Loud and annoying creaking noise when turning left. Traced to loose 13mm bolts connecting one of the sway bar bushing brackets. All tightened up and the noise is now gone. See here: • MK7 GTI - Bolt that ca...
Had a noise just like this and found that it was my sway bar connecting rod. It actually had a little bend in it and when I replaced it the noise was gone.
I have a similar noise ...but only at slow speeds and just after starting up. Once I get some speed and have been driving for a few minutes I don’t have this noise. Was this the same for you?
Those bolts are stretch bolts. They need to be replaced as they are designed as one time use, to only be stretched once, they will continue to loosen ever time. Buy a deadset kit, or replace the bolts, torque and stretch.
Thanks for the input. They are still rock-solid tight since I torqued them down. Same goes for the suspension bolts (when replacing the springs and dampers). I'm not saying everyone should disregard that they are stretch bolts, but I have reused them successfully. The only bolts I never reuse are the front strut knuckle pinch bolts. Not debating what should/shouldn't be done... just what I do personally.
I have the same issue with my 2015. Been in twice now and I go to pick it up tomorrow. Said they can't find it. Sounds just like this. Where about are these bolts?
Clayton Hunter Hi, have them check the bolts that mount the subframe. The subframe is directly below front sway bar. The ones that were loose on mine were the 13mm bolts that attach the front sway bar brackets to the subframe.
On my Golf 7, there is a knock on the front suspension on the right side when you drive from 5-30 km/h, it is heard best there, after that it is less. Knocking, knocking on a rough road, on small crossings, on a policeman lying down, I will slow down, sometimes I hear knocking on a flat road as well. Went to several service centers, the masters don't know what they are hearing, they say everything is ok. Do you know what it could be and how you solved the problem on the car? I can turn the end link left and right with my hands, should it be that way or not?
And now I can hear that sound when I start engine, the same second I hear knock-clunk. 🙄 In driving on low speed something knocking-clunking on small bumps. But nobody knows what was it. Driving me crazy.
Hwy88 Forever thank you, I have the same thing on my MK3 TTS, but when I put the brakes on and only when the brakes are hot! Exactly the same sound though
Mark Travers Hwy88 Forever I seem to having the same issue on my MKVII R after a clutch install. I checked the torque on the 13mm bolts and two were lose and almost seemed like they were going to strip until I got a click on my torque stick. Reduced it but still there.
Dustin Baarck maybe they still aren't tight enough? I didn't use a torque wrench on mine. I just tightened them as much as I could using a 3/8" ratchet. (Wasn't excessive but didn't go lightly either, just nice and tight). I also noticed that the bolts just kept spinning and spinning and FINALLY started getting tight towards the end.
Hwy88 Forever You should get under there and try tightening them to the proper torque. They are Torque to yield bolts, also known as stretch bolts and typically there is a torque spec as well as an additional quarter or half turn AFTER you have hit the spec. This is the point where the bolt stretches, and this help it from backing out. I used a fairly long torque wrench which puts a LOT of leverage on the bolt and it was a bit nerve wracking because it got to the point where I thought it was going to snap I had turned it so far and was putting a ton of pressure on it, but it didn’t. That’s just the way they are supposed to be tightened. Someone at the factory probably didn’t tighten them enough. FYI, If you take these bolts out you are supposed to replace them with new ones every time or risk them snapping off in the block 👎🏻 Also, you could put a little grease at the top of the bolt shaft where it meets the flange (NOT on the threads!) which might help reduce sounds caused by friction like snapping and cracking.
bjt42069 correct. I normally torque suspension components to spec but i didn’t have the specs and just used a 3/8” ratchet. I just tightened until it was snug then gave it another 1/8 of a turn. Nothing forceful enough to break the bolt but tight enough for it to stay put. And yes it drove me absolutely insane but it has been quiet and without any issues ever since.
bjt42069 I would suggest attempting to tighten each subframe bolt to see if any are loose. It shouldn’t take long. Mine was one of the 13mm bolts connected to the sway bar bracket but perhaps yours is another one.
@@hwy88forever38 hello there - are you sure 13mm? is it possible to put a picture of them? I have the same issue with my GTI and we could not find (in my service) out what is it. thank you
Marcelo Popper Costa I used a Go Pro hero 5 attached to a small plastic mount. I then duct taped the mount to the car. Pretty wonky but it worked for this purpose (low speed/short distance).
