When it comes to turbos, always wait for the engine oil to reach 180 F before driving hard. What I am saying is drive like your grandma until it is warm. Before shutting down your VW, let the car idle between 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on driving style and temperatures so you don't bake those bearings. Do these two things can prevent turbo failure over the life of the engine. Oh yes, use only the recommended synthetic oil and weight for your VW, also change your oil often. My recommendation is 6 months or 5 thousand miles.
@indahooddererste
@indahooddererste 4 года назад
afaik the mk7 has a coolant fluid moves through the turbo and a seperated pump that even activates with engine shutdown.
@opencarry3860
@opencarry3860 4 года назад
@@indahooddererste The bearings in the turbo use engine oil. If that turbo has been used hard and is very hot, you don't want to shut down the engine right away. That's a good way to cook those bearings. At a hundred thousand revolutions per minute, those bearings a very important to turbo life expectancy.
@bradfordamison7928
@bradfordamison7928 3 года назад
Yeah I let it idle so the hot oil can escape and cooler oil can make its way to the turbo. Also may help with radiator hose longevity

I have a 2017 base model Jetta w/MT. I always let the car warm up before I drive. Until I see my RPM's drop to about 8-900, I don't go anywhere. So far, no issues @ 61,500 miles and me being the second owner. I do change my oil every 10,000 miles max and use Castrol Edge Euro Car 5W-40. Also just replaced the fuel filter today and have change the spark plugs (at 40,000 miles) and air filters (both engine and cabin). Next will be brakes and possibly complete coolant flush.

My 2016 MK7 GTI sunroof squeaks mostly when the weather is very cold; it sounds like styrofoam rubbing. The dealership put some sort of film on it but it still does it. Not sure if its been said but a common issue with the early cars is water leaking into the spare tire well. Water from the hatch is supposed to leak down behind the light housing and through the bottom and out. A search will show a fix involving removing the bumper and more. I found an easier fix. Get under the car at the rear corner and you will see a small rubber plug. Remove this plug and the water wont leak into the rear hatch area anymore.

Turbo failure. C'mon! I own a $100,000 mile 2008 SAAB 9-5. Its Mitsubishi TD04 turbo lasts 200,000+ miles. Same with the timing chain. Since new, parts, labor, fluids and preventative maintenance has cost $2,700. The only VW product I would ever trust is an old Beetle or Combi. I would never trust any newer German car one day out of warranty. I've always wanted a GTI...but wouldn't want one now. Thanks for the informative video. Great work!

I have a UK spec 2016 GTi, bought used from VW. the only problem I’ve had is with the engine start button. Replaced it myself. The car runs flawlessly. I always buy cars at about a year old, so someone else has taken the depreciation hit, then sell at about five years old while it has some value, and (hopefully) no major problems. Sadly, no modern cars are worth keeping, they all become money pits.
@Hankblue
@Hankblue 2 года назад
You’re taking the bulk of the depreciation hit if you own in the first 5 years. It’s been shown buying in that period costs more in depreciation than the maintenance for an older model would. It does give you the convenience of warranty though

My 2021 brand new has 2 problems with 1 part - the sunroof shade. It opens a little while driving, and the plastic handle on it makes this extremely loud noise that sounds like a rock hitting the windshield. I duplicated the noise by squeezing it lol. The noise is rare, so it doesn't really bother me, but the shade opening can probably be solved by adding a piece of rubber or something with resistance.

@n.o.b.s.8458
@n.o.b.s.8458 5 месяцев назад
As far as I'm aware almost all VW's of this age range need careful attention paid to the water pump, They used a design with plastic fins and they were known to go bad on a number of models, including the 2.0 non turbo Jetta (I owned a 2012). The service is expensive as there's a lot of labor involved. It's also recommended to flush the coolant, replace the thermostat and replace the timing belt (I'm not 100% sure about this for all models, but I believe the GTI uses a chain and belt setup). If you're a backyard mechanic like me, parts aren't too bad but you'll need to really take your time and ensure everything is sorted. Otherwise, I'd factor in the cost of replacing these parts into the used car purchase price, around $1500 if memory serves. VW's can live long, healthy lives but you cannot ignore the maintenance items!

So aside from the injectors, fuel pumps, weak clutch, thermostat housing and sunroof problems the car is bulletproof 😉 Something else to consider is that the car is made of plastic. @niconiconnu 2 года назад
So I probably shouldn’t buy one then. Sucks because it’s the only car that tick all the boxes for me (affordable, pops and bangs when tuned, and perfect for everyday use, and it comes in auto).
@AK-ZL1
@AK-ZL1 2 года назад
@@niconiconnu It's not as bad as people say, it really has to do with not neglecting the maintenance. If you've seen a VW maintenance schedule, it's incredibly in detail as to when to service what, with several check ups on various components scheduled before the scheduled maintenance for that part itself. I consider a car unreliable when the manufacturer instructions on maintenance say one thing and then problems arise in spite of the manufacturers recommended maintenance. VW problems are for the most part very predictable, as the most common issues (DSG transmissions crapping out, electrical issues from weak battery, etc...) are all things that are scheduled for checkups and maintenance servicing that people try to skip on due to cost. VW's on paper are reliable in the literal sense, as if you follow the recommended maintenance, you won't run into many, if any issues, but reliability in the more colloquial sense refers to the "bulletproofness" of the car and it's ability to withstand neglect. Skip an oil change or recommended maintenance for a Toyota and your car will most likely be fine, as Toyota's in general are usually underpowered for it's durability and have fewer points of failure, but tend to be a more dull driving experience. VW on the other hand tend to have more power, more neat features and gadgets and a better driving experience for the same price, but neglect that same maintenance on a VW and you'll regret it very quickly. I saw a comment in a forum at one point and I think it explains the differences very well... Paraphrasing: "Toyota's are a commuters car and a VW is a drivers car." The average person isn't going to bother with following scheduled maintenance and will just service things at their own convenience or as problems arise... In a Toyota, that means bringing the car in when that weird noise you heard a few months back starts to get louder. In a VW, you're already screwed. To make a long story short, VW's do not take kindly to neglect nearly as well as Toyota or Honda's and are not as inherently reliable as a result. They are as reliable as you make them. If you love driving and take good care of your cars (follow all recommended maintenance, don't cut corners on cost, follow all the manufacturer recommendation for proper usage, use the recommended octane rating for gas, etc...), you'll probably get more satisfaction out of a VW than your typical Japanese economy car. If you are someone who just gets an oil change done when you flip to winters and call it a day, you should avoid VW or any European car brand for that matter.

Have had an 11yr old mark 7 for 8 months, beautiful car but has water leaks. So far windscreen replaced and sunroof leaking, booked in for water test next week then full valet 2 days later as passenger footwell front and back carpets soaked and mould in boot. Someone told me this car is known for water leaks. Is this right? Will get it fixed but is it worth keeping, will the problems reoccur?

@@samm9462 just to correct this real quick: The pre-facelift ones are not only direct injected, but multi point injected. This prevents them from getting carbon build up on the inlet valves (like on the MK5 and MK6 GTIs). Same for the facelift non-performance version (230 hp). Don't know if you got those in the US though. They seem to removed this feature with the facelift performance (245hp) and MK8 GTI though.
