1980 was the best NLCS ever. Four of the five games went extra innings. This is really close, however, which is amazing considering the series didn't go the distance. I will say this - with Mike Scott looming in Game 7, this was the biggest "must win Game 6 (for a team up 3-2)" in MLB history.

it's not on this video- but i remember watching it live- the 6th inning strikeout of Gary Carter. a fast ball straight down the middle- the kind Carter would normally knocked out of the park- put him out. MrAitraining, we at www.imasportsphile.com responsible for posting this video along with 2900 other vintage videos like it on our site....including this entire NLCS between the Mets vs Astros.....are in agreement with your assessment in this comment....as we believe that this NLCS features the two best pitching staff to ever grace an NLCS series....as the Mets staff of Gooden, Darling, Ojeda, Fernandez and Orosco were dang near as good as the Astros with Scott, Ryan, Knepper, Deshaises and Smith.
@johnnyg2049

No question the Astros would've won Game 7. I'm thinking it would've been a 5-2, 5-1 game or something like that. Scott probably would've went at least 8 while it would've been all hands on deck for the Mets with the exception of Gooden who did start Game 1 of the WS.
@markuyehara7880

@@markuyehara7880 agree. Red sox weren't beating them. Mets had a better lineup than boston and better relievers and NY just squeaked by. To the people saying that Mike Scott scuffed the baseball... If you knew anything about how a "Split-Finger Fastball" is thrown and the physics behind it, you would be completely embarrassed by your phony claims. Here's the short version since you got my attention with your uneducated comments. The "Split-Finger Fastball" is thrown just like a regular "Fastball" but because of the split grip shown in this video, the ball slips out of the hand between the fingers when thrown which reduces some of the rotation of the ball as it travels to home plate. This reduced rotation creates sort of a tumbling action which causes the ball to drop right before it gets to the batter. Along with that, Mike Scott threw this pitch similar to a "2-Seam Fastball" which also creates some of the arm-side break you see here. Finally, you can actually take your fat ass outside and throw this pitch yourself and it will do the same shit. If it doesn't, then your doing it wrong.

Knowing the balls on that team, I bet they woulda walked of the field and refused to play if Scott wasn’t taken care of…he was clearly cheating (search it…so many teams blatantly called him out). There’s an ‘87 game against SF where u can see him panic and hide something in his jersey

@@Chize41 I've seen it & he admits it saying if I cheated it will be in my book asked when the books coming out he says " never!" I watched the Mets in the 30 for 30 show the same scuffed balls after the game in 30+ years later. Doc Gooden pitched against him in the nlcs in 86 & said the balls were scuffed he could feel it but he had no idea how he as a batter in the same game how the same balls were " life waffle balls " or exploding in 2 ways. He was a typical Medicore pitcher than he hooked up w/ legendary split seemer fast ball hitting coach who taught him how to hold the ball than he added illegal sandpaper & or other substances to the ball & he was able to throw it fast & had the perfect long fingers for it. That's why he was unhittable & unbeatable in 86 & into 87 & got caught & his decline came harder than b4 he cheated. Some power hitters on the Mets like straw felt it also started getting into their heads b/c they became so focused on the cheating as well they were swinging at crazy pitches way outside the strike zone.

I have been a fan for life too....and my Bone Daddy the original Sportsphile has been an Astros fan since the Colt 45 days....for he was at the 3 games that were played at Shea....as he was on the mezzanine level right behind the Mets dougout....wearing his DON{T METS WITH TEXAS tshirt harrassing the Mets so badly....that the NYC fans threatened to either piss on him or throw him off the mezzanine....and then he had to eat crow.

we at Ima Sportsphile think you are right on several points....they were a bunch of cokeheads and alcoholics....and they were mighty gritty....almost on the level of the 1969 Mets.....and Hernandez was the engine on that team....but in our opinion, Carter played more years, had more HRs and had more RBIs....while having a career batting average just .30 below Hernandez deserve at .262 to .292....so, if you don´t think Carter should be in the Hall....then Hernandez definitely should not.

The Angels should have been in the World Series that year.

The Angels matched up with the Mets even worse than the Sox did. Would have been over in five games.

Christ, what a terrible zone from Doug Harvey. Of course, I understand that it's called a little differently today, but that zone was terrible even for 1986.
