MKBHD and the Space Black MacBook Pro 

There are a lot of improvements in terms editors, and programmers, etc. but 100% agree. Most people literally barely push their devices. I have a 2015 HP Spectre and that thing is awesome still looks new

Finally upgraded my Early-2015 Macbook Pro 13" Retina to a M2 Pro 14" Macbook Pro and it's been a gamechanger for my work, but I still use my other laptop so I don't have to disconnect things from the new laptop everytime I want to move around my house. The old one still works fine and the battery is surprisingly holding up strong. Upgrading on a sub 3-year frequency seems insane.

I still have a 2008 unibody MacBook running Ubuntu that comes in handy for web browsing, emails, and document/file handling. It's pretty much useless for anything else, but most people aren't doing much more than those things to begin with, so the 2-3 year upgrade people do, unless they're pro users, is insane to me too.

Pre-butterfly I think? Nice. The thing that makes it not a 10 year machine is lately Apple only allows upgrades for 6 years and updates for security only for two years. I just sold my 2019 MBP. Normally I keep them longer, but I’m over Intel and the heat and short battery life. The M3 Max and 64GB memory should last me the rest of the 2020s at least.

He wasn't in awe someone could hold a computer for more than two years, he was in awe marques could.

@@Boochao Right. The $$ made from his review video alone could likely buy M3 Maxes for his whole production team and then some. Sure the M1 Max is great, but 30-100% faster on a variety of tasks is not insignificant.

More crazy to me is that a new color is considered innovation and something to get excited about.

There are so many people on youtube saying that if you are serious about video production and "every second of export time counts", you would jump at every single performance leap. It is quite interesting to see the man himself not updating to the M3 Max, which is actually quite a significant improvement over M1 Max. I was even considering, I have the M1 Max too. Great laptop, battery is suffering a bit at around 80% capacity, but overall still very capable and does not feel old at all. I do software and a bit of video editing.

This is true. This is why I think the Midnight MacBook Air doesn't look very premium.

I have an M1 Macbook Air as well and I take it to work so..... I'm buying an M3 pro for my home use and photo editing, etc. I'll keep both.

Is it Xcode development for iOS? If so how is compiling. Is it 8gb ram?

@@viper627 I actually went with a Brand New M1 16” Max (32gb / 1tb) it was a $500 difference on B & H. Worth it to run two external monitors and a XDR screen.

Im in the same position, same time frame, but with an 8Gb model. Its still amazing. Only lag I had in a final cut project with like 10 layers and the occasional late game lag in Civ6. You would never tell its 8Gb.

@@galaxspace1 Yeah memory management is crazy. There was one time I saw 256kb swap and thought Apple wasn't lying about 8gb RAM being close to 16gb of regular PCs

Same here, that thing is a beast, doesn't slow down, doesn't heat, can handle almost everything. Zero reason to "upgrade".

That is when I usually end up buying a new laptop: when it is enough of an upgrade that it replaces both desktop and laptop for a while. Pretty cost efficient way to do it. By the time you need more power on desktop, you can upgrade that while keeping the same laptop.

Single core performance is of utmost importance for audio production, due to the nature of the workflow. Plugins need to be rendered live, in real time. The longer the plugin chain (many master bus chains run 10+ plugins in series), the more the CPU will be taxed, hence the importance of single core speed, because these chains can only run on a single core at once. That's how DAWs work. Multicore performance, on the other hand, is really important for parallel tasks (ie plugins inserted on different tracks instead of a long chain), and audio multicore performance mainly determine the number of tracks that can be played together, so don't get me wrong, it's also very important. You can quite easily bring an M1 Pro to its knees playing only two tracks on a Logic Pro Session if the master bus has enough plugins rendering in real time. Some plugins, especially those with internal oversampling for aliasing mitigation purposes, are huge CPU hogs. Hope I got this part clear. On top of that, the efficiency cores are notably worthless for audio production, because of their lower clock speeds, which act as a ceiling for real time operations. So, the more performance cores, the more tracks can be properly played at once. That's why you see dramatic increases in track count for every extra performance core added. And that's why the M2 Pro will always be a better choice for audio than the M3 Pro (the extra two performance cores make all the difference), even if the clock speed is slightly worse, because they're still faster than the M3's efficiency cores. I still rock an M1 Pro and it is sufficient for my needs, because the M1 Max didn't offer any advantages for audio production back then. Now it's a different story. When I do upgrade, and I believe I'll only do that by the time the M4 family comes out, I'll definitely pick the M4 Max, because the performance cores are all that matter for audio. The Ultras are cool, but I've gone mobile so the mac studio is not an option. For most user case scenarios presented (video editing, rendering, coding, gaming etc) the efficiency cores in the M3 family do a decent job, because these are not real time workflows. Video playback is a real time operation, but then the GPU takes most of the burden. Not for audio, unfortunately. It's the ONLY case scenario where the CPU is taxed in real time all the time, can't stutter nor miss a single sample, otherwise the playback crashes. So, it's all about clock speed. The more performance cores, the better for audio.

i did go from a mid 2015 macbook pro to a 16" m3 max, it was mind blowing at the difference for me.

Agreed. I'm a pro video editor and m1 max has been almost flawless for the last 1.5 years. This week was actually the 1st time since I bought it that I saw it struggling with a fairly heavy After Effects project. Only reason why I'm entertaining the idea of upgrading for M3, but even then I'm not sure if it's worth the investment and just wait for the m4

That's right, is not like in the 90s when a 3-year-old chip was a dinosaur, and also the RAM Memory was going up quite quickly. I had an AMD chip-based clone with 16 MB of RAM in 1995, went for an Intel Pentium II with 64 MB RAM in 1998, and finally my last desktop computer was an Intel Pentium III with 256 MB of RAM that I bought in 2001. That was a new Computer every 3 years! Since I got my first Macbook Pro, the cycle is at least a 5-6 year one. Still using my Macbook Pro 2019, so no plans to get into the M Chips until 2025.

I really believe that Apple's chip upgrade should be done every two years. I can't think of a single customer of the company who bought an M2 MBP last year considering upgrading to this year's model.

There's quite a performance jump between MBPMax's, and this 'space black' is bloody beautiful to those of us who like it dark@@Tkourtog

TBH, Most people don't need to upgrade for at least 5-8 years with an M1

I disagree the M1 Mac’s are still great for another 3 years. It would be a waste of money to get the M4

Those specs are for the M3 Max cpu. The M3 Pro cpu has only 6 performance cores versus 8 in the M1 Max. With 10+ cores available, the excess low-performance "efficiency" cores in the M3 Pro almost never make a practical difference.

Same, came from an intel 2019 16” and when the M1 came out I knew I wanted in. Took a bath on the 2019 and have never regretted it. Way fast enough for everything I do. Probably wait a few more generations before I consider upgrading.

What's crazy is I always assume it was my internet that was slow. Nope, it was my computer. Now with the M1 Max everything is lighting fast. haha@@jimtipton8888

It's way easier than most people make it out to be: If your current machine is causing you headaches because it cannot handle the stuff you throw at it, it's time to upgrade. As long as that does not happen you do not need a new computer.

Interesting question... I believe the upgrade today is ALSO about the aesthetic effect. Today, you see, there is a stupid need to have the latest model even for show purposes

If you're lucky like me to have inherited a fair wad - I no longer need to work and have terminal cancer so more than enough cash to splash - aesthetics rules. I love dark, which is why I got the Midnight M2. But the MBP screen aesthetic is to die for, so the 'black' MBP + superb screen makes this a must, even though performance wise, the Air did all I needed it to. Also, I could never get the screen black enough to make the notch invisible in the Air, but on the MBP, die to the deep black screen, I can

I think once you begin to notice the performance dip. Noticable load times, all of a sudden crashes, things coming a part.
