Interesting to see the revisions to the later car. Back in the day, my father had an L reg 1600XL. inside the car was black vinyl seats, no rev counter, while under the bonnet was a cross flow engine, and no servo assist brakes.
I could never understand why Ford did not fit a matching wooden glove-box lid on the XL's. It was a bit like Ford rubbing your nose in it that you could not quite stretch to an 'E', nevertheless it's a lovely example lads.👍 I often used to find the odd screws, fixings and bits in the new cars while carrying out pre-delivery inspections.
That dashboard brings back a few memories of the late 70's and early 80's and the succession of Mk. 3, 4 and 5 estates we had. Agree it's less stylish than the sloped version but cleaner and more ergonomically friendly. Nice to see a mid-range XL surviving too. Chris has scored a great car there.
Whumph!!! The sound of my jaw hitting the floor when you said the fleet was for sale and all the spares were gone. That XL is so lovely. Love the GXLs but it's nice to see a lower spec. My first car, a '71 L spec, dressed as a GXL back in '82. Good times.
I facelifted the dash of my facelift MK 3 to a MK 5. The heater controls dropped down to where the radio was positioned. I then installed the MK 5 blower box which now had 2 extra center vents where the heater controls were previously fitted. The radio was then fitted inside the MK5 plastic center console which fitted over the MK3 ashtray. The MK4 stayed the same as the MK3. It was the MK5 where they introduced the extra center vents and, as such, had to reposition the radio.
Great video - reminds me of my late dads last brand new car he bought was a L reg sloped dash 1600 XL auto in solid blue ( similar to BL pagent blue) same wheel embelishers etc his had tan embossed vinyl seats which were a nightmare in hot summer of 76! Shame had rusted badly by then on front valence RMD809L long gone now I always want a MK5 ( or ‘80) 2.3 Ghia estate - never going to happen now I’m 50 and just can’t afford Dad later had a MK4 2.0 GL auto estate in signal yellow bought at 4 yrs old from main dealer but soon became red oxide primer sadly and tailgate slam panel was almost non existent with rubber seal flapping about as no metal left to attach to :-(
OMG! I owned NPW 983P between Aug 84 and Autumn '85. A 2.0 XL auto. She had 66,000 miles on her and went like a dream. I did a road trip from London to Loch Ness, Glen Coe, Loch Lomond, the Lake District, Blackpool and back home, 1600 miles of Mk 3 Heaven, and back in time for Live Aid. Loved that car, first one I had to join the ton-up club in. Happy days.
Love the mk3 cortinas, I had a metallic green 2 door GXL with black vinyl roof when I was 19 way back, wish I still had it. My dad had a very similar car to the one on video but a 76 white L model. First car we had with cloth seats.,brand new. Happy memories. 👍
Regarding the missing swirl sealer in the back wheel well, i think it was meant to be unsealed, as i remember opening one, once after a heavy rain with a leaking boot. i think it was meant as a drain plug, then after undoing the tap the water flashed away then after a gentle wipe i fixed the tap in place. Correct me if I'm wrong. Great car by the way, very clean car. Congrats Chris to me.
Nice little gem you have Chris👌 .. great video Pete👍.. I was thinking carpet on the bottom of the doors of the 2000E .. I would of never guessed colour coded dash but never mind they maybe a lot of differences fantastic car for sure 😍👍
My 2nd car same model only mine was white on an M reg and I friggin loved it , I tried to find it in the hope of buying it back last year but it had gone to the great garage in the sky in 96 😢 what a bummer . That’s a beautiful car I’d really like something like that 👌👍
I've been using a product called "Fluid Film" on my 1996 Fiat Ducato (notorious rustbucket). It is a protective cavity wax based upon the grease from sheep's wool. Nice thing is, it doesn't evaporate or get hard over time. After 4 years it still seems to protect very well, even in places where the metal had already gone quite thin. I will also use it on my Granada estate, once i finally get to do that car up... Ater treating with the Fluid film, the car will smell a bit sheepy, but that will only be for a few weeks :-)
Most blue RC engine came with FoMoCo distributors and Black RC car car came with Bosch distributors and were German built cars., with GN in the chassis number as opposed to BB.
The dizzy's from Bosch may have been fitted more often on BB cars from late MK4 cars( 1978/9 )as Industrial disputes at Fords Motorcraft assembly at Enfield & Belfast plants ment that supplies of Motorcraft units were running low! Some crossflow MK2 Escorts were using Lucas 45D as a factory fit alternative to the usual Motorcraft dizzy's.
Bosch stuff was found on German built Fords but Cologne didn't built the Mark Tree. But the Ford assembly plant in Holland built lots and with Bosch stuff. Most Dutch Mark Trees were 1.3 and 1.6 Billy Basics and were identifiable by the DECOR badge on the boot. Facelift cars aren't as fashionable now as the pre 9/73 originals but they were much better really. The 1600 Pinto was a sweet engine. I ran 1600 Mark 4/5 Courteenahs for 5 years or so and I remember the sound of the engine and box. The 1600 wasn't as brisk but I preferred them to the 2000. Lovely gearbox. Twin choke 32/36 Weber an EXCELLENT PLAN ideally with a 2000 cam (same as 16GT). I've had all four wisdom teeth out. They're B*ST*RDS.
Greetings from Northern Ireland she's a Minter and what a colour an amazing car Chris, I can see this in the 1976 Summer heatwave waiting for its owner to pick up! I was in Blackpool a number of weeks back and keeping my fingers crossed that I'd see Swampy, Bramble or Ruby or Chris's car perhaps next time! I passed a building that looked like it had been a large dealership. It was on the left side of Church Street down towards Devonshire Square. I wonder when it closed and was it a Ford dealership? Both you and Chris could enlighten me.
I bought a new 2000 S Cortina in 1979. The exhaust rotted through within a couple of years and oil leaked from the head gasket soon after. That was a big disappointment but at least it did go very well.
Ooo, a 76 model. With a wooden dash too and the long console with a clock, like my old GT. I think Ford just raided the parts stores in 76. X¬D Before the Mk4 came out. My 78 Mk4 GL had the same dash and console too. My 75 XL has a black vinyl, slightly padded, dash and black vinyl interior. I also have those plastic strips in the rain gutter under the boot lid. I thought a previous owner had put them on. Sticking a twin choke Weber from a 2 Litre 'tina on the 1.6 will make a lot of difference as my mate discovered back in the 80's when I put one on his 1.6L Mk4. Any chance I can have the axle for mine Pete? haha. My axle goes Grr Grr Grr Grr Grr. It sounds like there is somebody in the boot sawing a block of wood! lol You don't want a 2000E, you want a GT with the factory stiffened suspension. Mine went around corners like it was on rails, but a mates' 2000E was like a boat in comparison. "I'm gonna get back to a real car,... oh yeah". and points to an Alfa. X¬D
My dads first car was a mk3 red cortina xl 2000cc with red cortina logo in the back window and gt seats also gxl door cards and mud flaps with a white cortina logo . When I have enough if I see a 1974 red xl with the red cortina logo in the back window I'll buy it
I'm not absolutely sure, but it seems that Pete knows a little bit about Cortinas. This one is a jewel honestly, unlike the shitty Astra. And a manual, sweet! Congrats, Chris! So clean I wouldn't even eat a burger inside.
even though its a septic motor swampy's steering wheel is the wrong side of the car.Go find a taunus in canada thats the same car but at least the steering wheel will be on the correct side of the car for you.
No way this can stay outside!! get that bloody astra outside under a car cover. Pete needs to give this baby the proper cavity wax treatment to keep it good.
