Get your Southbend Stage 2 Endurance Clutch with Single Mass Flywheel*: click.linksynergy.com/link?id...
In this video, guest Neil Campos - an ex Volkswagen Service Tech, installs Miles' new clutch! We go in depth on an install of a South Bend Stage 2 Endurance clutch (KTSIF-HD-OCE) capable of holding 450 ft-lb of torque. The same concept holds true for any GTI clutch, for most MK5 and MK6 Golf/GTI, with some differences for the AWD Golf R. We do not recommend any extreme beginner tackle this install on their own, as we got help ourselves. There are definitely harder installs out there, but clutches are not easy. We recommend doing a lot of research prior to tackling such a job, as well as having all of the right tools. This install is completely possible on jack stands but is made much easier with a lift. We also do not recommend bench-pressing the entire transmission out of the car like we did, but let it be known it’s totally possible. Some notes: make sure the pressure plate is facing the right direction, torque everything correctly, don’t forget to bleed the clutch after the install.

I liked this video so much I'm going to replace my clutch just for fun, as there is nothing wrong with it I will take it out, then just put it right back in for practice, in case I have to do this for real someday I might do it with the motor too

robert baker ha! Enjoy. While you’re in there, I’d suggest the clutch delay valve delete! Look it up if you haven’t heard of it - definitely improved clutch feel and response for me.

This video was a god send. I did a complete clutch and flywheel swap and lowered the car only to find I'd not put the wheels on. Thankfully 20:06 pointed me in the right direction or I'd have been without the car for another day

A couple of years ago I replaced the slave cylinder on my MK5 GTI (TFSI). Surprisingly this so identical that I couldn't find any differences. I watched this video for a refresher since I'm looking to go Ko4 turbo. I am definitely going to need an upgraded clutch. Thank you guys for all you do!

thanks for posting this. I have to do this on my wife's TDI SOON. Having done a lot of clutches in Japanese cars, this actually looks WAY easier. Just like everything I've had to do on this car so far, it seems like VW really made a lot of stuff easier to work on and access on the Golf than what I am used to with modern Japanese cars.

@@GTIModBlog they are lower maintenance if you buy Honda or Toyota definitely, but they tend to cram a lot of stuff into a compact space with no regard to said maintenance. it's all about production assembly. for example, some differences between this MK6 clutch job and doing one on a modern civic. on the civic there are no axle flanges, or lower ball joint bolts. so to pull the transmission you have to pop the balljoint out of the knuckle, and then get the axle out of the transmission, so instantly draining oil everywhere. no controlled easy unbolt the axle and then one easy bolt for the flange. On the civic, it's not just unbolting a couple easy to get to mounts and starter and drop the trans right out the bottom. instead you are having to drop the subframe to get the trans out, so you're also going to need an alignment afterwards. But ya to put it simply, so far whenever I've had to work on the VW I've been happy to find that VW seems to have thought about the fact that someone would be working on it and I can get to individual systems a lot quicker and easier.

Question so I just installed a single mass fly wheel on my GLI and now it's throwing check engine lights for random misfires? Is there some way for me to have this fixed other than putting a dual mass in it??

Most likely an unrelated issue. Check your coilpacks and spark plugs.

Great video... Do you have any experience with installing a refurbished South Bend clutch? I'm on the fence about buying a stage 3 endurance that has been refurbished by SB along with surfaced flywheel. Curious if it should be expected to perform as new and last as long, with similar driving style. Thanks

I have no experience with refurbished clutches. The idea of them kinda scares me, but if it's done by SB (does it have any sort of warranty?) I would probably expect it to be fine. I've owned plenty of refurbished devices before and they've been fine.

This is a manual transmission car man, hence the clutch. No torque converter here.

How long did this install take? Great video, answered a lot of my questions. Been going back and forth if i should bring it to a shop or try and do it myself. My biggest issue is its my daily... and i dont have another form of transportation at the moment.

For Neil it was about 45 minutes, but I imagine it wouldn't take you more than 4-5 hours with little experience figuring it out yourself. Always stressful trying to fix your daily in a set amount of time, especially if you can't get a finnicky bolt undone. I would say give it a try, be ready to give up if it's going to take you too long. Might as well spend a few hours learning a bit and need to take it to a mechanic than not try at all!

Is the torque correct on the flywheel bolts? Factory manual says 60NM + 1/4 turn stretch. Has the flywheel flown off yet? I was following this guide and torqued it to 75nm like in the video, I wanna fix it but I can't be fucked taking my gearbox out again.

The stock flywheel bolt is indeed 60 + 1/4 but I read this one was 75 online. FYI I also recall the stage 3 clutch is something ridiculous like 114nm. I wouldn’t sweat it man. Half the torques in this video we didn’t even use a torque wrench for and the car never had an issue. Happy driving.

It's definitely there. People review it with mixed results. Mine got quieter as time went on, some peoples get louder. In general, I think South Bend clutches are known for their chatter in comparison to others. Honestly, I like the noise. It's not too loud, and I think of it as just another 'racy' noise like the turbo spool noise. It's audible at idle with the AC on (windows up) and audible with the AC off if your windows are down. But it's not very bad.

Awesome video, thank you for making it. Quick question, why do you remove both axles if the housing for the clutch itself is next to the driver-side? I'm sure there is a good reason but I am not clear why you need to remove the axle on the passenger side.

It's not entirely necessary but makes it easier when doing the job alone, because the axle can make trans reinstall difficult. The passenger axle can fight you when you try to push the trans back on :)

Great video! I'm looking to do this on my MK6 golf R soon, and have yet to see anything close to as detailed as this video. I hear it requires a little more work (dropping subframe... etc.) what is your opinion on that? Is it possible to pull it without dropping the subframe?

paul ciupei Hey, it was quite the learning experience. This video helped a lot though, one thing you will have to do with the r is drop the subframe, and remove the driver side control arm. This is needed to make room for the extra rear drive shaft flange for the awd system.Make sure you buy new subframe and engine mount bolts as well, as they are torque to yield. You can pick them up at any vw parts store. Only other advice is have patience, buy a socket set of 12 points, and label everything you take off in baggies. Took me 12 hours with power tools. Of course there were pizza and beer breaks, but make sure not to rush it.

A little bit in first gear especially when engine braking and additional with the AC on. I had a loud exhaust that drowned out pretty much all other noise so I could only hear it with the windows down

Hey guys! I know I'm way late to the party, but I have a few questions. This is the same as a clutch replacement for a Mk6 R right? I'm looking to replace mine myself. Also How long in total hours did this take you guys?

I can’t confidently say it’s the same as an R, given the differences in drivetrain. From my recollection, the clutches are interchangeable, so take that as you will. This took Neil (a full time auto tech) about 45 minutes however I would dedicate 4-6 hours if you’re doing it for the first time. Most auto shops would quote 3-4+ hours for this job. We spent about 1.5 hours on this as we put the clutch disc on backwards due to faulty labeling by South Bend, which was frustrating, but Neil is such a pro that it was hardly a hiccup.

I love the feeling of being able to do my own shit but if the clutch is extremely hard to install I would be more willing to pay for an installation.

@@Ragged.09 it’s a very involved install and we paid Neil to do it (and we recorded it for this video), so yeah, in my opinion, I’m glad I paid him to do it. I didn’t have the tools or expertise to do it confidently in a small amount of time. I did virtually all other modifications myself, so there’s that. Dropping the transmission specifically was really daunting to me, and I can’t say I would ever want to do it all by myself.

Ivan Vega very similiar. I have an 08 fsi, did it in 4 hours no lift on jackstands. Best advice is too mark everything and take your time.

The clutch & SMFW unit itself should cost somewhere from $1,100 to $1,300, and install will be free if you follow this video! But, a quality install from a professional is a bit more dependent on location and options available, could run you between $400 and $800+. Where are you located?

You’ll have to call your local dealer and ask for a quote but most will charge $2-3k for install. Some dealers accept customer supplied parts but definitely confirm this when you call. The pedal becomes more firm and feels like a nicer performance car (think BMW). - DB

Hi, Philo! Love your car, and enjoy hearing everything you have to say on the MQB Facebook group. Excellent question. I - along with most mechanics - would recommend using the factory support points and a proper bar. However, Black Forest Industries claims supporting from the oil pan won't cause you too much trouble. Just use a pad or block of wood between the jack and the oil pan as they are composite and prone to cracking (as we all know). - Deren

I got mine out by myself. Never tune your mk7 if you don't have stage 2 clutch. I fry my clutch and I'm working on change it. I got everything out by myself without any help. Anyone can do it but you need the right tools and motivation

What tune did you go with? Stage 1, even stage 2 will rarely ruin a stock clutch from my understanding. I know people on the mk6 platform with stage 1/2 cars and 100k mile stock clutches. Did you lug it at high speed, high gear?

It was very quick for Neil - I would say around 60-90 minutes all in (we made a mistake the first time and so this film is from the second go-around). I think shops will charge significantly more, for at least 3 hours of shop time. I was quoted I believe $700 or $800 to get it done at a local performance shop that I trusted.

Sami Hamady I basically learned stick on the stock clutch of my GTI, it had ~35k on stock clutch and had been tuned the whole time so it gave out then. An upgraded clutch is harder to use as the pedal gets heavier and the clutch grabs harder, but it can take more of a beating. I would honestly say stick with OEM clutch if you’re not going to tune the car, but if you do plan to add power in the future, it’s worth upgrading to a stage 1-2 clutch

We spent maaaybe four hours total. That included putting the clutch on backwards and then assembling the entire car only for it to stall. About 2.5 hours first time then to redo it only 1.5 hours because it was so recent. Also included bleeding the clutch twice (first and second time) and also removing the bleeder block restrictor.

By putting the clutch backwards you mean the torsion disc facing the pressure plate instead of facing the SMF? I am in the process of installing Sachs SMF kit and for some reason they did not specify on the plate whic side should face the pressure plate. Can you please help me?

oh my god! backwards clutch disk!? after All of that!? UGHHH!!!!! tecnically that's like the the novice move of all things to overlook. I've done that, almost actually with my friend when we did a mk2 clutch and some how it wasn't aligned and the clutch was seized. we couldn't start the car. had to redo the whole job. but we did it in like 1/3rd of the job. But this design of car looks like ALOT more work than the old ones. Yeah, there's the turbo hoses and the extra brackets holding shit on, and the stuff with the drive shafts. I'm sure the harness removal, the clutch cylinder lines, shift linkage and cooling hoses and waht not, all tHAT BS is in the way. I just bought a 2009 passat 2.0t CC... the clutch is working but making a ringing/howling sound when it's half way engaged. it will be time for me to do exactly what you're doing here. Not looking forward to this, but I will be brave after seeing you just did on this car. Thanks for the video!!

Rome Edwards clutch kits range from like $900-1,500 and if you count labor it could be $400-1,000ish to be done professionally. Quite a range depending on how you do it. I’d get a quote from a professional if you aren’t sure.

debating between an ACT, Clutchmaster or southbend for my boosted DSM. how you like the SB?

Not sure how DSM are different, but I love my SB. I've heard that it makes more noise than other clutches but I really enjoy it so far. I'm not read up on others but I can speak for my own, it's holding up super well after about 4,500 miles.

Not entirely sure... did a new one come preinstalled in the new flywheel? Either way, the car only had 27,000mi. Clutch job was necessary because of the tuning and drive style.

You'd think by now companies would figure out how to make a goddamned clutch that can last 150K miles. Absolutely mind boggling that someone hasn't come up with a reliable and easy to mass produce oil bathed multi-plate solution that still has driveability. That kind of setup would last as long as the engine if you took care of it.
