for some time 😢
