MK7 Golf GTD Review | Is it a proper hot hatch? 

I love my gtd, looks beautiful in the carbon grey. Never seen a diesel turn so many heads. I dont think the red suits it, it's more a GTI spec

Really enjoyed this review. It’s nice to hear someone talk realistically about cars. 180bhp is enough for most people but most reviews don’t understand that.

The GTD wasn’t designed to be a hot hatch. What it is though is a refined, grown up car with a serious amount of torque if you want it. With the pricing of GTD and Gti being similar I don’t see the point in comparing - people don’t buy the GTD to be a GTi visa versa

I was the same until I drove the 2.l scirroco , then had to drive the gtd, now I'm getting one. It's only when you drive one of these cars do you "get" it.

Love my Mk7 GTD

I had a MK3 Leon FR for 4 years. I always overlooked the GTD as I felt it was just an overpriced version of what I had......however.....when I drove one....I was converted. They do not feel anyway the same to drive. The independent rear suspension makes the Golf wayyyyyy more comfortable and composed to drive. Leon is very firm. The toys like ACC/heated bucket seats; extra 34hp plus strong residuals made me change to a MK7 GTD. I've been converting other Leon FR drivers since. Next car for me is MK7.5 DSG....drove the DSG recently and it is brilliant. I thought Id hate the auto but you really will be converted when you drive. Mixed driving I get 45 to 50mpg. Ironically, Id say the Leon FR is sharper in the corners but the offset is a firm and crashy ride. The Leon in a pothole you would think you have wrecked all before ya. Just make sure any owners get rid of the silica bag from the coolant, will break your heart!

Yes loved my 7.5 only sold it as we decided to trade in 2 cars for 1 as had a company car arriving and that’s and that’s a golf 8 style, inside not a patch on the old model

The gte in the diesel version

I'll be honest and say I'm the same as you Anthony regarding the Golf thing, ie I don't get it plus whilst I know they weren't the only ones to be done for emissions I blame VW for their bringing diesels down which as a diesel driver myself is very annoying. It's also identical under the skin to second hand Skoda VRS TDI that you drove a few weeks ago.

I also wouldn't map it without uprating the clutch, gearbox and indeed brakes.

The dsg automatic transmission is superb.

always thought this car was a bit stuck in the middle. Not really fast enough to be a hot hatch and not really economical to be a diesel family runaround. It's basically a cheaper way of getting a sweet body kit on an otherwise sensible car.

Wrong gear box. With that amount of torque the DSG box is better at choosing the right gear than you are.

The VW Golf is the most boring looking car in the world. It still looks the same as it did years ago. It really is a shed on wheels. Boring , boring , boring.. and that's why you hate it Anthony..I don't care how dependable it is. Jesus even the Corolla looks better now. And that's saying something. Pls, stop buying them..aghhh !!

“Miles per Gallon”? I thought this was “CarsIreland”? Why are you using British Imperial measurements? Really off-putting. There’s a market for good Irish car content, but only if it caters to Ireland. We use metric here last time I checked.

NEVER BUY MANUAL DIESEL , YOU BUY DSG DIESEL AND MANUAL PETROL . who goes for manual in a car that revvs to 3500 and goes flat
