It's nice to see authentic and practical kungfu being taught in the West. Keep up the good work!

When ever I see training like this , it reminds me of 12 wasted years when I thought that I was learning how to fight.

Hi, I think if you spent 12 years training and only then found out then that you couldn’t fight... something went horribly wrong. You either didn’t let your instructor know what you wanted out of training, he didn’t know how to fight himself or you were stuck within the confines of your art by not testing it on those outside of it. I was a fairly competent fighter (within reason) in my first year of Muay Thai (3 decades ago), it shouldn’t take 12 years to find out. Now as to what you are seeing in the video... this is a small section of some applications and conditioning, not going full out and not fighting, we work on traditional techniques to keep the historical art alive but also more modern applications, we aren't doing it here with the mindset and intent needed to be a fighter, that is for the few that want it, 90% of martial artists don’t have it or want it, the sacrifice is too great. Out of interest what is a fight from your viewpoint? Interestingly this system has been used for fighting for at least the past century with Lu Zhen Duo being a bodyguard, lei tai fighter, living on the tough streets of Shanghai and living through some tumultuous events in China like the second Sino Japanese war. The problem is most people have never and will never fight and have no idea of how brutal, nasty and vicious it can be and that this brutality and viciousness is exactly what they will need to survive a violent encounter, most don’t want to go there and rightly so because it can haunt you. The martial arts are many things and help people in many different ways, in the modern world fighting is only a part of the equation.

@@borgiskhan Here is the thing. I could fight but that was more because I was strong and aggressive. Yes my Kung Fu training did give me some advantages in precision, balance and "reading" my opponent. My school Coach was against sparing with other schools because of people getting into Ego battles. I learned some 150 techniques and 40 forms to near perfection but I was able to use less than 5 in full contact. My biggest regret is that I used to train first and second year student and instill in them the belief that they could really defend themselves. What is a "fight" ? A fight for me is being able to stop (or start) an Assault, Armed Assault or (stopping only) a Terrorist attack to the best of my abilities . By the way ,just by knowing how to behave has stopped an altercation on more than 1 occasion. To this end I train (mostly 1 on 1 ,privately ) in Firearms, Kali, Bodyguard combatives, and a combination of Wrestling and boxing . I have seen violence and it is fast , ugly and rarely bare hands. I understand that few want to train it ,that is why I have built a system with some real experts that works(I hope) for me . My first Judo class was when I was 9 years old , 59 years ago, like a good whiskey it takes a long time to reach maturity. 😁

Wondering, how would you ever learn to hit, if you never really hit and just pretend to hit?
@borgiskhan
@borgiskhan 3 года назад
You can't, you need to practice techniques, work on pads, bags, trees, partners and spar. Most importantly you need to go out and fight. That being said I have met people that could fight well (not so much in the ring) and hit like a truck with little or no training.

@@borgiskhan Is cement but with boxing gloves cool?
@borgiskhan
@borgiskhan 3 года назад
@@junejuly6060 Cement with boxing gloves? Not sure what you mean? Do you mean hitting a wall or cement while wearing boxing glove? If you have nothing else then maybe... you need to be careful hitting solid objects because if the object doesn't move you will get some of the energy/power you put into the punch bounce back into your body which can damage your joints and internal organs. Hitting solid objects need to be built up to, start hitting softly even with soft objects. I have used a wall and big 16 ounce boxing gloves, putting dots on the wall for targeting but I was only using it for targeting, hitting softly. It's best to get a punch or kick bag, then you can work on hitting with power.

@@borgiskhan Yeah I meant hiting cement wall with big boxing gloves but not too hard. Full power can break my hand. I dont feel my joints damaged since I have done this b4. But yeah I still think I must check it out in case they are lol. I have pretty strong hands and arms it seems

Why does this look soooo....practical? Lol looks very similar to western bare knuckle boxing to a point, but they couldn't kick

We were lucky that our instructor was old school, so when he was back in China they did spar behind closed doors and fight, his father was a bodyguard and one time, all China lei tai champion back in the 1920's. As students we were happy to rediscover what the Chinese martial arts were really about by moving away from the limitations put on TCMA by the cultural revolution and getting some great, tough and practical training.

@@borgiskhan Thank you for replying! So it's true communism is the cause for the downfall of TCM, and now they're being beating by amateur MMA fighters. A real shame.

@@borgiskhan Another question If you don't mind. For those straight vertical fist punches, are you using first 2 knuckles or the last 3?
@borgiskhan
@borgiskhan 4 года назад
@@navigatingel6104 They certainly didn't help, they tried to destroy the martial arts because they saw it as old fashioned and backwards which meant that martial artists had to leave, quit or hide their practice or suffer being badly treated or even killed. Then we have contemporary wushu which was another way of controlling the martial arts and changing it into a nice pretty form of exercise which has created some fantastic athletes but it lost the martial intent. Now the government are trying to save face by telling the fake masters to stop showing themselves up and trying to fight. I don't think the Chinese martial arts are ruined because at least some of them still have the fighting elements in them, but it has become technique orientated which is the opposite of what you want when fighting, fighting is simple, TCMA's are not (the CMA's complicated nature makes them fantastic for mental and physical growth but that's a whole other topic.) But that can change.
