Miyamoto Musashi is one of the most legendary samurai and famed as Japan’s greatest swordsman - undefeated in more than sixty duels. After he escaped death during the Battle of Sekigahara, Musashi became a ronin. Aside from being a swordsman, he was also a philosopher, artist, and well-learned Buddhist. Before he died, Musashi left us with twenty-one principles named Dokkōdō. These are timeless rules that can inspire us today to live well. The majority, if not all, of these rules, help us to establish one thing: ‘focus’.
Focus is the quality of having a concentrated interest or activity on something. Needless to say, ‘focus’ was a crucial component in Musashi’s life, or, what he called ‘the way’, which is a life of ongoing practice. His writings reveal that his lifestyle revolved around restraint, sacrifice, discipline, and not being swayed by pleasure. These virtues were all established by or in support of being able to ‘focus’. Especially when he spent time apart from society, Musashi was only concerned with perfecting his skill, while aiming for enlightenment by the Way of the sword.
This three-part series elaborates on the twenty-one principles from Musashi’s Dokkōdō. The first part explored the first seven principles. This second part will explore how to live a life of ultimate focus, based on the next seven principles. Please note, the elaborations in this video are based on existing philosophies, the author’s interpretations, and reasoning, and are intended to be an inspiration for present-day life.

Einzelgänger I don't know if this is story about focus or not but when i watched The Mahabharata 89' adaptation by Peter Brooks there is a scene where archers on target practice have to tell their master what do they see and they all describe the target and the sorroundings but one archer Arjuna says i see the eye of the bird (target). When asked again he said i can't, i see only the eye. My only tought upon seeing this scene was; FOCUS and that one should do things only in absolute focus and comitement. I mention this to you as an idea for further topic, Mahabharata perhaps. Cheers.

I'm going through a rough separation with my wife of 21 years married, 26 years together. I'll be 42 in a month and we have 3 kids under 10. I seriously can't explain how valuable your collection of videos have been. Just when I felt like everything was ending I understand it's just the beginning. Thanks for these videos they have literally saved my life. Update 11/28/2022: Well damn, I never expected the support I've received here and still getting comments and requests to see where I'm at. @@thatkarbide yea man no shame in any choices you make wether it feels right or wrong. Find ways to physically suffer daily for example running cold showers or anything the ego has tough time doing. I’m sure there’s things you do right now but the more you can evolve your routine the more present you become. Less controlled by thoughts that are anything but the present you feel. No rush tho patience is a necessary skill. Seems like I don’t need to hope you feel better because it seem you’re inevitably already on your journey to it.

Yuck! I hate black coffee lol. I'd spit it out if someone made me drink it. I need to add milk and a bit of sugar. I don't get people who like their coffee black. I mean, do they also eat biscuits with no sugar in them lol. It's like how some people out there like Dr pepper.. it taste SOOO disgusting! I bet some people like it because it's been marketed to them and that they don't actually like it. It's pretty scary knowing how some people can be so easily manipulated. I truly get this. I like the bitterness of the coffee, same with tea, I used to drink it with sugar but these days it feels like it breaks the harmony of the tea. Same with coffee. It is perfect as it is, there is no need to add anything to it. I feel the same about fruit and vegetables too, appreciate the simplicity of things.

@@davidtran6928 if you brew the coffee from real beans and it's some good stuff, French press or something, the "black" coffee can actually have a slightly sweet aromatic taste. You might be referring to black coffee from McDonald's or something, which does indeed taste bad. Another thing to note is my taste buds changed around 24 years old and I began liking more bitter tastes like vinegar, beers, coffee, etc

Miyamoto is a rare example of a Samurai. Most Samurai's in Japan were more or less highly glorified Mercenaries who cared only about money or land by killing and collecting bounties of opponents (Not that different from everyday people except the killing part). Miyamoto is a rare example who embodied the samurai values of honor, something that even high ranking Samurai didn't care much about

I feel as if I’ve been lost in my life recently, just drifting through, slowly giving up and becoming more hopeless. I’m trying to get better, I know I will. But it’s hard. I just keep everything inside, I’m not happy with life, I’m not the person I want to be, and I feel like I won’t ever be that person. You are not alone bro it’s exactly how i feel . Almost 30 and not even close to what image i have in my mind for myself. The untouched potential i have, all the good aspects and habits ruined because of some lifelong problems.But no matter what keep the hope and the change will come. My entire life I’ve lifted weights, I broke all sorts of record at 12+ then started wrestling and won nationals my 3rd year. Trained all day every day for years. I accomplished so much but now I have a broken spine and can’t stand up for more than a Few minutes at one time. Really makes you wonder if being truly great is actually worth it.

@@xnerk Lifting heavy weights or doing heavy things while your body is still in high development. Like with a 12 year old can be detremental to the body. It is best to really start doing it once your body has had the most of it's growth. Even then moderation is still key to preserving your body

I find these rules very similar to those I can see in Seneca’s “Letters”. So I can say that Musashi somewhat was a stoic himself. I’m really happy to become interested in philosophy, since it tries to answer those questions that aren’t popular nowadays, yet the most important in one’s life.

The principle about food is not only about food actually. Human always gets used to anything, to simple, to difficult, to larger, to less. There is no reason to buy expencive food since you can get used to simpler and healthier. We need to think by our minds, not emotions. Especially I liked the 11th point: in all things have no preferences. Only this way you can fully enjoy the life as it is, without unsuccessful trying to change everything, and lets you focus on things that really matter to you I like the video

I've been guided by Eros all my life and it's affected my life in so many ways! Completely took me off track many times but the focus I have on my creative purpose helps keep me pulling myself back on track! The diversions are not in vain, we learn more about ourselves and others in the process. Who knows may be my deeper purpose is to be a lover not a warrior! I think the principles make so much sense for the general basis of a more fulfilled and healthy life but in certain cases may apply to the life purpose of a warrior, different teachings would be found in different life purposes. We're here to experience and learn, to grow wise and pass on our discoveries. None attachment to outcome certainly frees us from all circumstances and helps us to accept what is to expand beyond circumstances and to free our spirit...to be what was intended, applying wise attention to our choices and decisions is a necessity if we're to get through it unaffected by the experience of it all. These teachings should be taught in our early life's, would save a lot of trouble. Travel light...well that seem's to be the real message! Go with the Flow and let nothing bother the spirit...all things come and go, accept the ebb and flow of life!
