The awesome Major T gave us a tour out at Shrivenham and I grabbed a snippet! I could listen to this gent all day, he knows a ton and I'm very thankful for the opportunity to come by and film and learn.
Special thanks to Ed Francis for setting up the trip for the WoT video production team and myself to visit and film this summer. What a treat!
Keep up with me and the latest in armored adventures:

Great to see the great Otto Carius mentioned here! I knew Otto as our friendly pharmacist in Herschweiller-Pettersheim, Germany, where my family lived from 1990-1993. He talked about being a tanker on the Eastern Front, but never let on to the magnitude of his accomplishments. Years later I was enthralled by "Tigers In The Mud", and feel even more privileged to have known Otto.

@boris boris I haven't read that much about him, mostly just know the name and that he's one of the german tank aces. But as far as I know he was never a nazi. He served in the army, not the the political branch of the nazi party the Waffen-SS unlike (among others) Michael Wittmann.

Wow, O my God. I worked with a German machinist named Otto Schaefer back in the 1990's. He was a panzer gunner in WWII. He was on the Russian front and ended up on the western front. He told me many of his experiences. I distinctly remember him calling the Russian T34's "Mickey Mouse" because of the way they looked with their hatches open, like Mickey Mouse ears. Otto was in a Panther when his tank was hit. He thinks it was from planes firing rockets. He ha terrible scars on his throat and arms from the fire as he rescued a fellow crewman and getting out himself. I often wonder if Otto knew some of these famous tankers.

Tank battle badges were for engagements rather than kills, as the name would suggest. When Otto Carius was asked how many kills he had, he didnt know as he credited the gunners with kills but estimated he was involved in cica 100 kills, a phenomenal achievement. As is going from enemy to adviser.

Yeah... And the major made a good point. It took actual combat experience to realise that a hatch that lifts up is an eye catcher when entrenched. These days, with tech and engineering nerds designing things, without having any real combat experience being that there is no wars going on, and doing so for the kinds of future battlefield engagements that haven't even happened yet, a lot of the current design elements that are being introduced could prove to be useless if the time ever comes for the more modern equipment to go to war.

At one point in his Tiger 1 he momentarily bowed down to get a light (of his cigarette) from His gunner (Heinz Kramer) In that moment a Russian AT round took off the Commanders cupola. SQUAD TANK, T-72 Direct front, 300 meters AT MY COMMAND.....FIRE! Killing tanks with a TOW missile isn't simple like video games would show. Try tracking a tank in 115 degree heat, flies and sweat bees trying to get in any hole your body has and maybe you got a bad sinus inflammation coming on from driving at high speeds through a nasty storm. And all before you fire the missile you have to do a systems self check, make sure the night sight is collimate day to the day sight and God help you if you damaged the computer-traversing unit umbilical cable by jamming up one of the 50 small pins because you cross threaded it or didn't ensure it was clear of debris. Or you could be fighting in the middle of winter where you can barely feel your fingers because you're moving fast to get ready for the engagement and you only slept a couple hours in the past 3 days of fighting. And once I fire a missile, I must move my vehicle to the alternate then again after my next missile launch and after moving three times I need to withdraw because my luck will run out and the enemy by now knows my general position so I can expect an express delivery of indirect fire or CAS, either of which is contrary to good health. If a ZSU 23-4 gets wind of where I am it's a bad day, that thing is a priority kill and if possible, we need to engage it from the flank, that's why I hold my fire and ensure my wing man next to me has a flank shot because if I fire at its front, the crew is scanning forward and I'll give away my location. Even though the TOW has a smokeless ABOL motor (All Burn On Launch) there's still some small signature. And nothing with the TOW system is lightweight, it's a pain in the ass to move that thing around so if you're weak it only makes life worse. Anti-tank teams have to be almost as sneaky as a sniper team, we rely on concealment because we lack armor. When engaging a tank we aim for the turret ring, Soviet tanks use a single lip ring retention on their turrets so if you get a penetration the turrets pop off pretty easy as it brews up. If it doesn't penetrate, it'll usually distort the turret ring causing it to bind up and become a Stug. So I'd think it'd be a lot more realistic if these video games and simulators went a bit further on the simulation by cranking up the heat to where your balls are sweating off and you're scared to touch the exterior parts of the vehicle because it'll burn your skin! Then get a zillion flies and stuff those in your simulator box and let the fun begin! Lol.

If the tank is sufficiently fucked up that you need to GTFO it's probably every man for himself so you go out the door you've got to yourself, not to mention that the tank might be burning at another door, or it might be tweaked from an impact and seized, or otherwise untenable. If the tank's fucked but you're OK, there's good odds that your hatch or door is OK too. X position out Y hatch is not going to be so useful a measure of comparison.

Mjr?!? It's Maj you lunatic!
@fatdad64able
@fatdad64able 4 года назад
I'm going to give this a thumbs down and here is why. Anytime I see the chieftain interact with other people, even with Sofilein he immediately starts comparing "dick length". I don't know what it is with him. Everybody knows he has lots of knowledge on tanks, but he has to confirm "I already knew" any time someone explains something. This to me is extremely unpleasant behaviour. I too have my doubts whether it was Otto Carius coined the term "Mickey Mouse ears" on the T34's hatches, but for the sake of the vid. Let the man talk or don't post the vid at all if you're not happy with it. But please don't try at any given opportunity to impress or intimidate your counterpart with your knowledge and your "been there, done that" attitude. Secondly, whether or not Carius hat that many "confirmed kills" is questionable alltogether, because who kept counts? And what do you count? Usually as a Panzerkommandant you're not the one firing. I don't want to downplay their "achievements" , but they themselves repeatedly admitted that they had other things to do than keeping counts. Also, whether or not calling Carius an extremely nice guy is making me cringe. Many Nazis were extremely nice guys in day to day interaction. I live about two Kilometer (as the crow flies) from Herrschweiler-Pettersheim, where Carius had his Pharmacy "Tigerapotheke" over many decades. I met him some time in 1987, I believe, during my time at Bundeswehr. Still, after reading his book, which he admittedly wrote relatively shortly after WW2, it is without any doubt clear that he was a nazi ...at the time. Whether he had changed his mind leter on, I don't know. So these are the reasons for my "thumbs down". Nick Moran's unpleasant ways and Mjr Mouat's fanboy behaviour towards O.Carius paired with common Panzer anecdotes/ inaccuracies. The info on the hatch turning sideways was very interesting though. But if chieftain had similar issues he should consider not posting the vid to begin with. If you find any grammar, or orthography errors, you may keep them as English is not my native tongue.
@Sofilein
@Sofilein 4 года назад
I hear your opinions on the content and I respect them. I have Carius's book and I've definitely for myself considered the points you made with regards to his kill count and his attitude. But respectfully, this is not the Chieftain's video and he didn't post it, I filmed it and posted it here, on my channel. Didn't edit out any discourse as it's not my interest, I like to keep the interactions as they were, so long as it stays relevant to a subject for video (so it's not just folks rambling). There are very often some issues with live video as mistakes and inaccuracies are easily made without rehearsal and as channel owner I accept responsibility for my guests. But the channel is mine and not the Chieftain's, I liked filming the snippets from this day quite a bit :) thank you for the long comment with your viewpoints and your feedback.
@fatdad64able
@fatdad64able 4 года назад
@@Sofilein Wow, sorry for me not paying attention to the most obvious thing. "Whose vid is it?" I automatically jumped to the conclusion it was chieftain's and coupled with my impression that he felt the need to correct/add information I just couldn't understand why he'd post it in the first place. So please accept my apologies. I understand that there's probably no script nor is there a director or rehersals to a vid like this, so in the end you've gotta take the vid and the content the way it was filmed at the time. I already voiced my opinion on O. Carius and his "fans", so enough on that topic from my side. Thank you for taking the time to answer and clarify and even more for sharing your opinion on certain issues and their many facets.
@jameschristensen1055
@jameschristensen1055 2 года назад
'@@fatdad64able ', yes, you jumped to conclusions with admirable alacrity. If only there were an award for that. Of course, the truth is that Herr Carius was the epitome of an 'officer and a gentleman'. During the war he was steadfast and courageous; he did his duty as a soldier. And he gained a reputation for resourcefulness and coolness under fire - prized characteristics among men in battle. After the war he was a pillar of his community. In 1995, together with several US Army comrades, I was fortunate enough to meet him, and we were honoured to be invited into his home. Indeed, he did strike us as a man very correct in his manners; at first somewhat reserved, but far from unfriendly. We had coffee and cakes, served by his lovely wife, and, finding much common ground - for we were soldiers, all - we got on very well. It was a memorable occasion. Herr Carius had a great sense of propriety; he was also optimistic, industrious, and compassionate. One simply cannot imagine him stooping to spew streams of navel-gazing, gratuitous negativity. The man who does is a weak sort of soldier.

@@jameschristensen1055 Dear Mr. Nazi fanboy. Foreigners, especially (and I am going tomtake a guess that you are one) are so easily impressed by nazi history, it is disgusting. It's dark, sinister and evil. I can only guess here that for the same reasons people admire Darth Vader the most in the entire Star Wars franchise, lol. It is so laughable and so pathetic, really.^^ They come to Germany and the first place they go is "Linderhof", a place I didn't even know existed until I was almost thirty years old, because there are so many *nice* places to see in my country instead. On Carius I can only say that I read his book (written after the war) and although it is not filled with nazi ideas to the brim, he is pretty clear which ideology is closest to him. I have met him in later years and he seemed a "nice old uncle". Enough to fool you. I am just glad, to never got into politics with him. It may have been an unpleasant surprise. Or maybe not, who knows. The comment about micky mouse ears and turret down positions should be compulsory viewing for tank designers. I look at todays tanks with remote operated weapons mounts, armour surrounding weapons mounts, active defense sensors etc etc and they all stick up so high above the turret roof that a good turret down position will be close to impossible to achieve.
@markfryer9880

Agreed. While on the one hand they are trying to protect the crew by keeping them inside the vehicle and using remote weapons stations at the same time they are increasing the risk for the crew by increasing the visible height of the vehicle and it's siloette. Having said all that, roof space on a turret is at a premium.

Probably not in the same battle or on the same day maybe, did you listen to what he said about him?

That would be over his entire career.

I think what the good major said was over the course of his career as a tanker. Accumulated.

@@Bulbagaba992 Even that is not true as Carius tally is at 150 tanks for his entire career.

@Herbert Erdferkel Where is the Statue or remembrance plate of Carius in Germany? Is a school named after him or even a casern? Is it allowed to have his picture in a german casern?

@@minimax9452 You dont need schools and streets named after you to express the gratitude of a war hero. O Carius is a legend of his own kind. As long as the world remembers Tiger Tanks they will remember O Carius. As for the likes of u , well get a good doctor or good book.( perhaps Tigers in Mud)
