Although splats, squirts and cartwheels are coming into style now, it isn't the first time reckless verticality took over the whitewater kayaking world. Despite online garage sales being full of retro-rocker favorites like the Wavesport Xxx and the Dagger Ultrafuge, Liquidlogic and Jackson Kayaks have offered new versions of the 90s style boats. The question for most is what's changed in 20 years. Is the modern outfitting worth it?
Yes, there is a lot of sentimental value to pulling out an old school boat, I am still collecting a few myself, but the outfitting from the 90s and early 2000s is horrible. So first thing first you'll be getting a much more comfortable boat with modern outfitting. Modern whitewater kayaks are also made with superior plastics which are lighter and perform better than the aged plastics found in old school boats.
Going beyond material differences, the Pyranha Ozone, Liquid Logic Homeslice and Jackson Mixmaster also feature modern designs that have much more rocker than old school boats which were focused more on surfing than playing on steep creeks. Moreover the Pyranha Ozone has a modern surf hull similar to the Pyranha Jed which might make the Ozone the best wave surfing slicey boat ever.
